The Ceter s educatio programs are supported by diverse fudig streams from public ad private sources. Graduate degree scholarships ad certificate programs prepare studets ad professioals to address the challeges ad complexities of the world s most dyamic regio. Udergraduate degree scholarships build ad stregthe the base of future leaders i East Timor ad the South Pacific. Last year, more tha 360 studets from 43 coutries across the Asia Pacific regio ad U.S., as well as Caada, Lati America ad the Middle East, took part i EWC educatio programs. Professioal developmet semiars, workshops, ad field studies for K-12 teachers ad higher educatio faculty broade the capacity of idividuals ad istitutios to prepare studets to live i a iterdepedet world where the Asia Pacific regio plays a icreasigly importat role. A emergig iteratioal forum o educatio cosiders the implicatios of globalizatio, iterdepedecy ad equity o educatioal systems i the Asia Pacific regio ad the U.S. DEGREE PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS Approximately 75 percet of the Ceter s studets i 2004 were pursuig degree study, most for master s or doctoral degrees. About 40 percet of that umber were fuded through the Ceter s cogressioally appropriated scholarships. From 30 to 40 appropriated scholarships are awarded each year o a highly competitive basis, with two thirds of the recipiets comig from the Asia Pacific regio ad oe-third from the Uited States. Sixty-five percet of degree studets at the Ceter are ow supported through private foudatios, competitive federal grats, alumi cotributios, ad self-fudig, a figure that has rise steadily sice 2001. INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM Fuded by the Ford Foudatio, the Iteratioal Fellowships Program (IFP) supports graduate study for studets draw from outside the atioal elites i their home coutries. The Ceter s 47 IFP studets make up the secod largest group of studets i the EWC Educatio Program, followig those o appropriated scholarships (see page 8). The Educatio Program embodies the East-West Ceter missio of buildig a Asia Pacific commuity i partership with the Uited States. UNITED STATES-EAST TIMOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The U.S.-East Timor Scholarship Program (USET) supports the higher educatio of academically taleted East Timorese who are expected to assume leadership roles i East Timor ad cotribute to their coutry s political, ecoomic ad social developmet. Sice 1999 the East-West Ceter has received six grats from the Bureau of Educatioal ad Cultural Affairs i support of a total of 24 studets. The program provides opportuities to obtai first-had kowledge of America istitutios, values, orms, customs ad diversity. Last year, Jose Turquel de Jesus was elected vice presidet of the EWC Participat Associatio ad played a leadig role i orgaizig the EWC Tsuami Relief Fudraiser. UNITED STATES-SOUTH PACIFIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The U.S.-South Pacific Scholarship Program (USSP) esures that academically taleted Pacific Isladers have a opportuity to pursue higher educatio i the Uited States. Idividuals seekig a bachelor s or master s degree from the South Pacific Islad atios of the Cook Islads, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Papua New Guiea, Solomo Islads, Samoa, Toga, Tuvalu, ad Vauatu are eligible for the competitive, merit-based scholarship awards for periods ragig from 24 to 48 moths. Sice 1994, 50 studets have participated i the program. Udergraduate scholarship recipiets may pursue studies at istitutios i the cotietal Uited States through the Natioal Studet Exchage (NSE) program. Last year, two studets were fiishig their studies at CUNY Huter College i New York City. Durig the summer moths, studet educatioal programs have icluded iterships i Washigto, D.C. (with federal agecies, iteratioal NGOs, ad private sector compaies), erichmet activities i New York City, ad commuity service projects i their home coutries. Sice its establishmet i 2002, with geerous fudig from the Freema Foudatio, the program has graduated 159 fellows from 34 coutries ad created a iteratioal etwork of leaders committed to the future prosperity of the Asia Pacific regio. I August 2004, 44 ew fellows joied the APLP as part of its fourth cohort. The APLP equips participats to become agets of chage i the Asia Pacific regio by providig high-quality program cotet with a emphasis o applied experietial learig. The Regioal Core Issues Semiar, taught by EWC research staff, ad the Leadership Semiar, are tightly itegrated with Field Studies. I the fall of 2004, the class held a retreat o the eighbor islad of Molokai, where participats evisioed their persoal ad collective goals durig the program, ad explored idigeous cultural models of leadership i Hawai i. I November, the APLP visited Washigto, D.C., where the fellows examied U.S. policy ad the ature Degree fellow Zaria Chekirbaeva with APLP participats Christel Sam ad Ezra O. Bruce Reyolds. of political leadership, power ad ethics. I Jauary, the group traveled to Thailad ad Laos to ivestigate policy i actio, meet idigeous leaders ad discuss local policy iitiatives. I Bagkok, APLP fellows voluteered with the Thai Red Cross loadig cargo, sortig clothig ad givig blood to help address the shortage of life-savig medical supplies i the aftermath of the Idia Ocea tsuami. As part of the commitmet to build a alumi etwork of excellece, the iaugural APLP reuio was held o Molokai i Jue 2004 with APLP alumi returig to the East-West Ceter from the Asia Pacific regio ad the Uited States. I 2004 the program offered professioal developmet opportuities to 162 educators from the Uited States ad Idoesia, Thailad ad Chia. Educators explored istructioal models ad learig strategies to promote diversity ad collaborative learig. With geerous support from the Freema Foudatio, AsiaPacificEd offered its sigature best practice summer istitute ad travel semiar. The istitute exposed participats to research-prove teachig strategies for improvig studet achievemet while icorporatig quality Southeast Asia materials ad appropriate techologies. The travel semiar to Vietam ad Thailad offered cross-cultural experieces ad perspectives geared toward trasformig the professioals approach to teachig. Oe of the first of 17 programs i the U.S. to receive the Natioal Edowmet for the Humaities Ladmarks i America History Grat, AsiaPacificEd also collaborated with the USS Arizoa Memorial to develop two week-log workshops explorig the livig history of Pearl Harbor i the cotext of U.S.- Japa relatios. The workshops provided 100 history teachers with experiece i iterpretig the Arizoa Memorial ad usig archival ad other primary source materials. Established i 1990, ASDP is a joit program of the Uiversity of Hawai i ad the East-West Ceter. Followig plaig meetigs i Japa ad Hog Kog, leadig thikers i the field of educatio atteded a two-week workshop at the East-West Ceter to develop the parameters of the project. Mauscripts have bee edited for a book tetatively titled: Chagig Educatio i a World of Complex Iterdepedece: Educatio 2020. Plaig for the desig of a leadership-traiig istitute was also udertake. The istitute will ecourage the developmet of educatio paradigms that address the eeds of a icreasigly iterdepedet world while supportig sustaiability, equity ad effective iteractio.
