WELCOME TO IOWA STATE WELCOME! The purpose of orientation is to acclimate you to campus and Ames while simultaneously learning how to be successful at Iowa State. We will cover as much information as possible, and please, do not hesitate to ask questions. A note about punctuality: Please arrive on time to each event and plan to stay until the end. It s essential that you are on time to events and meetings. Especially in the U.S., late arrivals are considered impolite. If an event is called a drop in event, you can arrive at any time during the duration of the event. ALEKS Mathematics Placement Assesment What is it? All new students must complete the ALEKS placement assessment before their advising appointment. This test is Internet-based and adaptive. Allow one to two hours to complete. You may take this test in an ISU computer lab or any computer with reliable internet access by going to: https://math.iastate.edu/academics/undergraduate/aleks/

English Placement Test What is it? This test helps your advisor know which English course is best for you to enroll in. This is not the TOEFL and does not replace the TOEFL. This test is designed to help you get in the right English course your first semester to help you be successful at ISU. Visit https://apling.engl.iastate. edu/english-placement-test/ for more information. Location: Gerdin 1148. When: There are three opportunities to take this test, August 10th, 12th or 15th. You must be at the testing location by 8:30 a.m., and the test takes three hours to complete. Tuition Payments You can pay all at once or make monthly payments and you can pay with an American bank account or an international bank account. Visit AccessPlus to make your payment online. Your U-Bill must be paid on time to avoid additional charges. Please contact Accounts Receivable for clarification on when your bill is due at (515) 294-7388 : ubill@iastate. edu International First-Year Experience Seminar This course has been created to help provide timely information and support for new international undergraduate students in their first semester at Iowa State. Also, the information provided as part of this firstyear experience course will be more valuable to the students during their first semester. So, it is important to register for this course right away! Please note that this course is now required for all new international students. When meeting with your academic adviser, please ask them to help you register for U ST 110X section A, B or C alongside a recitation (your adviser will know what that is) sections 1-27.

Day by Day Schedule- *All Events on this Schedule are Mandatory unless noted. Monday - August 8th Students who arrive on the 8th will have the morning to get settled in Orientation Housing. Welcome Event Registration Starts at 1:00 p.m. Great Hall MU Meet the people who will help you throughout Orientation! Students will get an overview of the next two weeks, and hear from a few speakers. We will take a group photo to remember your first day on Campus! International Business Social 4:30 p.m. -8:00 p.m. The Alumni Center We will take you to the Alumni Center for this event. This is a great chance to meet with a variety of vendors from Ames. Get a cell-phone, start a bank account, and learn about businesses in Ames, all while enjoying food courtesy of the Iowa State University Alumni Association! Tuesday - August 9th Immigration Processing South Ballroom Starting in the morning, students will be brought in groups to take care of their Immigration Check-In. We will complete an electronic check-in form with each student, and students will submit their documents to be scanned. Campus Resources Presentation 2:00 p.m. Curtiss 0127 Come hear presentations from the Writing and Media Center, the Academic Success Center, and more! Document Handback 3:30 p.m. South Ballroom Collect the documents you left with us in the morning.

Wednesday - August 10th English Placement Test #1 Registration Starts at 8:30 a.m. Gerdin 1148 First opportunity to take the EPT. Immigration Information Session 1:30 p.m. -2:30 p.m. Great Hall (F-1 Visas), South Ballroom (J-1 Visas) Learn all the regulations necessary to maintain legal student-status. You will have a chance to ask an advisor from the ISSO questions that relate to your immigration status and how to avoid getting in trouble. Student Panel 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. 1st floor of Willow Hall Wondering what life is like for an international student at ISU? Here is an opportunity to ask a current student for yourself. This event is come and go as you please. Thursday - August 11th Orientation Housing Move-Out Willow Hall The ISSO will provide vans to help you get moved into the housing you contracted through the Department of Residence. Students will be grouped by where they are moving to. ISSO Meet and Greet 12:30 p.m. Central Campus by the Campanile (Weather Permitting) Come and spend some time with the Advisors and other staff who work hard to support our International Students. Weather permitting we will be outside, but in the event of rain we will update everyone with a back-up location. We will be serving refreshments! Friday - August 12th English Placement Test #2 Registration Starts at 8:30 a.m. Gerdin 1148 Second opportunity to take the EPT.

