CONNECTIONS Volume 18, Number 1 June, 2018 New Opportunities That Benefit Everyone! It has been an exciting year! Many things have occurred in 2017-18, one being leadership transformation. 4CS took momentous approaches to assure leadership is transforming offering the California Community College Leadership Academy (3CLA), North, South, and Presidents retreats, and upholding collegial relationships with the Community College League of California and the Chancellor s Office. Past President, Debbie Weatherly envisioned Classified Professionals having more opportunities to take leadership creativity to a new horizon. 3CLA was that opportunity. The Academy was more than intensive leadership training; it motivated Classified Professionals to examine their college s infrastructure toward amplifying equitable services on their campus working in team dyads. The team included a Classified Professional as lead, a faculty member, and an administrator. Together they explored new opportunities that benefit everyone in the community college system. Congratulations to the 3CLA participants for a job well done! Many thanks to Deborah Knowles, 3CLA Director for coordinating a phenomenal academy and the Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative (IEPI) for funding this rewarding experience. The North, South, and Presidents retreats at San Joaquin Delta College, Long Beach City College, and Fresno City College respectively were an opportunity for Classified Professionals to network and share best practices from different perspectives. The discussions focused on new opportunities to refine best practices and boost specific aspects of Senate work. At the Presidents Retreat, Classified Professionals took advantage of expanding their insight into what s happening at the state level. State Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley provided updates on the new funding formula, online college, guided pathways, zero cost textbooks, and more. With much happening at the state level, 4CS is taking every chance possible to maintain a collegial relationship with state organizations. If you would like to serve on a state committee, please share your interest with your 4CS Area Representative. Currently, IEPI would like two additional Classified Professionals to serve on their advisory committee. Please share your interest with me or a member of the 4CS Board. Leadership transformation is ongoing. It is with gratification to witness the devotion of Classified Professionals. Participatory governance is a responsibility of honor. The hours that go into upholding leadership is admirable. The 4CS Board and I appreciate you. News From 4CS When the Stakes are High Shondra West, 4CS President The 4CS Classified Senate Presidents Retreat at Fresno City College (FCC), hosted by Suzi Nitzel, FCC Classified Senate President, and Ernie Garcia, North 4CS Vice President was exceptional. The day was full of engaging activities focused on building noble senates, tips for new presidents, Senate meeting training, and increasing participation and membership. Classified Senate Presidents discussed issues at a much deeper level. The conversations were ideal for new, seasoned, and veteran Presidents to express their role in leadership. I am reminded of a quote on leadership by Chris Hadfield, Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others' success, and then standing back and letting them shine. The highlight of the event was an appearance by State Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley. Chancellor Oakley took time to give updates on several state initiatives including guided pathways, the online college, the new funding formula and much more. He also candidly answered any and all questions the attendees posed. We hope the 4CS North, South, and Presidents retreats have brought about opportunities to reflect, refine practices, stimulate strategic thinking that can be carried back into your daily work. The main goal is to offer a venue where Senate leaders can interact with fellow Senate members to build a social foundation of meaning and purpose. Leadership is a choice you make, not a place you sit. Robert F. Tucker 4CS Connections June 2018 3

News From 4CS 4CS Board Visits the Inland Empire Chaffey College and the Chaffey College Classified Senate hosted the 4CS March board meeting March 16 17, 2018. The 4CS Board had the opportunity to break bread with the Chaffey College Classified Senate and several Chaffey administrators. The Chaffey College campus in Rancho Cucamonga offers breathtaking views of the nearby mountains. The Board extends its thanks to Dr. Henry Shannon and the Classified Senate for providing breakfast, lunch, snacks, and support throughout the two day meeting. Area Spotlight: A Journey Through Our Region Southeast 3 Area Representative Dawn Bridge Let s take a brief walk around Southeast 3 region. The region is comprised of 12 community colleges, six with Classified Senates, located in Riverside/San Bernardino Counties which is recognized as one of the fastest growing regions in the California Community College system. Southeast 3 is beautifully situated less than an hour from beaches, mountains, high and low deserts, and adjacent to Temecula Wine Country; very desirable for those seeking access to a variety of activities. Here are a few notable happenings and senate budget information within our region s Classified Senates. Chaffey College: The first and one of the most successful Classified Senates, Chaffey College continues to be a model for senates in the state. They demonstrate strong governance, leadership, and participation, and are an excellent example of collegial collaboration. Although they did experience a minor bump or two this quarter, they have quickly recovered and continue to be a senate by which all others can model - Budget: District/fundraising. College of the Desert: College of the Desert had a change in Senate leadership and is moving along at a steady pace and is active in college governance. We hope to see them increase their presence in the coming year Budget: unknown Crafton Hills College: Continued remarkable growth and increased classified presence within their college. Senate President Ben Gamboa took a position as an Associate Dean at Miramar College and the Vice President moved into a faculty role. What a wonderful example of professional development and growth for Classified Professionals - Budget: District augmentation/ fundraising Mount San Jacinto College: MSJC continues to actively participate in the governance structure, professional development, and establishing stronger Senate procedures. They are blessed to have strong support and respect from their college President and leadership - Budget: District augmented/fundraising. Norco College: This newly reactivated senate demonstrated that although there may be differences of opinions among Classified Professionals, they could still move towards a Senate structure and increase their presence and decision-making within the college. This was not an easy road for Norco College; however, perseverance and determination proved their ally in the end. A new college President has paved the way for a rebirth of the Senate and they now look to inspire sister colleges Riverside City and Moreno Valley, to form Classified Senates - Budget: None 4CS Connections June 2018 4

