Newsletter of IEEE Kolkata Section June - January, 2015 From the Chair Dear Members, I am happy to address you again after the AGM 2014 held on January 15 at Calcutta Club. This issue covers the activity report for July 2014- January 15, 2015. I feel proud and honoured to share the news of our members' accomplishments this year: Prof. Amit Konar has been elected Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti has been elected Chair-Elect 2015 of IEEE India Council, Prof. Chandan Kumar Sarkar has been invited to serve as a Vice-Chair of the EDS Region 10 SRC for 2015-2016, and Prof. Subir Kumar Sarkar has been elected Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Electron Device Society of Region 10 (Asia and Pacific). Let's convey our heartiest congratulations to all of them. I may also add a news of Section's accomplishment. The AP/MTT Chapter of our Section has won the 'Best Chapter Award' of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society this year and on behalf of this Chapter, I had the honor to receive the 'Best Chapter Plaque' in the award banquet held on July 9, 2014 at Memphis, Tennessee. I represented Kolkata Section in the IEEE Sections Congress held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, at the Rai Convention Center, from 22 to 24 August 2014. Dr. Gargi Keeni of our section had also attended the same. Sections Congress is a triennial gathering of IEEE grassroots leadership to establish worldwide network and develop recommendations to guide the future of IEEE. I personally had interacted with several leaders from different parts of the globe and tried to adopt new ideas to advance our own activities. During November 7-8, 2014 we had organized th the 4 edition of CALCON, a triennial National Conference of our Section. CALCON 2014, attended by over 220 participants, was a

huge success. A number of scientists of international repute attended and offered technical talks and tutorials. A detailed report has been presented in a dedicated column 'CALCON 2014'. We could organize few lecture meetings on technical and industry related topics and a separate account is provided in this issue under the heading of 'Lecture Meetings'. We have tried to give special attention to Student Branches and their activities and have reached several Branches on several occasions. In CALCON 2014, we have introduced provision of interactive sessions between the representatives of IEEE Student Branches and the section leaders to address their issues. Based on their recommendations, the section is going to introduce yearly project competition at Bachelor and Master levels for IEEE Student members and in each category, quite a good number of prizes will be awarded to encourage and financially support the successful students. I had attended a few Conferences technically coth sponsored by us, namely 4 International Conference on Emerging Applications of Information Technology (EAIT 2014) held in Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata during th Dec 19-21, 2014; 13 International Conference on Information Technology (ICIT 2014), held in Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, during December 22-24, 2014;and 1st Conference on Power, Dielectric and Energy Management (ICPDEN 2015)., held in NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh during January 10-11, 2015. I do welcome new Executive Committee for 2015 under the leadership of Prof. Chandan Kumar Sarkar, Chair 2015. It is my time to take your leave. I enjoyed my journey with you for last couple of years. Thank you so much for giving me such a wonderful opportunity and also bearing with me all the way. Namaskar!

IEEE Kolkata Section has organized/ sponsored several programmes during June to December 2014. We tried to reach the members and students who are located far away from Kolkata. Prof. Debatosh Guha gave a lecture at KIT Bhubaneswar Student Branch. We will try to reach out more in the future. Kolkata Section organized CALCON2014 in November 2014, which was a great success. There were 220 participants from all over India. Ten new Student Branches were formed this year, and there were a large number of student participants from in and around Kolkata in CALCON2014. I thank all our student members to make CALCON2014 such a success. I would request all of you to encourage young professionals and students to join IEEE and I would appeal to all my fellow members to continue their memberships in the years to come and to come forward and volunteer to lead Kolkata Section. I would request all of you to give your suggestions for improving the Kolkata Section Newsletter. Dr. Barun Kr. De, 'Strategy for Sustainable Commercialization of Renewable Energy'. The programme was well attended. There were 34 faculty members and students. th 36 AGM of IEEE Kolkata Section at Calcutta Club th on 15 January 2015 th 36 AGM of IEEE Kolkata Section was held at th Calcutta Club on 15 January 2015. There were 173 participants in the AGM. Like previous years, Kolkata Section felicitates a few of its members during the AGM. Prof. Amit Konar, Professor, Department of Electrical and Telecommunication Engg., Jadavpur University, for becoming a Fellow of INAE. Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, of Electrical Engineering Dept of Jadavpur University, immediate past chair of the Section, in recognition of the service rendered by him towards the overall development of the Section in last few years. 2015 Award and Felicitation at AGM ection has felicitated Prof. Amit Konar, a distinguished member of the section on his recent accomplishment as a newly elected Fellow of Indian National SAcademy of Engineering 2014. Prof Amit Konar is a Professor in the department of Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering, Jadavpur University and Joint Coordinator, Center for Cognitive Science, Jadavpur University. Dr. Konar's research areas include the computational intelligence algorithms and their applications to the entire domain of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, immediate past chair of the Section, has been honoured with a Special IEEE Recognition Plaque issued by IEEE Head Quarter on recommendation of the Section Executive Committee for 2014. This is as a token of section's appreciation to his outstanding services to the overall advances in Section's growth and activities. Prof. Chakravorti has served the section in different capacities in the past. He is a Professor of Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University. Prof. Chakravorti is a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE) and also a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc). He is accomplished by IEEE as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics & Electrical Insulation and also as a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Power and Energy Society. The Section has presented Outstanding Volunteer Award 2015 to Mr. Sayan Chatterjee for his outstanding services to IEEE activities. He is an Asst. Professor of ETCE Department of Jadavpur University and a promising researcher in the field of antenna engineering.

