Scholarships to be presented at the annual banquet following the 2011/2012 season. As of this date, there are nine (9) scholarships available to eligible CRAA players as follows: Stu Peppard Memorial Scholarship (1), Jeff Niehaus Scholarship (1), Dale Dupont Scholarship (2), Terry Spink Scholarship (1), Kyle Blais Scholarship(1), Jody Bryan Scholarship (1), Ed Melville Scholarship (1), and Royals Team Scholarship (1). These Scholarships are applicable towards any full or part time post secondary education at a University, college, or educational institute. Please carefully review the attached material to determine the eligibility requirements. APPLICANT RESUME Provide a cover letter outlining the reasons why you should be considered for a C.R.A.A. Scholarship Award, based on the following guidelines: 1. Community, hockey, school, sports involvement and other volunteer activities providing examples of your good character, leadership and sportsmanship qualities. Include awards, honors, positions and responsibilities held. 2. Document your hockey experience, including hockey association(s), level played, refereeing experience (if any), coaches, awards and achievements. 3. Transcript of your academic records in High School (grades 10, 11, and 12) and Post Secondary Educational Institutions (if any). Please list any awards and honors you may have received. Reference letters are required from the following: 1. High School or Post Secondary Institution confirming your character and scholastic abilities. 2. C.R.A.A. Coach regarding your hockey, sportsmanship, leadership qualities and character. 3. Any person or community liaison of applicant s choice that can provide confirmation of your character and/or community involvement. CALGARY ROYALS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2011 Stu Peppard Memorial Scholarship Dale Dupont Scholarship Program Kyle Blais Scholarship Royals Teams Scholarship Jeff Niehaus Scholarship Terry Spink Scholarship Jody Bryan Scholarship Ed Melville Scholarship PURPOSE The purpose of the C.R.A.A. Scholarship Program is to provide C.R.A.A. players who are of good character, have demonstrated hockey ability and who qualify academically, with financial assistance to further their education at a recognized Post Secondary Education Institution. ELIGIBILITY Players registered with a C.R.A.A. team in the current year and who have previously participated as a player for a minimum of two years with C.R.A.A., are continuing their education into a Post Secondary Institution, or, are presently full time or part time attendance at a recognized Post Secondary Institution, are eligible to apply for a Players who have participated for a minimum of three years with C.R.A.A., but are not registered with C.R.A.A. in the current year are also eligible for a Scholarship if such application is made no later than one year following the last year registered with the Calgary Royals Athletic Association. C.R.A.A. Scholarships may be held concurrently with other scholarships. * No individual is eligible for more than one C.R.A.A. AWARD The value of the Scholarships is determined yearly by C.R.A.A. and will be announced separately. The full amount of the award will be paid to the individual on or after September 1, upon providing confirmation of full time registration at a Post Secondary Institution. Upon request the Scholarship may be used to reimburse only the direct tuition costs whilst attending in a part time capacity. The Scholarship award must be activated within the academic year following the date of the award, although, the award may be delayed up to two (2) years with the approval of the Board of Trustees. STU PEPPARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Stu Peppard Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of Stu Peppard (Mr. Hockey), whose contributions to Minor Hockey in Calgary were exemplary. He valued sportsmanship, good character and commitment to the sport of hockey. Applicants receiving the Stu Peppard 4
_ Memorial Scholarship shall be considered to have outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, and scholastic qualities with a strong commitment to the sport of hockey. JEFF NIEHAUS SCHOLARSHIP The Jeff Niehaus Scholarship is in memory of Jeff Niehaus who passed away tragically on June 11, 1996 at the age of 18 years. Jeff was a Character Hockey Player, worked hard and was a Total Team Player. He had lots of energy and always brought that energy to the rink. His love of life was on display at the arena, you would always find him smiling, laughing and joking around with teammates and coaches. He had a desire to compete and improve, as evident by his Most Improved Player award for the 1995/1996 season. Jeff was a joy to be around and from a coach s standpoint, Jeff brought everything a coach desires to the arena: a desire