Emergency System for the Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals (ESAR-VHP)
ESAR-VHP Mission ESAR-VHP works with states to establish a national network of state-based programs for preregistration of volunteer health professionals. Working within this network of verified credentials and up-to-date information, volunteers are able to serve at a moment's notice, within their state or across state lines, to provide needed help during an emergency. -http://www.phe.gov/esarvhp/pages/about.aspx
Why do we need ESAR-VHP? Immediately after the attacks on September 11, 2001, tens of thousands of people traveled to ground zero in New York City to volunteer and provide medical assistance... In most cases, authorities were unable to distinguish those who were qualified from those who were not no matter how well intentioned. -http://www.phe.gov/esarvhp/pages/about.aspx
Protect Volunteers Title 37-B, Section 784 A person holding a professional license in the State may be designated a member of the emergency management forces in that professional capacity only after the individual or the license issuer provides confirmation of a valid license Volunteers that are deployed through Maine Responds will receive liability and Worker s Comp protection as a member of the state s official emergency management forces
In Maine we call ESAR-VHP Maine Responds
ESAR-VHP = Maine Responds www.maineresponds.org