2014 Report IEEE CALCON CALCON 2014, a triennial national conference of the IEEE Kolkata Section was organized with great enthusiasm at Hotel Park Prime Kolkata during November 7-8. The technical tracks were comprised of paper presentations, student paper contest, invited lectures and plenary lectures. The keynote address was delivered by Peter Russer, University of Munich, Germany with the title Nanotechnology as a key enabling technology. The technical tracks were divided into three: Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering and Computer Sc. & Engineering. A total of XX (number to be confirmed by Poulomi/ Moumita) contributory papers were presented. Apart from these, 10 invited lectures were delivered by leading academicians from R&D organizations and academia in India. Amongst them was Sankar Pal, CA Murthy and Utpal Garain from ISI Kolkata, S.N. Singh from IIT Kanpur, M. Ramamoorty from VNR VJIET Hyderabad, M. Chandorkar from IIT Bombay, Ranjan K. Mallik, from IIT Delhi, Sunanda Dhar from CU, Chimoy Saha from IIST, Trivandrum, Pabitra Mitra from IIT Kharagpur. CALCON2014 was attended by more than 240 participants; a large section was UG students and young researchers. The programme was also graced by well-known researchers like PK Basu (Ex-RPE, CU), Bhaskar Gupta (ETC JU), Animesh Maitra (Ex-RPE, CU) who chaired different technical sessions. Prof Sankar Pal shared his valuable feedbacks on research culture and presentation skills to the young audience. A student branch meeting was conducted and coordinated by Debangshu Dey. The conference dinner was attended by senior members of IEEE like Prof D.K. Basu, Mr S. Dasgupta (pls check the name), founder member of Kolkata Section. A lot of interaction took place between the young researchers who got valuable suggestions from leading academicians.

2014 Report IEEE CALCON

October 29, 2014 Dr. Christophe Fumeaux Dielectric Resonator Antennas- from microwaves to optical frequencies Organized by: IEEE Kolkata Section IEEE Lecture Meeting Dr. Fumeaux with Prof. Guha and students at the laboratory Dr. Christophe Fumeaux from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Adelaide, Australia delivered an inspiring lecture on DRAs at the A. N. Daw conference hall, Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics. Students and professors from reputed Universities and colleges (University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University and IIEST Shibpur) attended the hour long seminar. Prof. Debatosh Guha, Chairman of IEEE Kolkata Section was present at the meeting and addressed the audience introducing Prof. Fumeaux to the participants. Dr. Fumeaux also visited the Microwave Laboratory at the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics. Dr. Nemai C. Karmakar University-Industry Research Collaboration: Transforming Inventions into Innovations for Economic Benefits of Australia Organized by: IEEE Kolkata Section IEEE Lecture Meeting Dr. Karmakar interacting with the audience An interesting talk was on the synergy of university and industry philosophy was delivered by Dr. N.C. Karmakar from Monash University, Australia, at the A.N. Daw auditorium of the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, University of Calcutta. The talk was mostly on interactive mode with discussion on pedagogy, gathering and sharing of new knowledge and industry focuses on returns of investment. The speaker also highlighted the mechanisms of research collaborations between industries and universities for the greater benefits of the national economy. There were in total 23 participants. The talk was very much appreciated by the audience and Gargi Keeni from IEEE Computer Society offered thanks to the speaker and suggested more such talks to be arranged by the section.

