He has been involved in the suppression of more than one thousand fires in the positions of Firefighter, Company Officer and Incident Commander. He has also conducted hundreds of practical training exercises on firefighting tactics for his department and other area departments. Lieutenant Erwin became the for the City in May of 2009. In this position he has conducted more than two hundred fifty fire investigations. To supplement this experience, he investigates fires while employed with Unified Investigations and Sciences where he has investigated a broad range of fires which require specialists from multiple fields. Nathan Erwin also has a strong construction background. As a HVAC installer, carpenter and firefighter, he has worked on thousands of various types of structures. The knowledge of construction types and building systems has been an essential part of his fire investigations. Nathan Erwin is experienced in many types of fire investigations varying from but not limited to, large scale commercial losses with multiple interested parties to criminal investigations with an incendiary cause. He has prepared origin and cause reports of incendiary fires that have resulted in guilty pleas of arson in criminal court. He has testified in court rooms and in depositions in criminal and civil cases. He has identified and secured various types of evidence on both fire and criminal investigations. Hundreds of debris samples he has collected tested positive for trace ignitable liquids in a forensic laboratory. Latent print identifications and other forensic evidence he has secured have been used as part of criminal investigations, including multiple cases that have resulted in guilty verdicts. 4
