United States Power Squadrons Come for the Boating Education...Stay for the Friends SM OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF NEW ORLEANS POWER SQUADRON volume lxxix february 2018 NUMBER 1 Planning for 2018 by Cdr William "Mike" Turner, AP It is an honor to have been nominated and elected by the Membership of the New Orleans Power Squadron as Commander for 2018. I am humbled by the faith the Squadron placed in me to fill this billet. No one gets to such a position without a lot of help along the way. I want to thank the 2017 Bridge for their support and thank the incoming 2018 Bridge, as I look forward to working with them to make 2018 a great year for us. If you weren t able to make the 2018 Change of Watch, it was another fun and entertaining event. P/C Eddie Brazeal served as Master of Ceremonies and ably filled those shoes, previously held by P/C Buddy Ward. I even thought his jokes were entertaining. In addition, I would like to offer some special thank yous to several members who were exceptional in helping me with the transition to Commander. Dan Ross, Eddie Brazeal and Pete Ingrassia all went above and beyond to make my transition as smooth as possible. I am sincerely thankful for their support and look forward to working with them in 2018. I would like to offer a short view of the way ahead for 2018. There are three areas I would like to see us work on in 2018 1) I would like to see more events involving our new and spectacular floating dock. Our 2017 Planning Committee did an outstanding job in planning and executing the construction of the dock. A simple event to put on would be a Grill your Own. We could establish a regular time to hold this event and members could meet, grill your own meat of choice and imbibe in your favorite beverage while hanging out and enjoying our dock facility. If you have any ideas for other activities, please let the Bridge know. 2) I would like to work towards financial solvency, meaning that we at least break even for the year. We raise a lot of money through our own events however this money is coming from members of the squadron. I would like to hear ideas on how we could fundraise external to the squadron and help offset costs of some of our events or activities. 3) Finally, no Bridge can have a successful year on its own. It s only through the participation of the membership with our organization and at our events that will lead to a successful year. If you haven t been to a General Membership Meeting or one of our events in a while, please come out and visit with us. We d love to catch up with you. Flotsam and Jetsam Proposed 2017 Bylaw change regarding the size of the elected Nominating Committee was passed at the December meeting. Article 5, Sect. 5.5 There shall be a Nominating Committee, consisting of a chairman and two other members. One member shall be elected for 1 year and will be the Chairman. A second member shall be elected for 2 years. A third member shall be elected for 3 years. Each year they shall rotate up with the 1-year member elected to be the new chairman. Each year thereafter one member shall be elected to the nominating committee by the members qualified to vote and present at the annual meeting for a term of 3 years. Members are: Chris Lawler, AP Don Ellis, SN-CN Eddie Brazeal, AP Boat Show 2-3-4 March from Don Ellis - Cdr Mike has requested I get our Boat Show notice out to the members of NOPS quickly. We have about 6-weeks to prepare for our annual presence in the Dome amidst all the boat stuff. This is a fun show -- Our big draw to fill our ABC3 boating course class for March. You need to think about which shift (times) you and your fellow NOPS friends wish to attend. The "blank" sign-up sheet was going to be passed around at the January Membership Meeting, which was cancelled because of the freezing weather. As usual it is a 3-day event, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: 2-shifts on Friday, 4 on Saturday, and 2 on Sunday. We will be in booth #95-same as last year - good location near the entrance. Please note that the LANOPS Day-at-the-Races event has shifted to Sunday, 4 March. So, we will need some non-race folks to handle the booth until reinforcements (of which I will be one) can arrive at the end to help break-down and move the booth stuff out. Of course we will need some help in setting it up in the first place on the Thursday before the Show starts - don't everyone volunteer at once. Much appreciated, Don donellis-bay@cox.net Safety Committee to Promote America s Boating Club - The Decal Awareness Program received a grant from the United States Power Squadrons Board of Directors to purchase 35,000 vessel examiner business cards and ship them to all examiners. This card serves as a segue for promoting America s Boating Club. Please expect your cards to arrive late January. Also, the 2018 vessel safety check decals have been mailed to squadron commanders and should arrive soon if they haven't already. We are looking forward to a great year for the Vessel Safety Check Program. America s Boating Club Marketing Guidebook - As promised (and very much requested), the America s Boating Club Marketing Guidebook is now available. With a tremendous amount of enthusiasm about the America s Boating Club branding strategy, many squadrons and districts are eager to move forward. This comprehensive guidebook contains information on how to improve marketing and promotion at the squadron, district, and national levels. It is our gateway to help rethink how we present ourselves to the boating public and includes links to new logos and branding specifications, updated brochures and promotional materials, a training session for a successful booth at boat shows, suggestions and ideas for marketing and public relations, and other marketing tools. Use this guidebook to help you promote membership and education in USPS: We are America s Boating Club. 10 D/15 SPRING CONFERENCE 6-8 APRIL 2018 MOBILE SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON The Spring Conference 2018 will be held at the Hampton Inn, 29451 U.S. Hwy 98, Daphne, Alabama 36526. The hotel offers free breakfast every morning for all hotel guests along with free parking and free WIFI. Our block of rooms will be held until 12 March and, after that, it will be as available. Friday evening will be at the Hampton with a barbecue dinner (BYOB we will furnish wine and setups.) There will be a presentation that will describe the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. Historian and author John Laurence Busch will attempt to re-calibrate your mind before showing why the proposition of making the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean on a steamship was met with a mixture of skepticism and fear. He then will show how Captain Moses Rogers addressed that skepticism and fear, by designing and building the first example of globalized high technology in history. The presentation is based upon his book, STEAM COFFIN: Captain Moses Rogers and The Steamship Savannah Break the Barrier. On Saturday, after the business meeting (local apparent noon), the Mobile Squadron will host the Loyal Association of the Navigators (all Ns and JNs welcome), after which there will be a box lunch at the Hampton. For Saturday evening, P/C Larry Lartigue has reserved the Gulf Quest National Maritime Museum. Come dressed for dinner and tour the museum beginning at 1600 (4pm) in a group or come any time after 1500 self guided. (The admission is included in your dinner reservation.)
