Jasmine Jiangsu Tertiary Education Scholarship for Southeast Asia 2018 (JJTES-SEA)

Background O ne of SEAMEO s flagship projects is the priorities of the New Education Agenda agreed during the SEAMEO Ministerial Meeting in September 2014. The outcome from the Meeting was the distillation of seven Priority Areas of SEAMEO on Education to be promoted for the next twenty years (2015-2035). The Priority Areas comprise of 1) Early Childhood Care and Education, 2) Addressing Barriers to Inclusion, 3) Resiliency in the Face of Emergencies 4) Promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), 5) Revitalising Teacher Education, 6) Promoting Harmonisation in Higher Education and Research, and 7) Adopting a 21 st Century Curriculum. At the Ministerial Round Table Meeting at the 48 th SEAMEO Council Conference in Pattaya, Thailand, the Ministers of Education in Southeast Asian Region supported the implementation of SEAMEO Seven Priority Areas at the national, regional level and beyond. In this connection, SEAMEO Secretariat has been exploring collaboration with countries beyond the Southeast Asian Region including the People s Republic of China. Through linkages made possible by the ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education (JPDE) has proposed several collaborative activities to the SEAMEO Secretariat. One is the provision of Jasmine Jiangsu Tertiary Education Scholarship for Southeast Asia (JJTES-SEA) for 2016, 2017, and 2018 academic year. This scholarship programme relates to Priority No 6. It will benefit around 87 post-secondary school students (Grade 12 or equivalent) with excellent academic records from Southeast Asia. They will have a chance of pursuing tertiary education in prominent and acclaimed institutions of higher education in Jiangsu Province, People s Republic of China. In 2016, there were 71 scholarship recipients from 8 Southeast Asian countries. In 2017, the number increases to 73 students from 10 Southeast Asian countries. More details are in Annex I. Further information about Jiangsu Education can be retrieved from the website http://english.jsjyt.gov.cn /statisticscharts.html Scholarship Details I n 2018, 87 students from Southeast Asia will commence their studies in tertiary level institutions in Jiangsu Province, People s Republic of China, with support from JPDE. The scholarships to be offered are divided into two types: 1 2 PARTIAL Details of education levels provided in Jiangsu Province is in Annex III. 2

Full Scholarship Financial Support Full scholarship will be given all through the duration of the studies at the Scholarship Recipients Institutions subject to annual reviews. It includes financial support as follows: 1. Waiver of tuition and fees including registration, laboratory experiments, internship, and basic textbooks required within the programme curriculum*. 2. Free on-campus dormitory accommodation, or accommodation allowance of up to CNY10,000 per year*. 3. Living allowance of up to CNY1,500 per month*. Recipients registering on or before the 15 th of the registration month will be granted the full living allowance of that month. Recipients registering after that will only receive half of the living allowance for that month. 4. Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students while in China. *Subject to each institution s tuition fees and charges. Details will be informed by each institution during admission. Jasmine Jiangsu Tertiary Education Scholarship for Southeast Asia does not cover: 1. Cost of experiments or internships beyond the programme curricula, books or learning materials other than the required basic textbooks. 2. Travel expenses and other related expenses such as visa application fees. Field of Specialisations Full scholarships are available for studies in various specialisations. Here are the categories: 1 2 3 ARTS: UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL SCIENCE: UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL VOCATIONAL: TERTIARY LEVEL Includes studies in areas of Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, and Management. Number of Arts scholarships offered: 11 Includes studies in areas of Natural Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Science. Number of Science scholarships offered: 11 Includes post-high school 3-year certificate programmes. Number of vocational tertiary level scholarships offered: 22 3

Partial Scholarship Financial Support P artial scholarships are available for one academic year, specifically for Scholarship Recipients in the first year of studies. The amount and form of financial support for partial scholarships vary according to individual Institution s fees and charges. Field of Specialisations Partial scholarships are available for studies in various specialisations. Here are the categories: 1 2 UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL Includes Arts studies in areas of Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, and Management, AND Science in Natural Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Science. 22 scholarships are on offer. VOCATIONAL TERTIARY LEVEL Includes post-high school 3-year certificate programmes. 21 scholarships are on offer. 4

Eligibility A pplicants for both the Scholarships should fulfil the following general requirements: 1 Nationals of a Southeast Asian Country with non-chinese citizenship. 4 Possess good health, based on the standards for visa application process. 2 Under 30 years of age. 5 Agree to obey relevant laws of the People s Republic of China and meet the admission requirements of the host universities or colleges. 3 Attained senior high school diploma with good academic performance. For applicants applying for Science degrees, they must have scored at least 80% in Mathematics. 6 Must not be recipients of other scholarships offered by Chinese government, local governments or other organisations simultaneously. 7 Possess English or Chinese language proficiency. Students choosing courses in Chinese need to provide HSK4 (or above) certificate. Online interview will be done to examine Chinese proficiency. Students who choose courses in English need to be able to communicate fluently in English. 6

Selection Procedure A pplication will be opened until 31 May 2018. Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange (JESIE) will select the application of Southeast Asian Students to be under the JJTES-SEA and announce the successful candidates by June 2018. Here are some important dates: February - May 2018 1. Students and parents explore the programmes provided by the 30 participating institutions via the website(www.studyinjiangsu.org). 2. Students and parents examine the accreditation of the institutions in their own country. 3. Students and parents select threee most appropriate programmes and institutions. 4. Students apply for the school and scholarship online following the Application Procedure. April and June 2018 Announcement of scholarship recipients. (Two rounds) July 2018 Scholarship recipient preparation: Confirmation with the university, visa application, travel arrangements Required Documents 1 Scanned copy of the passport photo page. 4 Scanned copy of your emergency contact details (can be a passport, license, or other official ID) 2 3 Certified copies of highest academic certificate. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must have certified translations in Chinese or English. Certified copies of academic transcripts. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese 5 6 Scanned copy of HSK certificate/ TOEFL/IELTS (if any) Other relevant documents. or English must have certified translations in Chinese or English. 7 Note: Submitted documents are not returnable regardless of the result of application.

Application Procedure I nterested applicants are advised to undertake the following steps for application of the Jasmine Jiangsu Tertiary Education Scholarship for Southeast Asia: Note: The students should click the Educational Cooperation and Exchange with Southeast Asian Nations with purple color on the front page of the Study in Jiangsu website, and then click the Jasmine Jiangsu ASEAN Scholarship with orange color to submit the application. The application period for 2018 will be from 1 February to 31 May 2018. IMPORTANT: To verify and validate application, applicants must fill in Reference Code in Item 10 to be eligible for selection process. It can be obtained through http://www.bit.ly/jasminejiangsu2018. Because of the Jasmine Jiangsu Government scholarship, I can begin to learn and live in YPI without any worries.