November 10, 2014 Prof. Peter Russer Ferdinand Braun- a Forgotten Hero of Electronic Engineering Organized by: IEEE Kolkata Section IEEE Lecture Meeting Prof. Russer addressing the audience About 75 students and professors from reputed Universities, colleges and high school attended the hour long lecture meet at the Meghnad Saha Auditorium, Science College Rajabazar Campus of Calcutta University. Prof. Russer from the Technische Universität München, Germany, enlightened the participants with the history of science, detailing the immense contribution of the 1909 noble laureate scientist Ferdinand Braun to electronics and wireless technologies. March 31, 2014 Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti Educational lecture on Condition Monitoring of Oil-Paper Insulation of Transformers Organized by: IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter in collaboration with NIT Rourkela DEIS Kolkata Chapter The educational activity was organized by DEIS Kolkata Chapter at NIT Rourkela. The lecture was delivered on Condition Monitoring of Oil- Paper Insulation of Transformers by Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti. There were 29 participants in this lecture meeting out of which 5 were IEEE members. Interested students took part in this lecture. The speaker delivering his talk Recent trends in Electrical Engineering April 04, 2014 Organized by: IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter in collaboration with Murshidabad College of Engineering and Technology A one day seminar was organized by DEIS Kolkata Chapter at Murshidabad College of Engineering and Technology, Berhampore, Murshidabad. There were three different speakers who delivered lectures on separate topics. (1) Smart Grid by Dr. J.N. Bera, Department of Applied Physics, University of Calcutta. (2) Control System Engineering by Dr. K. Das Sharma, University of Calcutta. (3) Energy Efficient Buildings by Prof. S. Neogi, School of Energy Studies, Jadavpur University. There were 93 participants in this lecture meeting out of which 5 were IEEE members. A large number of interested students took part in this lecture.

April 05, 2014 Recent trends in Electrical Engineering Organized by: IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter in collaboration with Murshidabad College of Engineering and Technology A one day seminar was organized by DEIS Kolkata Chapter at Murshidabad College of Engineering and Technology, Berhampore, Murshidabad. There were three different speakers who delivered lectures on separate topics. (1) High Voltage Transmission Line and Underground Cable by Prof. S. Chakravorti, Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University. (2) Smart phones as new platform for condition/health monitoring by Dr. D. Dey, Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University. (3) Capacitive sensor and signal conditioning by Prof. S. Munshi, Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University. There were 110 participants in this lecture meeting out of which 8 were IEEE members. A large number of interested students took part in this lecture. DEIS Kolkata Chapter Students Activity on Circuistic of Convolution 2014 Organized by: Students, Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University in collaboration with IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter February 15, 2014 The students participating in making circuits The student activity, organized by the Students of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, in collaboration with DEIS Kolkata Chapter, was a competition where students from various institutions in groups took part in making circuit solutions related to practical engineering problems. Design competition part lasted for six hours. The Jury comprised of eminent academicians and technologists to judge the award winners of the competition. Accordingly prizes and certificates were given to the participants holding the first, second and the third positions. There were in total 101 participants in this event, of which there were 7 IEEE members. Prize distribution by the Chapter Chairman

Prof. Bandopadhyay delivered his talk on Continuous Integral Sliding Mode Control: A Second Order Sliding Mode approach. There were in total 101 participants in this event, of which there were 7 IEEE members. November 27, 2014 Workshop on Advanced Technique in Making Printed Circuit Boards using Photoresists Organized by: IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter in collaboration with Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University DEIS Kolkata Chapter Dr. Chatterjee conducting the session The workshop organized by DEIS Kolkata Chapter was conducted for the post-graduate students of Electrical Engineering by Dr. Biswendu Chatterjee. There were 16 post graduate students in this workshop out of which 3 were IEEE members. The workshop was of practical benefit to the students. Students having hands-on experience

