Box 4 Street Address: km-42 Paholyothin Highway Tel: (+66 2) 524 6369, 6387 Fax: (+66 2) 524 6431 E-mail: Ocean@ait.asia http:www.serd.ait.asia Asia Region Biennial Meeting of The International Association for the Study of Commons (IASC) AIT- 2018 Redefining Diversity and Dynamism of Natural Resources Management in Asia We would like to invite you to the Asia Region Biennial IASC Meeting, 2018: Redefining Diversity and Dynamism of Natural Resource Management in Asia. The conference is organised by the Ostrom Center for the Advanced Study in Natural Resource Governance (OCeAN) at AIT (Asian Institute of Technology) and takes place on 13-16 July 2018, in AIT,. In the this meeting, we plan to organize two to three days of presentation and discussion sessions followed by one day of field trip at multiple locations on issues related to the governance of community managed forests and irrigation systems in Central. We intend to pay special attention to bring forward community forestry and irrigation issues of South and South East Asia, for global audiences and policymakers. Topics to be addressed by the papers and sessions at the meeting will cover a broad spectrum of research questions, but the following issues are specifically of interest to seek answers to: a) How can economic growth be prudent together with holding natural resources intact? b) How has decentralization of natural management rights affected the resource conditions, and how have concerns of gender and social inclusion been incorporated in the process? c) How can the sustainability of efforts to improve the productive capacity of CPR systems be assessed in the context of current debate on the effects of climate change and initiative and implementation of new programs such as PES and REDD+? d) How can multiple methods of information gathering and analysis (by multiple methods, we mean both triangulation of methods to get the true picture as well as the combination of socioeconomic methods with the biological science through a combination of micro-macro analytic methods such as remotely sensed data overtime verified by ground-truthing and additional GPS sample point verification process) on CPRs be integrated in the national natural resource policy guidelines and the results used by local managers and users of CPRs, government agencies and scholars? e) What are the effective polycentric policy approaches for governance and management of CPRs that are environmentally sustainable and gender balanced? From the work presented at this meeting, we are planning at least two volumes of books and a special issue of International Journal of the Commons (IJC) as there are hardly any papers representing Asian Commons Problem in IJC. 2
