Implementatin This plicy and related plicies and prcedures at the service will be fllwed by nminated supervisrs and educatrs f, and vlunteers at, the service in the event that a child - (a) is injured; r (b) becmes ill; r (c) suffers a trauma. The apprved prvider f the service will ensure that a parent f a child is ntified as sn as practicably pssible and withut undue delay. Parents will be ntified n later than 24 hurs f the injury, illness r trauma. An Incident, Injury, Trauma and Illness Recrd will be cmpleted withut delay. First aid kits will be easily recgnised and readily available where children are present at the service and during excursins. They will be suitably equipped having regard t the hazards at the service, past and ptential injuries and size and lcatin f the service. We will ensure first aid, anaphylaxis management training and asthma management training is current and updated at least every 3 years, and that all cmpnents f the first aid certificate are current if sme require an earlier revisin. We will file these qualificatins and expiry dates where they can be easily accessed by all educatrs and staff. First aid qualified educatrs will be present at all times n the rster and in the service. They will never exceed their qualificatins and cmpetence when administering first aid. During inductin training fr new educatrs and staff we will: advise which educatrs have first aid qualificatins, and asthma and anaphylaxis management training and the lcatin f the first aid kit btain infrmatin abut any first aid needs the educatr may have that culd require specific treatment in a medical emergency. This infrmatin will nly be prvided t first aid qualified educatrs with the emplyee s cnsent. We will review ur first aid respnse plan, the lcatin f the first aid kit and wh ur first aid trained educatrs are at least annually r when there are any changes. Administratin f First Aid If there is an accident, illness r injury requiring first aid, the fllwing respnse prcedure will be implemented: 2

Educatr r staff member ntifies nminated supervisr and a first aid qualified educatr f the incident, illness r injury Nminated supervisr r first aid qualified educatr reviews child s medical infrmatin including any medical infrmatin disclsed n the child s enrlment frm, medical management plan r medical risk minimisatin plan befre the first aid qualified educatr attends t the injured r ill child r adult. If the illness r incident invlves asthma r anaphylaxis, an educatr with apprved asthma r anaphylaxis training will attend t the child r adult (cmmencing 1 January 2013 fr services that immediately prir t 1 January 2012 did nt require educatrs t have asthma management training r anaphylaxis management training). Nminated supervisr and educatrs supervise and care fr children in the vicinity f the incident, illness r injury If required, first aid qualified educatr r nminated supervisr ntifies and crdinates ambulance If required, first aid qualified educatr r nminated supervisr ntifies parent r authrised nminee that child requires medical attentin frm a medical practitiner If required, educatr r nminated supervisr cntacts parent r authrised nminee t cllect child frm service Nminated supervisr ensures Incident, Injury, Trauma and Illness Recrd is cmpleted in full and withut delay and parent r authrised nminee is ntified as sn as pssible and within 24 hurs f the injury, illness r trauma. First Aid Kit Guidelines Any First Aid kit at the service must - Nt be lcked. Nt cntain paracetaml. Be apprpriate fr the number f emplyees and children and adequate fr the immediate treatment f injuries at the service. Be in a place that takes an emplyee n lnger than tw minutes t reach, including time required t access secure areas. Be cnstructed f resistant material, be dustprf and f sufficient size t adequately stre the required cntents Be capable f being sealed and preferably be fitted with a carrying handle as well as have internal cmpartments. Cntain a list f the cntents f the kit. Be regularly checked using the First Aid Kit Checklist t ensure the cntents are as listed and have nt deterirated r expired. 3

Display emergency telephne numbers Cnsideratin shuld be given t preventative measures such as sunscreen prtectin and prtable water if wrking utdrs. First Aid kits must be taken n excursins and be attended by First Aid qualified educatrs. Be maintained in prper cnditin and the cntents replenished as necessary. This will ccur after each use r if unused, at least annually. They will als cnsider whether the first aid kits and mdules suit the service s hazards and the injuries that have ccurred. If the kit requires additinal resurces, these individuals will advise and fllw up with the nminated supervisr. We will display a well recgnised, standardised first aid sign t assist in easily lcating first aid kits. Signage will cmply with AS 1319:1994 Safety Signs fr the Occupatinal Envirnment. 4