July 11, 2014 st 1 International Conference on Microelectronics, Circuits and Systems Organized by: IASTM,IETE and Purushottam Institute of Engineering and Technology, Odisha and technical co-sponsored by IEEE Electron Device Society The key note s p e e c h w a s delivered by Dr. Soumya Pandit, C h a i r, E D S Calcutta Chapter in the domain of Nano-scale Challenges of CMOS Circuits. He elaborated the various ultra deepsubmicron issues of MOS transistors and the dominant effects of these on the circuit performances. At the opening session, Shri R.N.Lahiri of IETE Kolkata mentioned about the current status of CMOS transistors and opto electronic devices for various applications including logic, memory and power applications. Active discussions took place through many questions and comments. About 100 Professors, Scientists and professionals in the field of electronics attended the conference. About 180 papers were received, 70 of them accepted for presentations, 65 papers were registered and 60 presented. The overwhelming response received from local and international authors is really significant. Delegates at the Seminar Hall of Science City. The Distinguished Lecturers who delivered talks in the MQ were Dr. Samar Saha, President (Elect) and Senior Member, IEEE EDS, Dr. Ravi Todi, Treasurer and Fellow, IEEE EDS, Prof. Chandan Kumar Sarkar, Professor of ETCE department, Jadavpur University and Senior Member of IEEE and Prof. Gananath Dash, Professor of Physics department, Sambalpur University. Dr. Ravi Todi in his talk highlighted on the challenges faced by Semiconductor Industries and their solutions. Prof. Dash spoke on the recent development of Graphene and its applications on Transistor design for digital and analog applications. On 4th December, Prof. C.K.Sarkar delivered his lecture on Advanced MOS transistors; Dr. Samar K. Saha spoke on MOS Transistor for Low Power Applications. The Mini Colloquium also consisted of a series of Invited Talks by renowned academicians like Dr. Soumya Pandit, Chairman, IEEE EDS Kolkata Chapter, Dr. N Mohankumar, Professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering department, SKP Engineering College, Tamil Nadu and Dr. S.K.Mondal, Professor of KIIT University. Dr. Mohankumar and Dr. Pandit delivered their talks on HEMT devices and modeling and Mobile SoC Design respectively. Dr. S.K.Mondal spoke on Inductor Design for RFIC applications. The MQ also invited poster presentations from students and research scholars in the domain of the MQ coverage. The MQ was attended by many Senior faculty members from various leading Engineering colleges in India. The MQ was also attended by over 100 research students from KIIT and other parts of India. The audience attendance were 55, comprising of Prof. Chandan K. Sarkar (Professor, J a d a v p u r U n i v e r s i t y a n d Distinguished Lecturer of EDS), Prof. Iti Saha Mishra (HOD,ETCE Department, Jadavpur University), Prof. Soumya Pandit (Chairperson, EDS Kolkata), Prof. Atanu Kundu (Vice Chairperson, EDS Kolkata), Under Graduate and Post Graduate students, PhD students and Senior faculty members from Jadavpur University, IIT Kharagpur, Calcutta University, KIIT University, Heritage Institute of Technology, Kalyani Govt. Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) provides the rainfall rate and total rainfall associated to a cloud, intensity of cyclones, speed of winds, direction and speed of movement of the thunderstorms, tornadoes and cyclone.dwr estimates the wind speed accompanied with a cyclone along with expected storm surge height and prediction of landfall place and landfall time of a cyclone with a very high accuracy. Severe weather events like Low Pressure System, Deep Depression, Tropical Cyclone (SIDR, AILA, and Phailin), Squall Line formation can be tracked and predicted by this weather radar. December 2, 2014 Prof. Gopa Dutta Impact of cyclone Nilam on tropical lower atmospheric dynamics Organized by: IEEE GRSS Kolkata Section GRSS Kolkata Chapter The topic of the discussion was Impact of cyclone Nilam on tropical lower atmospheric dynamics. Atmospheric waves of different temporal and spatial scales play a major role in the dynamics of the atmosphere. Turbulence and wave activities can be studied from measurements of winds and temperature. The discussions of environment included atmosphere, land, forest and water which included identifying and monitoring the scientific and socio-economic issues. The North-Eastern India has distinct environmental issues that required special attention while planning remote sensing program. Remote sensing now constitutes a significant component of current Indian Space program and, in that context the present workshop played an important role by focusing the following topics for understanding and managing the earth-environment issues and standards. 