01 Introduction of KSIF The world becomes friends of Korea through King Sejong Institute When you want to learn a language or feel the culture of a country in person, what would you do? Foreigners who want to learn Korean, foreigners who want to know more about the Korean culture, where would they go? They turn to King Sejong Institute(KSI). KSI is a little Korea in foreign countries, KSI is an oasis that can quench foreigners thirst for the Korean language and culture and a treasure chest containing glittering stories about Korea. King Sejong Institute Foundation(KSIF) hopes that Korea will become a friend of all the people around the world through KSI. King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF) KSIF is a public institution that supports King Sejong Institute (KSI), an overseas education institute for Korean language and culture. KSIF was founded in October 2012 in accordance with Clause 2 of Article 19 of the Framework Act on the Korean Language to generally manage and oversee the Korean government s task of spreading the Korean language and culture. Objective The objective of KSIF is to efficiently disseminate the Korean language as a foreign language or as a second language. Designation of KSIs and Operational Support Types of KSI General type : KSI that is operated by a local institute in a foreign country either independently or through cooperation with an institute in Korea or with diplomatic offices : Designation as KSI is performed after carrying out documentation screening and on-site due diligence of the applying organizations. Cooperation type Qualification requirements for designation Established by Local institution *A government organization, a university (graduate school) or a university-affiliated institute in a foreign country that is operating or wishes to operate a Korean language institute *A non-profit company or a private organization officially registered in a foreign country that is operating or wishes to operate a Korean language institute for the public good : KSI that is operated by the KSIF in collaboration with public institutions and others : It is strategically designated through work cooperation and signing of the agreement between the KSIF Private education institutions not included and public institutions Connected institution Cultural Center type : KSI that is operated by the Korean Cultural Center : The Korean language course operated by the Korean Cultural Center is designated as KSI without separate designation procedures. *A Korean government organization (diplomatic establishment abroad, etc.) or a local government that is operating or wishes to directly operate a Korean language institute in a foreign country or through consignment with another organization. *A Korean university (graduate school) or a non-profit organization/private organization which is operating or wants to operate Korean language institute in a foreign country in cooperation with an overseas institution for the public good Designation Procedures of KSIs December Apply for Designation Publication of Public Notice January Application March Documentation Screening and Announcement of Documentation Screening Results March~April Site Visit *For details, please refer to the notifications on the homepage of the KSIF (Standard for 2015 Screening Schedule) May Final Screening and Announcement of Final Screening Results Private education institutions established in accordance with the Act on the Establishment and Operation of Private Teaching Institutes and Extracurricular Lessons not included Facilities (Classroom) More than 2 classrooms that can accommodate over 10 students (Library) Korean language and culture materials available in a library (Administrative office) An administrative office for managing the operation of KSI Teachers Details of Support for KSIs Support for operation - Granting operation subsidy to KSIs - Offering support for facility improvement in order to enhance the education environment of KSIs (Koream language faculty) All faculty members have satisfied the following conditions at leastt 1 A person with a Korean language teacher s license 2 A college graduate who majored (double majored) or had a minor in teaching the Korean language - Providing Business Management System for the operation and management of the KSI s administration as a foreign language Support for Korean language education - Sending qualified Korean language teachers abroad - Providing standard curriculum for KSIs 3 A person who has completed the Korean Language Teacher Education Program 4 A person who earned a bachelor s degree or above in language and literature or language education and also has a minimum of 1 year experience in teaching the Korean language - Providing standard textbooks, workbooks, guidebooks for teachers, questions for evaluating student achievement through Sejong Korean Achievement Test (*Teaching materials for learners use should be purchased by each individual) (Cultural Instructor) A candidate holds a bachelor's degree in lectures or has at least 2 years experience in the related field Support for education on Korean culture - Sending culture specialist - Providing Korean culture program - Offering support for training program for invited outstanding students to Korea Curriculum - Open at least 2 Beginner or Intermediate courses and provide classes for more than 30 weeks a year - Provide a 120+ minute (including break) Korean language class a week Others - Online Education Support: Provides online lectures and educational materials for Nuri-Sejong Hakdang - Teachers Re-education Support: Provides courses fostering teachers to conduct re-education for Korean language teachers and to enhance the qualifications - Cooperation Network Establishment Support: Support for exchanges to take place through World Korean Operation - Designate KSI head to oversee and manage the institute - Have more than 1 operation staff who is either Korean or proficient in the Korean language - Open and manage a separate account for support funds in operating KSI Language Educators Conference and Training Programs by region 09

Reinforcement of Support for professionalism Korean language among Korean education language teachers Operation of Standard Korean Language Curriculum - A standardized Korean language curriculum is provided to KSIs around the world. - The Standard Korean Language Curriculum of KSI is operated based on the Standard Model of World Common Education of Korean Language. Sending qualified Korean language teachers abroad Qualified Korean language teachers are sent to KSIs in regions where Korean language teachers are required. Employment is created overseas for Korean language teachers who are qualified pursuant to the Framework Act on Korean Language. Dispatch procedures Standard textbook and educational materials - KSIs use <Sejong Korean> as the standard textbook. - A guidebook for teachers are developed and distributed to ensure that teachers can guide students efficiently. - Workbooks which are customized per region and per language are developed in consideration of the local education environment to enhance the effectiveness of education. For details, please refer to the notifications on the homepage of KSIF Evaluating Achievement of <Sejong Korean> - It is a test that checks up on the achievements of KSI students after completing the studies of each level. - It is comprised of listening, reading, writing and speaking, evaluating the overall competence of the Korean language. - It enhances the competitiveness and public confidence of the KSI s education by standardizing the student s evaluation standards. Operation of Korean language teacher education program The program is to support Korean language educators in license acquisitions (3rd degree) and to specialize the education of KSI by providing education programs for KSI teachers who have not acquired a teacher s license Korean Speaking Contest - Korean Speaking Contest is hosted to increase the motivation of students of Korean language all over the world. - An opportunity to receive Training on Korean Culture is provided to the finalists. Online Course (75 hours) + Offline Course (45 hours) + Evaluation Test Completion 11

