PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To strategically lead the development, co-ordination and implementation of the Nurse Entry to Practice (NETP) & Graduate Programme (Mental Health) across the hospital and community sector of Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB). To work in collaboration with Nurse Coordinator Post Graduate Education. To provide nursing leadership, across the secondary sector, establishing strong partnership with all professional groups in consultation with all key stakeholders. NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES Key Accountability PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT To provide strategic direction and leadership by: Expectations Ensures that CMDHB s programme is consistent with Nursing Council of New Zealand and Health Workforce New Zealand requirements. Ensures that the ongoing development of professional practice of the Graduate Nurses meets standards of nursing practice, the Nursing Council s competencies, CMDHB s Policies Procedures and Guideline, Health and Disabilities, Patient Code of Rights. Actively promotes the inter-professional and nursing team approach to patient care in aspects of the programme development, implementation and ongoing reviews. Continuously strives to be a leader in the ongoing development of NETP & Graduate Nurse Programmes within New Zealand. Demonstrates creativity and an innovative approach to the ongoing development of the programme. Acts as a role model to all nursing staff as a professional, skilled and experienced Registered Nurse. Proactively participates in professional debate, development and in advancing nursing practice. Advocates on behalf of the NETP & Graduate Programme to ensure that the organisation recognises the value added and the ongoing need of such a programme. Always demonstrates the visions and values of CMDHB and the nursing philosophy. Key Accountability To assist with ongoing workforce development Assist with coordination of study days and tutorial sessions for the Graduate Nurses: Expectations Graduate programme across CMDHB. To work in conjunction with the Director of Nursing and General Managers to identify the annual requirements and clinical needs of NETP & Graduate Nurses for CMDHB region. Actively participates in the annual business planning processes to identify the required resources to effectively and efficiently manage the NETP & Graduate Nurse Programme. Establishes and utilises networks with nursing education providers in nationally promoting and marketing CMDHB as an ideal employer of graduate nurses. Actively participates in the organisation s ongoing workforce planning and development initiatives. Develops, implements and reviews on an ongoing basis the performance management and development systems for the NETP & Graduate Nurses. To work in collaboration with the recruitment team to promote the programme regionally within tertiary institutes. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the Graduate recruitment process with the recruitment team. Ensure the collection of key recruitment and retention data. Ensures a system is in place to monitor individual performance and that poor performance is managed in accordance with the organisation s requirements. Works collaboratively with the Nurse Educator & Clinical Coach NETP, Charge Nurse Managers/Team Leaders to manage performance issues. Attend the NPDU advisory committee to ensure the involvement of stakeholders in key decision making processes. Assist NETP Nurse Educators with the Educational Programme. Involvement in the assessment of post graduate paper learning outcomes Collaborate with University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology and Nurse Educator group to ensure smooth delivery of post-graduate education. Assist with facilitating study days Ensures nursing council competencies and organisational requirements are incorporated into the programme curriculum Establishes key performance indicators and data Page 5 of 11

Establishes processes and systems to ensure that individual Graduate Nurses are monitored to ensure they meet the programme requirements To provide mentorship and coaching: Networks with key stakeholders across all sectors to ensure that the philosophy and requirements of the programmes are met. Provides opportunity for coaching and mentoring for those involved in both programmes. Utilises own expert knowledge and skills to identify the immediate and potential needs of the nurses participating in both programmes Actively promotes evidenced based best practice and research. Provides feedback to key stakeholders re ongoing individual nurses development Manages conflict in conjunction with key stakeholders in accordance with the Human resource policies of the employing organisations. Ensures the nurse incorporates the cultural needs and sensitivities for the individual and his/her family/whanau. To ensure effective use of resources by: Develops and maintains effective and comprehensive assessments of nurses and communicates these back to the individual and other appropriate staff Develops and implements evaluation systems and ensures record keeping and documents are complete and appropriate to meet all reporting requirements of the NETP Expansion programme. To contribute to the effective functioning of the NETP & Graduate Nurse Programme by: To participate in the organisation s continuous quality improvement by: Seeks feedback and ensures that issues are addressed Ensures systems are in place to optimise the development of individual nurse s clinical practice. Oversees and provides direction to ensure that the nursing staff involved in the programme have an effective orientation and preceptor programme as per Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements. Actively promotes and encourages the nurse to complete his/her PDRP portfolio as per Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements. Develops, implements and reviews the annual NETP & Graduate Nurse Programme Quality Plan Complies with the organisation s complaints, incident policies, infection control policies, patient safety programme policies and processes. PROBLEM COMPLEXITY The Nurse Coordinator NETP & Graduate programme will be regularly challenged by a wide range of recruitment, human relationship difficulties during nurse s first year of clinical practice. There will be a requirement to be able to prioritise issues and negotiate time frames, while still providing a quality nursing service The range of problems will be diverse and require solutions customised to meet the circumstances of both the nursing team in which the Graduate nurse is placed and with the individual nurses. Therefore opportunities will arise to provide innovative options for respective parties. There will be demands to meet deadlines, maintain accuracy and quality of information. Will update and refer to the Nurse Leader, Nursing Professional Development Unit for advice and consensus opinion. SCOPE FOR ACTION The Graduate Nurse Coordinator will be empowered to make decisions and recommendations relating to the advisory boards for the first year of clinical practice. The incumbent is encouraged to use initiative and problem solving skills to develop innovative approaches to issues.