2014 ANNUAL REPORT Mr. D. Biswas, a renowned expert in Android, is being felicitated by Prof. S.K.Sanyal, Chairman, CAS Chapter III. COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES: The CAS Chapter extended collaborative hands to ComSoc Chapter in organizing the following programs as detailed below: i) 3-day Workshop on Introduction to Android Operating System for Touch Screen Smart Phone was held during 11-13 June, 2014 at the Department of ETCE, Jadavpur University. The workshop was very useful to the students who got hands-on training on the use of Android platform for their own applications. ii) 1-day Special Lecture Series was held on 29 August, 2014 at the Department of ETCE, Jadavpur University where the experts from TCS Innovation Lab, Kolkata delivered Three Lectures on the state of the art Technologies in the areas of Cloud Computing, Security in Internet of Things (IoT) and Signal Processing & Sensor Fusion. July-December, 2014 Activity-Report for the IEEE Industry Applications Society: ANNUAL REPORT Dr. M. Sengupta, Chairman IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chapter, handing over the certificate of appreciation to Mr. Ananda Majumdar The IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chapter organizes technical lecture meetings, where eminent personalities from industry and academia are invited to deliver lectures on topics, which fall within the domain of the IA Society. Altogether, five nos. of such lecture-meetings were arranged in the year 2014, of which three nos. were arranged in the period July December, 2014. The brief details of these three lectures are given below. th The third technical lecture meeting was arranged on 10 September 2014 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. The technical lecture was presented by by Mr. Ananda Majumdar, General Manager- Marketing & Product Development MV Motors, Marathon Electric Motors Ltd., Kolkata on impact of variable speed drives and energy efficiency on induction motors, mainly from a manufacturer's perspective. The talk was on the effect and influence of variable speed electric drives on induction motors in general with special emphasis on how energy efficiency is affected. Other than how users are benefited, this talk focused on how a motor manufacturer has recently started looking into this whole issue in India. The lecture talked about the challenges that modern international and Indian specifications h a v e s t a r t e d t h r o w i n g a b o u t performance standards and how Indian motor manufacturing companies are being forced to change their functioning as far as modifying the traditional design procedures, manufacturing and testing infrastructure are concerned, in order to be and remain globally competitive. Sengupta, Chairman IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chapter, handing over the certificate of appreciation to Mr. Arijit Basuray ANNUAL REPORT The fourth technical lecture meeting was th hosted on 13 October 2014 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. This technical lecture meeting was on Nuclear Reactor Engineering by Mr. Subhadeep Sen, Scientific Officer-D, Control Engineer, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. KGS-3&4, Kaiga, Karnataka, India. This talk presented the basics of nuclear fission energy and its industrial application in nuclear power plant followed by a relatively longer discussion on nuclear power plant operation and its engineered safety features and three stage program of India. Later, some more advanced key issues related to operation and maintenance were presented and discussed. The talk was attended by 32 persons including 5 IEEE members. The fifth and last technical lecture meeting of IEEE IAS Kolkata for the year 2014 was arranged on th 14 November 2014 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Arijit Basuray, Managing Director and CEO, Neo-Teletronix Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata, India. The title of the lecture was, Pulsed Power and its application in Electrical Testing. Pulsed Power in electrical engineering, described as a system where stored electrical or magnetic energy is discharged as electrical energy into a load in a single short pulse or series of short pulses with controlled repetition rate, is gaining significance day by day. The talk stressed on the fact that pulsed power is not an alternative to traditional ac or dc power engineering. It is intended to solve other problems and deals with essentially different loads. The lecture demonstrated how pulse power technique has become almost inevitable in every sphere of life, like power engineering, plasma generation, Material and dielectric testing, generation of high repetition rate high power CO2 lasers, Electron injection into nuclear reactors, Electron accelerators, kilo amp linear accelerators, food preservation and many more. The lecture eventually presented a brief account of Pulsed Power Generation Techniques and its applications, particularly in testing of insulation of electrical equipment and components run under repetitive step voltages say stator winding of a variable voltage variable frequency driven motor. Several interesting practical field test reports with their analyses were discussed in the lecture. 36 participants including 5 IEEE members attended the programme.