Establishment of Korean Language Education Cooperation Network Support for Korean culture education of KSI World Korean Language Educators Conference - It establishes a cooperation network of Korean educators around the world by inviting KSI teachers once a year. - The education status of Korean language around the world and case studies are shared while re-education is conducted through training in order to strengthen the expertise of overseas Korean language educators. Development and operation of Korean culture curriculum - Culture curriculum is developed and operated from the perspective of inter-culturalism in order to assist foreigners in broadening their interest and understanding of Korea. Sending Korean culture experts - Korean culture experts are dispatched to KSIs through collaboration with professional institutes such as Korea National University of Arts. Regionally Hosted Training Programs - Relevant officers and educators of KSIs and Korean language education institutes with in the region are invited to seek collaboration measures and mutual development among Korean language institutes within the region. - The teaching methods of Korean language that have been customized by region and by language are shared to strengthen the expertise of overseas Korean language education. Production and Distribution of materials to experience Korean culture - Materials necessary for foreign learners to experience the Korean culture are produced and distributed to KSIs. Invitation for outstanding students to Korean culture training program - Outstanding students of KSIs are invited to Korea annually to provide them with an opportunity to experience the Korean culture. : Through learning and experiential training on culture, students would be able to learn about Korean culture in depth. : Students are provided with an opportunity to visit popular spots of Korean seen in Korean dramas and movies. : Scholarships would be offered during the training period to provide an opportunity for students to attend short-term trainings in Korea. 13

Operation of Business Management System - Business Management System is operated to systematically manage various businesses such as designation and operation of KSIs and sending teachers overseas. - It systematically manages statistical information related to KSI, contributing to prompt decision-making. - By establishing and operating an effective system, it enhances the work efficiency of KSIs overseas. - Providing teaching materials for Korean language teachers 1 It provides self-training programs for Korean language teachers to enhance their expertise. 2 Teaching plans, guidelines for teachers and multimedia teaching materials are provided for teachers to utilize for preparing Korean language classes. 3 Information related to teacher s license and employment information is provided for those who wish to become Korean language teachers. Providing the homepages for KSIs - Homepages for individual institutes are provided to view the current status of KSIs worldwide. - By typing city name (in English).sejonghakdang.org, you would be able to see the location and information of the relevant institute in the region. - Information including education schedules, event plans and event pictures can be shared via the individual KSIs homepages worldwide. Development of materials for Korean language and culture education - Teaching and learning materials that can be utilized by teachers in the class and contents that can help foreigners who are interested in the Korean language and culture to have fun in learning are developed. - Educational materials for Korean language and culture are developed so that they can be used in various environments including Internet, mobile phones and mobile PCs. - Fun contents are developed for Korean language and culture education in Korean based on images such as webtoons, lowering the barrier of the Korean language education. 15

Evaluation of KSIs Evaluation of the operation of KSIs The operation of KSIs and their education is inspected once a year to ensure internal stability of KSIs. The situation of the institute s operation is objectively evaluated to identify outstanding case studies and to formulate effective support measures. Satisfaction survey of students Lecture evaluations are conducted for each semester among the students of KSIs to gather their opinions on the education of KSIs and their demand in Korean language and culture. Satisfaction survey of students is conducted on the facilities of KSI and the general curriculum to improve the operation of KSI. PR Activities of KSI Periodical magazine < King Sejong Institute > - Periodical magazines are published twice a year to deliver news about KSIs worldwide. - The visions and objectives of KSIF are delivered to raise the awareness of the KSIF s roles. - News on KSI is shared to bring KSIs closer to each other and to improve the sense of belonging among KSIs. < KSIF Newsletter > issued every month - News on KSIF is delivered once a month via e-mail. - Information on the Korean language and culture which helps Nuri-Sejong Hakdang members and KSI is provided. - Monthly news on events and businesses are notified to enable easy participation of KSIs and students Exhibition support and - We take part in various overseas exhibitions to promote KSI, the Korean language and culture. distribution of PR materials - Promotional materials on Korea are produced by cooperating with overseas PR agencies to support KSIs. - Supports for exhibition materials are given to promote KSI and overseas Korean language education status by cooperating with museums and exhibit halls. 17

KSIF is supported through the sponsorship of companies and institutes to reinforce the foundation for the Korean language and culture education. Types of Sponsorship You can sponsor various businesses conducted by the foundation for the globalization of the Korean language and culture. Areas of Sponsorship Sponsored fund, valuables and goods are used for distributing the Korean language and culture overseas. Support for Korean language education The contribution is used for the businesses operated by the foundation for the development of Korean language education worldwide. Through the Korean language education, the people around the world would be able to have a new dream that is related to Korea. - Hosting of Korean Speaking Contests - Sending qualified Korean language teachers abroad - Development of online Korean language learning contents How to sponsor General donations The sponsorship to support the KSIF s business that is in urgent need of support at the time of donation.