First Aid Kit Checklist Our service will determine the apprpriate quantity after cnsidering the number f children in care. Our educatrs will als ensure they are equipped with the apprpriate resurces t deal with a child at risk f anaphylaxis and ther medical cnditins. Educatrs may wish t prvide additinal items r mdules, fr example burns mdules and eye wund mdules. Ntificatin f serius incidents and cmplaints The Apprved Prvider will ntify the regulatry authrity within 24 hurs f any serius incident at ur service (s. 174). This includes any serius injury r trauma t, r illness f a child which a reasnable persn wuld cnsider required urgent medical attentin frm a medical practitiner r fr which the child attended, r ught reasnably t have attended, a hspital. Serius injuries, traumas and illnesses include: head injuries brken limbs burns remval f fingers meningcccal infectin anaphylactic reactin requiring urgent medical attentin witnessing vilence r a frightening event epileptic seizures brnchilitis whping cugh measles diarrhea requiring urgent medical attentin asthma requiring urgent medical attentin sexual assault A serius incident als includes: The death f a child at the service r fllwing an incident at the Service An incident at the service where the emergency services attended r ught reasnably t have attended A child is missing A child has been taken frm the service withut the authrisatins required under the regulatins A child is mistakenly lcked in r ut f the service. If ur service nly becmes aware that the incident was serius afterwards, we will ntify the regulatry authrity within 24 hurs f becming aware that the incident was serius. We will ntify the regulatr using frm SI01 Ntificatin f Serius Incident http://files.acecqa.gv.au/files/2014%20applicatin%20fms/service%20apprval/ SI01_NtificatinOfSeriusIncident_v11.pdf (retrieved 15th May 2015 ACEQUA website) The Apprved Prvider will als ntify the regulatry authrity in writing: within 24 hurs f any cmplaints alleging that the safety, health r wellbeing f a child is being cmprmised at the service r within 7 days f any circumstances arising at the Service that pse a risk t the health, safety and wellbeing f a child. within 24 hurs f the attendance f any children being educated and care fr in an emergency. This includes where the child needs prtectin under a child 7

prtectin rder r the parent f the child needs urgent health care. The emergency care can be fr n mre than tw cnsecutive days the service perates. We will advise the regulatry authrity what the emergency is and make a statement that the Apprved Prvider has taken int accunt the safety, health and wellbeing f all the children attending the service befre deciding t accept the additinal child/children. 8

Wrk Health and Safety (OHS) requirements Serius injury r illness is a ntifiable incident under the wrk, health and safety legislatin. Serius injury r illness means a persn requires: immediate treatment as an in-patient in a hspital, r immediate treatment fr: the amputatin f any part f the bdy a serius head injury a serius eye injury a serius burn the separatin f skin frm an underlying tissue (such as deglving r scalping) a spinal injury the lss f a bdily functin serius laceratins r medical treatment within 48 hurs f expsure t a substance. A serius illness includes any infectin t which the carrying ut f wrk is a significant cntributing factr, fr example an infectin that can be linked t prviding treatment t a persn r cming int cntact with human bld r bdy substances. A dangerus incident is als ntifiable under the legislatin. Dangerus incidents include: an uncntrlled escape, spillage r leakage f a substance an uncntrlled implsin, explsin r fire an uncntrlled escape f gas r steam an uncntrlled escape f a pressurised substance electric shck the fall r release frm a height f any plant, substance r thing the cllapse, verturning, failure r malfunctin f, r damage t, any plant that is required t be authrised fr use in accrdance with the regulatins the cllapse r partial cllapse f a structure the cllapse r failure f an excavatin r f any shring supprting an excavatin the inrush f water, mud r gas in wrkings, in an undergrund excavatin r tunnel The apprved prvider r nminated supervisr must ntify WrkCver by telephne r in writing (including by facsimile r email) as sn as pssible after the injury, illness r incident. Recrds f the incident must be kept fr at least 5 years frm the date that the incident is ntified. The apprved prvider/nminated supervisr must ensure the site where the incident ccurred is left undisturbed as much as pssible until an inspectr arrives r as directed by WrkCver. 9