July December 2014 IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, Kolkata Chapter Report on Activities during IEEE-CIS-Activity th IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Kolkata Chapter on 7 Nov., 2014 organized the following lecture in the Machine Intelligence Unit of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India Title: Genome annotation using signal processing and machine learning. Speaker: Dr. Suprakash Dutta, Department of Electrical Engg. and Computer Science, York University, Toronto, Canada. Venue: MIU Seminar room, Machine Intelligence Unit of Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata, India. Activity: The audience with 32 people including faculty members, master and doctoral students from Indian Statistical Institute and other institutes attended the Lecture. Dr. Dutta first discussed the fundamental of genome annotation including the challenges and application. Subsequently he discussed how signal processing and machine learning methodologies are useful for genome annotation. The lecture was more interacting in nature. Many important issues were raised and discussed. December 11, 2014 Half day program to Felicitate Prof. Renu Laskar, Clemson University, USA Venue: Bramho Balika Shikshalaya, Kolkata EVENT Professor Renu Laskar, Professor Emerita, Mathematical sciences, Clemson University, USA is a renowned mathematician. She is the first female Indian to receive a Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA in the year 1962. Professor Laskar set new standards for women in mathematics and she ranks among the top women in discrete mathematics. She worked with legendary Mathematiciands such as Raj Chandra Bose and Paul Erdős. Her perseverance and determination to overcome the obstacles on her way to reach this stature of a mathematician from a middle class indian family of Bihar in those days is striking and an example. IEEE WIE, Kolkata chapter organized a half -a day program to felicitate Prof. Renu Laskar at Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya, Rajabazar, Kolkata on December 11, 2014. About 160 students from class VII to X from two schools Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya and Santi Sangha Vidyayatan for Girls joined the program. The program was devided in two halves. In the first half Prof. Renu Laskar was felicited by IEEE WIE member Prof.Nabanita Das. Another member Prof. Susmits Sur Koley shared the short biography of Prof. Laskar with the audience. Prof. Laskar then delivered a lecture on Mathematics is fun. She shared her experience with the worlds' greatest mathematician. She explained the history of graph theory, a topic in mathematics which everyone faces in their everyday life. In the second half an extempore speech competition was organized for the students. Three students of each school took part in the competition. Their speech were appreciated very well by the audience. The program concluded with a small award ceremony to appreciate the students for their extempore speech.

September 25-26, 2014 Two days workshop on MATLAB: Basics and Applications Venue: Department of Instrumentation & Electronics Engineering, Jadavpur University, Kolkata EVENT th A two day workshop was organised by IEEE WIE Affinity Group, Kolkata chapter on 25 and th 26 of September 2014 on 'Matlab Basics and Applications' in the Department of Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering (IEE), Jadavpur University (JU), Salt Lake rd campus. The workshop was aimed for the 3 year students of the Polytechnic colleges.35 students both men and women of Electrical Engineering stream of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray Polytechnic, Jadavpur attended the workshop. The students were tutored on the MATLAB basics, its usages & applications and also about Simulink. Dr.Bhaswati Goswami, member of IEEE WIE Kolkata Chapter and Faculty of IEE,JU has given an introduction with a power point presentation about MATLAB and Simulink. The participants were provided with hard copy documents beforehand so that they can follow the instructions for using MATLAB and Simulink. The documents can also be used for future consultations. They were asked to check each of the instructions in the computers provided to them in groups of two. In a total 17 computers were set to be used by them. The volunteers of the IEE Department, which included the M. Tech students and Research Scholars, assisted them. The students learned to use and apply the basic instructions, functions and even could do MATLAB programming (creating the.m files) on their own. From the feedback it seems they enjoyed the learning. They also showed interest on such program in futurethey were given a certificate of participation on the same at th the end of the workshop on 26 evening. It was overwhelming to see them perform on their own at the end of the workshop, which gave an overall satisfaction to the volunteers as well as the learners. The participants also praised whole-heartedly the help they obtained from the volunteers and thanked the organizers and the volunteers for the program. The organiser also distributed certificate of appreciations to the volunteers, thanked them for their help without which it was not possible to make the workshop a grand success.

July 27, 2014 One-day outreach program on ENGLISH e- learning Venue: Pratyush, Barasat, West Bengal EVENT 'Pratyush' as we all know is an organization which is taking care of the education and grooming of a large number of underprivileged boy and girls of varying age group from a particular locality. The organization also includes the parents of the kids in their activities so that the children can get a better environment at home too.this time the visit had a special motive and we had a very special guest with us. Prof. Upamanyu Madhow, a faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engg. University of California, Santa Barbara, is working on a project to democratize English education to people all over the world having little or no knowledge of the language. He is in the process of developing a software which has been named 'GLENworld' to provide simple and user friendly method to help the aspirants gain communicative knowledge of English language through pictures and audio and video demonstrations. The idea behind the trip was to get feedback from the kids of Pratyush, how the system worked and future provision for introducing such courses to such less privileged children. Prof. Madhow on his laptop demonstrated the software which was projected through a LCD projector. Obviously the response was very good and Prof. Madhow was more than satisfied by the quick grasping power of the children. A cultural program followed which was totally organized by the children themselves. The performance and the anchoring were flawless

July 22-26, 2014 Summer School on Fundamentals of Digital Design Automation Venue: Indian Statistical Institute ( ISI ) Kolkata EVENT It was jointly organized by the Nanotechnology Research Triangle of Advanced Computing and Microelectronics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and the IEEE WIE Group of Kolkata Section. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Prof. Bhabani P. Sinha, Prof. C. A. Murthy, Professor incharge of CCSD, ISI, Dr. Arpan Pal from TCS Labs, Dr. Pritha Banerjee (WIE) and Prof. Susmita SurKolay. ty two participants were shortlisted from nearly hundred applicants. Out of which thirty one successfully participated on all five days. It started with a lecture on Cyberphysical Systems by Dr. Arpan Pal followed by an introductory talk on Digital Design Flow by Prof. Bhargab B. Bhattacharya. Lectures covering the three broad sub domains (VLSI Design, Verification and Testing) were delivered along with Lab sessions.