Weekend Excursions (August 13th and 14th Over the weekend our orientation staff will be leading several optional excursions. Options include exploring what Ames has to offer, a trip to Jordan Creek Mall in Des Moines, and an outdoor hiking trip to Ledges State Park. Some excursions will require a sign up and will have a limited number of spots. Sign-ups will be available starting August 8th. Ask a student leader for more details! Monday-August 15th English Placement Test #3 Registration Starts at 8:30 a.m. Gerdin 1148 Final opportunity to take the EPT. Student Safety and Finances Presentation 1:30 p.m. -3:30 p.m. Meet in the Great Hall Presenters will include Officer Greiter from the ISU Police Department, Crystal Johnson from Accounts Receivable, and Rececca Hodnefield from US Bank. Tuesday-August 16th What You Need to Know Session and College Meetings 10:00 a.m. 2055 Hoover Hall Tim Tesar from International Admissions will be presenting on a lot of essential topics. After this you will be taken to your College Meeting, where you will receive an academic advising appointment to make your first class schedule! It is very important to be ON TIME for this session. Relationships in the U.S. 6:00 p.m. Great Hall The ISSO is proud to partner with the Dean of Students Office to present this session on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention. Trained staff will be on hand to lead the discussion on what these crimes mean in the United States, who perpetrates them, and what we can do to prevent them. This will include both a larger presentation and small group discussion.

Wednesday - August 17th Counseling Services and Sarcasm 101 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Carver 101 Counseling services will present on counseling resources available on campus and talk about culture shock. Learn about parts of U.S. culture that manifest in language from a Linguist! Sponsored Student Session 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Curtiss 0127 Students who are sponsored by their home government to attend ISU will meet with an advisor to discuss specific details for their situation. Driving and Bicycle Safety Starting at 2:30 p.m. Central Campus Learn about driving in the U.S. and biking in Ames! This event is optional.

Thursday - August 18th Immigration Information Session #2 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Carver 101 (F-1), Carver 196 (J-1) Second opportunity to learn about Immigration Regulations. Destination Iowa State Begins 5:00 p.m. Scheman Building The next step of your adventure begins. Join all the other new students coming to ISU in a multi-day celebration, with food, fun and a whole heap of Cyclone Pride! Other Requirements Health Screenings Check e-mail for appointment time Thielen Student Health Center Health screenings are required by the government and are a required part of orientation. You should have received a health screening time in your e-mail before arriving to Welcome Day. If you have not received an e-mail with your health screening time please contact isorient@iastate.edu. Once you have your health screening appointment time write it on the line below so that you can keep track of your appointment. ISU ID Card Beardshear Hall Students will be brought in groups to the Card Office beginning August 3rd. If you arrive between August 6th and 8th, you should expect to get your card on August 8th or 9th. You will need your passport and your Student ID number to have your card made.

Social Events *All Social Events are optional, but highly recommended. Wednesday - August 10th Board Game and Movie Night 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Carver Hall First Floor Lobby Come and play a variety of board games and meet new people. We will also have a movie playing in Carver 101. Friday - August 12th Recreation Services Night 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. State Gym Come and get a tour of the workout and recreation facilities, learn how to check out equipment, and stay for basketball and badminton! Monday - August 15th CyBowl and Billiards 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. CyBowl in the MU Play a few games of bowling, pool or table tennis, and ISSO will pick up the tab, our treat! Wednesday - August 17th Craft Night at the Workspace 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. MU Come and express yourself at this open-house style event, and make an art project to decorate your new residence hall or apartment! Supplies provided by our campus partners. Other Social Events We will be offering a wide variety of informal social events throughout orientation. Special offerings like yoga and Zumba classes will provide plenty of variety. Stay tuned for updates, and we hope to see you there!
