CIMA S RESEARCH APPLICATION PROCESS CIMA s charter t advance the science f management accunting frms the cre f ur academic research strategy and guides ur research gals. Research is fundamental t CIMA s verall value chain as it ensures that we are adding value t the prfessin and identifying new issues r trends that emerge in the marketplace. As such, CIMA is keen t identify and wrk with academics and practitiners wh are ding research in the area f management accunting and can ffer insight int different subject areas. Each applicatin is judged n its academic rigur, quality, riginality and ptential cntributin t CIMA s research bjectives and accuntants in business. CIMA runs up t three research initiatives a year n a range f tpics and researchers frm arund the wrld are eligible t apply. Guidance ntes Research and Develpment Department 2. APPLYING FOR A CIMA RESEARCH GRANT CIMA invites research prpsals which seek t develp the science f management accunting. CIMA s current areas f interest can be fund n its Research webpage at www.cimaglbal.cm/research Yur research applicatin will be peer reviewed by a minimum f 4 external academics and practitiners, wh assess the rigur and relevance f all applicatins and recmmend applicatins t CIMA s Research and Develpment Panel and General Charitable Trust fr funding. The Research team f CIMA s Applied Research Unit administers and manages the research prcess. CIMA s General Charitable Trust make the final decisin n whether r nt a research grant is awarded. Prject budget Grants between 5,000 and 40,000 are available depending n the scpe f the prject Grant applicatins must be submitted in Punds Sterling. All grants will be fixed in Punds Stirling n the date the cntract is signed. Applicatins must prvide a detailed breakdwn f csts fr each stage f a prject. Fr example, stages might include prject set-up, desk research, fieldwrk, analysis, reprting and disseminatin. Eligible csts include: Telephne, printing & pstage, Travel & accmmdatin (nt subsistence) Purchase r rental f special sftware 1 r databases Secretarial services directly related t the prject Research assistant (but nt full salary csts). Prpsals including substantial amunts fr teaching buy-ut are unlikely t be successful. Please set aside 1,000 f yur budget t cver the typesetting and printing csts f the final research reprt, which will be arranged by CIMA Certain csts are nt cvered in the funding award and will nt be reimbursed. These csts include, but are nt limited t: Subsistence csts incurred while travelling Capital grants fr buildings Hardware and ther equipment, including vice recrders, memry sticks, laptps etc. Day-t-day ffice running expenses r premises/ accmmdatin fees 1 The purchase f sftware is evaluated n a case by case basis. Researchers shuld submit a shrt business case n the need and the benefits that this sftware will bring t the prject. Each case will be evaluated by CIMA staff. CIMA can decide t purchase the sftware itself and make it available t the researcher, but withut giving up wnership. Alternatively CIMA can allw the researcher t purchase the sftware. In general the legal title t any purchased sftware and equipment will remain with CIMA at the end f the prject, unless CIMA has agreed therwise with the researcher. page 3 f 7

Other Funding CIMA is happy t c-spnsr research prjects. Other funding rganisatins r Institutes, which have been apprached fr funding related t this wrk, shuld be detailed and any cntracted utputs and IP rights shuld be utlined. Prject invicing Yur Finance Officer (r Research Accuntant) will be the main cntact fr invice queries. Please include a cntact telephne number and e-mail address in yur applicatin. CIMA shuld be prmptly ntified f any changes in staff and updated cntact details shuld be frwarded. Invices shuld clearly break dwn prject csts in alignment with the grant applicatin submitted t CIMA. Researchers may request t submit invices in anther majr currency (e.g. US$, AU$, HK$, NZ$, Can$, Eurs, RMB, Yen). CIMA will cnvert the amunt requested t Pund Sterling at the current exchange rate at the time the invice is issued. If there is any majr vlatility in the exchange rate then CIMA will review the value f the grant. Cntract The funding will be prvided by CIMA s General Charitable Trust (GCT). A standard cntract is used fr all research prjects. The cntract will be signed by the GCT. The clauses have been drafted and agreed by the CIMA Research and Develpment Panel and CIMA s lawyers. It is the researcher s respnsibility t ensure that their university can agree t the cntract befre submitting the applicatin. A cpy f the cntract is available fr dwnlad n the CIMA research website at www.cimaglbal.cm/research. Please ask yur university r institutin t review the cntract prir t submitting an applicatin t ensure the clauses in the cntract are agreeable t them. Cntracting Parties The cntracting parties (including the researcher s institutin if applicable) will be thse named n the final cntract and therefre the full and crrect legal title is essential. All crrespndence will be addressed t the Principal Researcher nly. All ther researchers shuld be named (except fr research assistants nt yet appinted). Please nte that the Principal Researcher shuld be the primary investigatr and nt the name f the supervisr. Data Prtectin. Please nte that due t the Data Prtectin Act 1998 requirements, CIMA will nt give researchers access t its membership database. page 4 f 7

It als prmtes prjects n the CIMA website. References Referees will be apprached fr shrtlisted candidates and are expected t respnd t CIMA within 3-4 days f the request being sent. Where the Principal Researcher has limited r n previus experience f research, the name f a respnsible persn willing t prvide academic supervisin, shuld be prvided. The named persn will be apprached by CIMA t cnfirm his/her willingness t fulfil the rle. Submitting yur prpsal CIMA s Research and Develpment Department administers and manages the research prcess. Timescale Be realistic and ensure yur delivery dates are achievable. Prgress reprts are expected thrughut the life f the prject 2. CIMA checks researchers track recrd f prducing reprts n time and within budget. PROJECT DETAILS Summary Outline the bjectives, scpe and apprach fr the prject, prpsed utputs and intended audience, utcmes i.e. what des the prject expect t achieve. Yur summary shuld cver return n investment t CIMA (e.g. PR, brand recgnitin, innvative disseminatin channels and methds, practitiner take aways, etc). Please utline hw yur prject will cmplement CIMA s psitin in this area f research and expected benefits t Prfessinal Accuntants in Business (PAIBs), emplyers, gvernments, etc. Backgrund The backgrund sectin f yur frm shuld be succinct. It shuld explain: why yur prpsed research shuld be dne why nw why by yu whether yu have cnducted previus research in this area what yu expect yur prject t add t the current bdy f research in this area Use clear, cncise and nn-academic English s that the prpsal is accessible t bth academic and practitiner reviewers. Detailed Prject Plan Yur prject plan shuld set ut: the research methdlgy with justificatin the ppulatin yu plan t research (recruitment plan, evidence f cntacts made, methd f sampling) explain yur backup plan fr the prject (what if the expected results are nt generated frm the initial research methdlgy/questinnaire). Where access is required it is vital fr the prject plan t identify a Plan B list f rganisatins. 2 Prgress reprts shuld be submitted quarterly as indicated until all the utputs f the prject have been submitted t CIMA. page 6 f 7

Therefre, staff time, resurce requirements and travel shuld be disclsed. Existing Literature Existing literature relevant t the prject shuld be identified. Expected Outputs Please list the utputs that yu expect t prduce frm this research. Outputs shuld be practitiner, nt academic. At a minimum CIMA expects researchers t prduce: an executive reprt; and an article fr its member magazines (Insight, FM, Velcity) Yu may als be asked t present a wrkshp/frum/webcast fr CIMA members. Pririty will be given t prjects with innvative utputs, which will benefit practitiners. CVs Submit a ne page CV fr each f the researchers that yu expect t be wrking n the prject. CVs shuld include details f any current and previus research and be pasted int the applicatin, nt submitted separately. page 7 f 7