November 12, 2014 Evolution of Electrical Engineering in the perspective of IEEE Organized by: IEEE Student Branch/IEEE Members/ECE Department National Institute of Technology Rourkela NITR 2014 NL2 An invited talk was arranged by the Department of Electronics & th Communication Engineering NIT Rourkela on 12 November 2014 at 5.20PM. At the beginning, Dr S K Behera addressed the gallery with an introductory note. About 85 student participants including faculty members were present in this seminar. January 11, 2015 Plant visit trip to 1.5 MW Bio-gas Plant NIT Silchar Expert explaining the functional process IEEE student branch, NIT Silchar, has organized a plant visit to 1.5MW Bio-gas plant owned by New Gen Power Company Private Ltd., Chennai, INDIA, situated at Cachar district of Assam, INDIA. It was held on 11-Jan. 2015, to provide the participants an opportunity to have exposure and discuss with the field experts in the field of electrical power production from renewable energy sources. Several faculty members have accompanied PG & Ph. D. scholars to the plant visit, including Branch faculty advisor Dr. A. K. Goswami. Sri Krishnendu Nath, AGM (APDCL, Silchar-I division) also accompanied for the cause. Experts from New Gen (including some Chinese counterpart) explained the functional process of the plant, practically showing the initial start-up process. They use scrap woods as their raw material for power production. The plant is equipped with 3 sets of gas-engine and synchronous generator. It uses 2 stage cooling process (air and water cooling). Regular Student Workshops Organized by: IEEE Student Branch of Tezpur University Workshop On HTML Tezpur University Few Workshops have been organized during t h e w e e k e n d s o n regular basis. More than 50 IEEE members of different departments of School of Engineering Tezpur University attended these workshops. IEEE Student Branch, BIT Mesra, conducted a workshop on the C language for the freshmen. About 50 people attended this workshop, mostly from the circuital branches. The topics covered were: Basic C statements, keywords, identifiers, arrays, pointers, functions, recursion as well as the applications of each. The students had their doubts cleared and were also motivated by the m e t h o d a d o p t e d f o r teaching. July 19-20, 2014 Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata Organized by: IEEE Student Branch, Institute of Engineering and Management Annual Report The year 2014 saw the Student Branch of Institute of Engineering and Management conduct its biggest ever student paper contest thus far attracting students from not only around the country but also from countries like Japan.Prof. Gautam Chakraborty,(Iwate Prefectural University, Japan), Prof. Watanabe (Iwate Prefectural University, Japan) and Prof. Himadri Nath Saha (Branch Councilor of IEM Student Branch )were present in the session and addressed the audience indicating the rich heritage of IEEE and its impact on the professional engineers It was a two day affair wherein the participants presented their ideas to the judges and other college students. There were more than two hundred and fifty papers at the first of which only the top fifty were selected for presentation on these two days. The eventual winner was the team from CSE comprising of Subhasree Bose, Shreya Dugar, Sushmita Goswami and Suchismita Goswami for their aim at preserving water by means of an automatic water pumping system. There were many other papers like modification on merge sort, rerouting based on receiver feedback in real time streaming etc. on the whole it was two days of immense fun-filled competition amongst the students. December 19-21, 2014 EAIT 2014 Fourth International Conference on Emerging Applications of Information Technology Organized by : Computer Society of India Kolkata Chapter and Hosted by the Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata Event Report Encouraged by the responses of the academic community in earlier meetings of EAIT in 2006, 2011 and 2012, CSI Kolkata Chapter (CSIKC) organized the Fourth International Conference on Emerging Applications of Information Technology (EAIT 2014). The conference was hosted by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata from 19-21 Dec 2014. EAIT 2014 enjoyed the active collaboration and cooperation of both the academia and industry it had over 150 delegates in attendance. The conference was successful in achieving the aspiration to blend theory and practice, research and production, art and science. EAIT 2014 received 271 papers from 532 authors across the globe. Paper submission was online through Microsoft's Conference Management Tool (CMT). All papers were meticulously reviewed by more than 140 members of the Program Committee and additional