M u s i c T e a c h e r s A s s o c i a t i o n o f C a l i f o r n i a - L o s A n g e l e s B r a n c h Mar Apr 2015 FORTE From the President Editor: Annie Chen Dear Teachers, I want to thank ALL of you for your support shown over the past three weekends, especially to some of you who have gone beyond your call of duty to assist the branch. After three weekends of branch CM Evaluations, I am so relieved and happy for the entire branch. Our overall performance was at an all time high with a rather low percentage of RALs, thanks to all teachers that did pulled out their students IF they truly can NOT meet the minimum requirement set by the MTAC, esp. in the PIANO dept., including my own students :-(. I noticed that evaluators in all the 4 disciplines follow quite closely to the RAL guidelines set by the state. While the strings have not completed their theory grading yet, hopefully by today, the following is the breakdown of our RALs: PIANO: 13 (Performance) and 21 ( Theory ) STRINGS: 2 ( Performance ) and so far only 1 ( Theory ) WINDS: 1 ( Performance ) VOICE: Congratulations with NO RALs. The dates and deadlines for the BH recitals are listed under the Calendar of Events. Please check the deadlines accordingly, and send in your applications to the appropriate chairs. We have three more branch events coming up after this CM season ends. They are the Bach Festival, Sonata/Sonatina Festival and our annual Branch Scholarship Competition to be held in May. Our highlight for this year will be the MTAC L.A. Branch first ever Concerto Competition donated by the Trust of one of our late member Michiko Dohzen. Again, if you have any suggestions for the 2015-2016 musical year, please share with me in order for me to bring it up at our final board meeting. Rosemary Yang President/CM Chair MTAC L.A. 2015 Los Angeles Branch Junior Bach Festival Saturday, April 11, 2015 [Keyboard- Branch Level] General Rules: The Festival is open to students (ages 19 and under) of active, provisional or student members of the MTAC Los Angeles Branch. This includes active members who are contributors to the Los Angeles branch. Student must have studied with their current teacher at least 6 months, unless by consent of the former teacher. Students may play any original or transcriptions of J.S. Bach s music, or music of other Baroque composers within the 5 minute time limit. However, to be eligible to be considered to be chosen to play at the Regional Festival (2 nd round), the following exceptions must be upheld: (1) No music from the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook, ANH 113-132 (2) No transcriptions other than those made by J. S. Bach himself from his own works. (3) No works by other Baroque composers. Music need not be limited to the Complete Works Audition Official List of Bach's works in order to be eligible for the Regional Festival. Music from the current Official List is required only at the Complete Works Audition (CWA) [3 rd round]. To be eligible for the CWA, students with works from the Complete Works List for the current year (2015) must be a winner at the Regional Festival. Students must perform the same music as played in Branch and Regional for Complete Works Audition, but now complete as shown on the Official List. For example, a student may play an Invention (or Sinfonia) in the Branch and Regional level, but must play both Invention and Sinfonia in the CWA, if he/she reaches that level. For the Official List of works for CWA, go to http://www.scjbf.org/cwa.htm. [link] Music must be performed by memory. Students do not need to provide music books to the judges. The Branch chair will contact teachers if he/she has a student winner. In the Branch level, Judges will select at least 35% of eligible students to play in the Regional Festival in May. Branch winners must perform exactly the same music for the Regional level. In the event a branch winner is unable to compete in the Regional level, an Alternate winner may be selected to take his/her place. In the Regional level, judges will select 45% to be eligible to participate in the Complete Works Audition in the Fall (early October). Branch performers will receive a trophy for their participation. After the judges selections, branch winners (the selected 35%) will receive rosettes; alternates and honorable mentions will receive award certificates or ribbons.