to improve, a great work ethic and a winning attitude, with the team being looked at as the number one priority over individual statistics. DALE DUPONT SCHOLARSHIPS These Scholarships are named in honor of Dale Dupont, son of Lola Dupont and the late Emile Dupont. Dale exemplified the characteristics that the Calgary Royals Athletic Association expounds; sportsmanship and education. Dale continued to participate as a player, a coach, and a student after his playing days for C.R.A.A. were over. Dale passed away on February 12, 1975 at the age of 22 years. TERRY SPINK SCHOLARSHIP The Terry Spink Scholarship is named in memory of Terry Spink who passed away on November 21, 1991 at the age of 18 years. Terry played five years of AA and AAA Hockey with S.W.A.A. and was awarded two scholarships. Terry was an outstanding student who graduated from Western Canada High School in 1990, were he was an honors student in his second year of studies at the University of Calgary. Terry exemplified the characteristics of sportsmanship, leadership and education encouraged by C.R.A.A. JODY BRYAN SCHOLARSHIP The Jody Bryan Scholarship is named in memory of Jody Bryan who passed away suddenly on October 18, 2010 at the age of 54 years. Jody coached the Junior B Gold team in the Calgary Royals program for three successful seasons; being a gifted and passionate coach who loved hockey and the fun it brought to the player s that he coached lives. Jody coached 10+ years in the Minor Hockey Calgary system and he was a coach who cared passionately both about the game of hockey and about his players. He put his heart and soul into his teams. The Calgary Royals feel very privileged to have had Jody as one of their coaches. He will be missed by everyone; however, his spirit lives on within the walls of the Stu Peppard hockey arena. ROYALS TEAM SCHOLARSHIP At the end of the season, C.R.A.A. teams are required to close their bank accounts, leaving excess, unused funds. Over the past years most of the teams have chosen to donate these funds to the Royals Team Scholarship Fund. The Royals Team Scholarship recognizes these 5
donations and a Scholarship is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership and team play during the hockey season. KYLE BLAIS SCHOLARSHIP Kyle played for CRAA from 1998 2003. He always played on a GOLD team. He played on two teams that went on to play at the provincials. Kyle was extremely and absolutely dedicated to hockey and had the ability to pull his team together. He was a leader in the dressing room. He was a committed goaltender who never stopped wanting to improve. Sadly, Kyle was killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver on November 28, 2005 he was 22 years old. ED MELVILLE SCHOLARSHIP Ed Melville passed away October 18, 2007 at the age of 74 years. Working quietly in the background, Ed Melville contributed countless hours to benefit CRAA players. Ed became a member of CRAA in 1995 and Honorary Life Member in 1983. His goal was always to ensure that any boy who wanted to play hockey had the opportunity to do so. Ed worked tirelessly to raise money through many different fund raisers. He was always adamant that the money was to be used for the players. A recipient of a hockey scholarship, Ed always said that this changed his life! BOARD OF TRUSTEES The Board of Trustees will consist of the following: Not less than (3) three members of the C.R.A.A. Board of Directors, inclusive of the Scholarship Director and Vice President of Administration, or designate. Two other persons, appointed by the Board of Directors. A Niehaus Family representative or designate Honorary Member for the Jeff Niehaus A Blais Family representative or designate Honorary Member for the Kyle Blais A Bryan Family representative or designate Honorary Member for the Jody Bryan A Melville Family representative or designate Honorary Member for the Ed Melville The Trustees should not be related to any of the Scholarship applicants. 6
APPLICATION SUBMISSION AND DEADLINE The specific deadline and address for submission of applications will be announced yearly by C.R.A.A. The Scholarship awards will be presented at the Annual C.R.A.A. Awards Banquet. SELECTION FOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Scholarships will be awarded to those candidates judged most deserving by the Trustees of the Scholarship Program. The chosen candidates of the Trustees will be ratified by the Board of Directors of C.R.A.A. In determining which candidates are most deserving, the Trustee will give full consideration to the following factors: 1. Applicant s character, leadership qualities and sportsmanship; 2. Applicant s proficiency in hockey; 3. Applicant s scholastic standing. A scholarship application form must be completed fully and forwarded to the Scholarship Board of Trustees for consideration.
