Memory Corner When a Loved One with Alzheimer s Doesn t Recognize You By Ava M. Stinnett In early-stage dementia or Alzheimer s disease, intermittent symptoms of mild cognitive decline such as word searching, forgetfulness, and trouble concentrating and problem-solving are visible. As the disease advances, lapses in people s memories become even more apparent. Such lapses can cause an inability to remember or recognize family members. As a result, some family relationships diminish, leaving the person with Alzheimer s isolated and lonely. It s normal to feel sad, hurt, or abandoned, but keep in mind it s not personal, but the effects of the disease. What can you do? First, remember that even when memory is gone, emotions remain. Your loved one may still be able to pick up on vibes and read body language. Proceed with conversation even if the person appears unresponsive. To encourage engagement, the Alzheimer s Foundation of America recommends using the 4S s for communicating: simple, slow, show, and smile. Simple sentences are much appreciated by someone with Alzheimer s. Say it slow to allow enough time to capture words or questions. Show what you re saying, using facial expressions, body language and gesturing. And smile it goes a long way. Next, avoid peppering your loved one with the question Do you know who I am? Rather, introduce yourself by name and relationship, such as I m Josephine, your daughter and Here s my husband, Mike. Instead of trying to figure out what the person remembers, be reassuring by maintaining eye contact, calling them by name, smiling, and holding their hand as you remind them who you are. It s possible that you ll have to introduce yourself a number of times. Try to resist the urge to speak louder to make it easier for the person to understand. Slow down and provide time for understanding and processing what you ve said. It may seem pointless to stay in contact with a loved one who is unable to recognize the faces of family and friends. However, there are numerous benefits that come from visiting with people who have advanced dementia. Social wellness making and keeping genuine, nurturing connections with others is critical to physical and psychological health and may help delay cognitive impairment. Sources Bursack, C.B. (n.d.) Dear Residents, Families, Friends and Staff, It certainly looks like Spring has sprung around here. I love this warm weather. I am looking forward to the warmer night and it staying lighter longer. I hope you are all enjoying the new café. Thank you again for your patience during the close and actual remodel. All that is left to do is hang some art work. As you all know Shantel is no longer with us. We are very sad to see her go, but wish her all the best on her new journey. We have some big shoes to fill. We are in the process of interviewing for the position. As soon as we hire someone I will let you know. We have many guest coming to our Easter Brunch. I hope you enjoy the Brunch on the 1st, and get a chance to visit with the Easter Bunny. I am so proud of our Memory Care Unit who took second place in the company for the Quarterly Creation, which was their interpretation of the famous picture of the kiss between the V-J Day sailor and nurse in New York city in 1945. If you get a chance to stop the unit take a look at their amazing creation. I hope you all enjoy your Easter and the wonderful Spring month. Best Regards, Lisa Schumann Executive Director

Frances was born 1st September 1931 in New York City. Daughter of Eleanor and Henry, her Dad owned their apartment building and they lived on the second floor. He also owned a gas station behind the family home. As a child, she loved to go swimming in the neighborhood pool with her brother, Gene and while at High School took secretarial courses. On moving to California, she worked as a secretary for Aerojet in Asuza. This is where she met her husband, Jim. After having raised four children, she worked for Sears in the jewelry department for 12 years. Later, during her retirement - pastimes have included bingo, shopping, the love of gambling; playing poker and spoiling her five grandchildren and ten grandkids. Merry Hines has been with Carlton for a year 6 months but is not new to the industry. She's been a caregiver for over 10 years, serving residents with Dementia related illnesses. Her passion has always been to help people. That passion led her to become a great caregiver. She enjoys providing for the elderly. She treats every resident like she would treat her grandparents. She goes above and beyond to provide exceptional care. Her dedication and commitment was on display when awarded the trophy for Anual Best of the Best for the best Memory Care Caregiver in the company. We are glad to have Merry a part of our team at Carlton.

What is the Quarterly Creation Contest? Our Memory Care residents spend three months creating a unique interpretation of a famous piece of art. Each community then submits their creation and one is honored for its creativity and uniqueness. This quarter the photo that was selected was the famous couple kissing in NYC after WWII ended. The residents at Downtown saw the photo and reminisced about their past and their loved ones. The staff then assisted them to create a miniature New York City by cutting out photos, tarring foil, and putting it all together with paint and glitter. Finally the residents looked through old photo albums and the staff made copies of the residents favorite photos. These photos were then used to cover large block letters spelling LOVE. Join us in congratulating Downtown Pleasant Hill on their creative interpretation!

Maintaining Independence Through Exercise Regular exercise can help seniors remain healthier and more independent as they age. Studies have shown that seniors who exercise regularly have longer life expectancies, remain independent longer, and improve both physically and psychologically. Balance decreases as we age, and more importantly, falling is a major problem. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of every three Americans over the age of 65 falls each year, and among individuals 65-84, falls account for 87% of all fractures and are the second leading cause of spinal cord and brain injuries. Many seniors believe that walking is enough exercise to stay fit and healthy. But, according to Dr. Robert Sweezy, renowned osteoporosis expert, walking is not enough to increase muscle and bone density - a key component in remaining independent. The Live 2 B Healthy program is proven to increase balance, mobility and strength - directly reducing falls and injuries that could hamper senior mobility and hasten health decline. That keeps seniors vital and independent for much longer. It is never too late to start an exercise regimen. Many seniors in their eighties and nineties, who have never exercised in their lives, now participate in Live 2 B Healthy programs. In fitness tests, after working with participants for three months, balance had improved by over 250% and cardiovascular function by over 80% by doing regular strength training, three times per week. Regular exercise keeps seniors independent by improving their balance and endurance to prevent falls, injuries, as well as physical and cognitive decline. u www.live2bhealthy.com u