News From 4CS South Region Hosts Retreat Karen Jimenez, 4CS South Vice President Members of Classified Senates from 13 community colleges around Southern California met at Long Beach City College on January 25 for the Gathering of the Senates South to exchange ideas and get to know each other. A huge thank you to the Long Beach City College Classified Senate for working with Karen Jimenez, 4CS South Vice President, to organize an amazing day! Also a round of applause to Long Beach City College President, Dr. Reagan Romali, for her inspirational perspective on the participation of Classified Professionals in the governance process and Dr. Darla Cooper, Executive Director of The RP Group, for her excellent and informative presentation on Guided Pathways! The Vessel of Knowledge State Reports Sylvia Amito'elau Participates in FutureShop Design & Prototyping This workshop was led by Van Ton-Quinlivan, Executive Vice Chancellor of Workforce and Digital Futures for the California Community Colleges and held at the Institute for the Future (IFTF) in Palo Alto, California on April 4 and 5, 2018. The purpose of the workshop was to identify innovative designs for the development of Governor Jerry Brown s proposed Fully Online Community College. There were over 40 participants representing various groups that were involved in exploring potential online solutions and identified several core design principles for success such as ensuring that the college be affordable, flexible, connected with employers, personalized, easy on and off ramps, accessible, and competency-based. Sylvia is an Instructional Technologies Designer for the Faculty Success Center at Coastline Community College and was the only Classified professional at the event. She reported that, It was an invigorating experience to work with such creative and passionate people working towards a common goal, to help the economically and educationally stranded 2.5 million adults in the state of California. IEPI March Meeting: Highlights Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative (IEPI) Advisory Committee met in Sacramento on March 9 for its quarterly meeting. They discussed some of the major challenges that are on the horizon such as Guided Pathways. The committee discussed the new culture that it may bring and the challenges of a system wide program versus the unique necessities of local institutions. In order to address these challenges, the committee explored the ideas of IEPI being more nimble in order to support the needs of individual colleges. They also agreed that improved coordination between IEPI and Guided Pathways is required in order to identify and clearly communicate each group s role and responsibility in this project. During this meeting, the Professional Development Workgroup introduced the idea of creating an 18-month professional development calendar so constituents can be aware and plan for upcoming trainings and workshops. In addition, the next iteration of the online Professional Learning Network (PLN) is in the works. The current version has over 11,000 users in which fiscal training is the most popular course. PLN organizers are hoping to improve their communications in order to attract more users. Charter of the Common Course Management System (CCMS) The purpose of the Committee is to provide input, guidance, and feedback on the CCMS development activities to the vendor in support of the needs of platform users and stakeholders in the California Community Colleges (CCC), and to keep the OEI Advisory Committee (OEIAC) informed of the development recommendations to the vendor. On July 1, 2018, the Committee will be composed of voting representatives from a variety of statewide governance groups serving two-year terms and will include up to 10 members appointed by the California Community Colleges Classified Senate (4CS). There is a difference between listening and waiting for your turn to speak. Simon Sinek 4CS Connections June 2018 5

Senate News From Across the State South Orange County Colleges Come Together Craig Connor, Saddleback College On a rainy Thursday, March 22, one-hundred and sixty-nine Classified Professionals from Saddleback College, Irvine Valley College, and South Orange County Community College District Services came together for a full day retreat of team building exercises at the 2018 SOCCCD Classified Staff Development Day. This event is planned, organized, and staffed by an all-classified districtwide committee and classified volunteers. The annual event this year was held at the recently developed Orange County Great Park (in Irvine), inside the beautiful Hangar 244, a historical and era-iconic WWII airplane hangar built during the 1940s to house fighter aircraft at the Marine Cops Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, home of the Marine Corps aviation operations on the West Coast (the base operated from 1942 to 1999). During the first half of this all-day event, there were seminars and presentations offered on retirement planning, team building strategies and activities, and an amazing and inspirational speech and open dialog on life wellness from the keynote speaker Audra Wilford, founder of the MaxLove Project. After a catered lunch highlighting forty-five Classified Professionals service milestone and the awarding and recognition of three classified employees of the year (one from each college and District), the attendees enjoyed an aviation themed team building exercise Flugtag!, hosted by Feet First Entertainment. During this exercise, teams worked together to design and construct their very own aircraft which were then launched off a platform in fierce competition with other teams. The culmination of the day arrived with a fundraising raffle of over 90 locally donated gifts from the community resulting the event raising $1,500 to be donated to Support The Enlisted Project (STEP), a nonprofit organization which provides financial assistance for enlisted military families and recently discharged veterans in need. Professional Development: Moving Forward Awana Payne, San Diego City College This past year and a half, San Diego City College has seen a monumental growth in our Professional Development activities. With support and contribution from our new College President Ricky Shabazz, Ed.D. and the SDCC Professional Development Coordinators Sofia Laurein and Elva Salinas (past), the Classified Senate has developed an Institute for our Classified New Hires. Historically, new SDCC Classified Professionals were given a broad orientation at the District level, an orientation of department and immediate area, but a robust introduction to the larger campus support services was lacking. The Classified Senate and Professional Development Committee took to task developing a semester-long program delivering newly hired Classified Professionals orientations, workshops, and networking opportunities. We have launched two Institutes, Spring 17 & Fall 17, serving over 20 Classified Professionals. Our most recent institute attended a daylong kick-off, including welcomes from our campus administration team, information on participatory governance, and an overview of student support services. We continue these institutes throughout the semester, hosting workshops on topics from submitting travel requests, the evaluation process, professional development resources, and networking opportunities. The momentum is exciting, as we are growing our Classified Professional body to be more informed and active! No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. Upcoming Events The Community College League of California is proud to present the 2018 Annual Convention, the premier professional development event for California's community college leaders. This event brings together CEOs, trustees, faculty, Classified Professionals, administrators, and partners of the California Community College system to share tools, models, and solutions to system issues, as well as celebrate accomplishments.
