Marie Curie applica/on We ve been collabora/ng with the professor at the Ins/tute for Public Health Genomics at UM since 2006 and she invited me to work there. Project: P4- MEDICINE@EU Evalua/on of a Best Prac/ce Model for Personalized Health Care within Public Health Genomics Proposal I wrote the proposal in June- July 2010. Got feedbacks/approval of the supervisor and another colleague Got feedback from UM FHML Fundraiser Willem Wolters at CRISP Got reference lezers Applied in August 2010
AQer the applica/on Results were declared in November 2010 (only scores). Invita/on to nego/a/on in December 2010 (good news before Christmas holiday). Prepara/on and signing of the Grant Agreement between EC and UM (January- April 2011) Employment contract (April 2011) Project: 1 May 2011-30 April 2013 Suspended and extended due to maternity and parental leaves and ended on 12 February 2014.

Some of the success factors - I Complementarity between the fellow, her past career, the project, the host and the future career plans. The project and the host was a natural con/nuum of my past career. The project and the host was one of the most reasonable future I could pursue. Not a classical (academic) research career, but a successful one. Past achievements An innova/ve service model in health care Not always necessarily publica/ons The reference lezers also complemented the main messages in the proposal. I set an asser/ve career goal and a coherent strategy to reach that.
Some of the success factors - II The proposal was reflec/ng me. Moving from one sector (privately funded research) to another one (academic research) Experience with wri/ng project proposals Experience with EC Framework Programmes (partnered an FP6 Integra/ve Project)

Recommenda/ons - I First Choose your supervisor wisely. Ask opinions of the researchers he/she supervised before. Planning Read, study and understand the MC Fellowship (applica/on) guidelines very well. The main output of the MC Fellowships are 'fellows' with new skills (not only technical and scien/fic, but also complementary skills ). Horizon 2020 is a research and innova/on programme for all sectors, not only academia, not the same with conven/onal academic post- doc fellowships, such as Veni. You can talk to Willem Wolters at CRISP, FHML, UM. Very responsive and helpful.
Recommenda/ons - II Planning (cont.) Make your /ming wisely. Consider summer holidays of The supervisor Wri;ng People who can give you feedback Be genuine; be sincere. Be open; be consistent when wri/ng the proposal. Make sure that it is the right person, right project, right host. Excellent research is not enough. Beware of the buzz words (inter- sectoral and inter- disciplinary work, hands- on training, training through research, complementary skills, etc.). Be crea/ve on how to achieve your complementary skills.
Other Recommenda/ons - III Grant agreement prepara/ons (nego/a/ons) BeZer to involve in that process Read financial guidelines; ask ques/ons as and when necessary Salary and other benefits of Marie Curie Fellows AZrac/ve but also depends on the country Talk/write to Marie Curie fellows in that country/ins/tu/on, e.g. via LinkedIn groups or Na/onal Contact Points of the host country Maternity and parental leaves: as other researchers in that university If you are new to grant wri/ng, consider going to courses and workshops about it.