reviewers. Review process was double-blind. Finally, 63 papers were selected for oral presentations. No-show has been sincerely discouraged for the spirit of the conference. The conference proceedings were published by TM IEEE and 62 presented papers will be available in IEEE Xplore. Pre-Conference Tutorial Session on December 19, 2014 The session was inaugurated by Prof. Pradipta Bandyopadhyay, Dean of Studies, ISI. Event Report Conference Inaugural Session on December 20, 2014 In welcoming the delegates, Prof. Aditya Bagchi, General Chair, presented the need of the hour in encouraging cutting edge research work, especially for the young researchers and wished EAIT to continue its recurrence as a biennial event. Mr. G S Rautela, Director General, National Council of Science Museums, Guest of Honor of the program, inaugurated the conference. Noted among the speakers were Prof. Ratnesh Kumar, Iowa State University, Prof. Ashok Srivastava, Louisiana State University, Prof. Madhavi K. Research papers were received from all parts of the globe, including US, India, China, Colombia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Algeria. Total 186 submissions were received, out of which 68 papers are published in the proceedings. All submitted papers had undergone double-blind-review by a strong team of reviewers and program committee members consisting of leading researchers around the globe. Further, a Student Research Symposium was held during December 23rd-24th, 2014 in conjunction with this event. The Symposium was open to graduate and undergraduate students in the application areas of Information Technology. Report on ICPDEN 2015 at NERIST ICPDEN 2015 1st Conference on Power, Dielectric and Energy Management at NERIST 2015 (ICPDEN 2015), an international conference (IEEE conference record no. 34443) was held at NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh, on January 10-11, 2015. The conference (www.icpden2015.org) was jointly organised by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Centre for Management Studies, NERIST with financial support from World Bank assisted NERIST TEQIP II project, CPRI, Bangalore and NHPC. The conference was technically sponsored by IEEE Kolkata Section, IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter and IEEE PES Kolkata Chapter. It provided a platform to share research in areas related to theory, development, applications, and evaluation in the field of power, dielectric, drives, energy and energy management, and industry applications with a special focus on SMARTGRID, Risk Management of Power Projects etc. Prof. Akhtar Kalam from Victoria University, Australia, Prof. Debatosh Guha, Chairman, IEEE Kolkata Section, Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, Chairman, IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter, Prof. D. Deka, HOD, Energy Department, Tezpur University, Mr. Kingshuk Chakraborty, Head- Risk Management at Hannover Re Risk Management Services India Pvt. Ltd. and Prof. R. M. Pant, Director, NIRD graced the conference as guests and speakers. Prof. P.K. Das, Director, NERIST welcomed the external delegates during the conference inaugural session, and given a brief outline about the achievements of NERIST. Prof. Saibal Chatterjee from Department of Electrical Engineering, NERIST was the Conference Chair. Mr. Shibabrata Choudhury from Centre for Management Studies, NERIST and Mr. Anu Kumar Das from Department of Electrical Engineering, NERIST were the joint coordinators of the conference. Around hundred papers from leading institutions and organizations in India and abroad were submitted for reviewing by experts from IITs, IISc and various reputed institutes and industries all over the world and thirty two peer-reviewed papers were selected for presentation during the conference. The selected papers presented in the conference in five technical sessions shall be uploaded to www.ieeexplore.ieee.org after the approval of the session chairs. Many young researchers of region were benefited out of Prof. Kalam's special session on 'How to publish papers on Journals of High Impact Factor'. After the valedictory session of the conference, a special session was also organised to convey the benefits of the IEEE. During this session Prof. Debatosh Guha, Chairman, IEEE Kolkata Section in presence of Prof. Akhtar Kalam elaborated the benefits of student memberships and student chapters. They also pointed out the procedure to organise an IEEE conference. He encouraged young faculties of the north eastern region to come forward to carry out more such events. Further Prof. Guha assured to bridge the geographical location hindrances through the help of ICT tools. Delegates from IEEE and the conference also visited different laboratories of NERIST during the conference.
