Par<cipatory sensing Open technology Air quality hackair introduction webinar 27 April 2016, 15:00-15:45 CET Christodoulos Kera<dis, DRAXIS Wiebke Herding, ON:SUBJECT This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 Arne Fellermann, BUND 1
hackair Collec<ve awareness pladorm for outdoor air pollu<on Christodoulos Kera<dis hackair project coordinator, DRAXIS ENVIRONMENTAL S.A. This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363
Why hackair? Air pollu<on from Par<culate MaTer (PM) has serious health and lifespan implica<ons BUT Ci<zens cannot easily assess their exposure to air pollu<on and be informed about air quality levels: official sensors are o]en few and far between; coverage is poor outside ci<es; data is not always easily accessible. This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 2
Objectives Create and test an open pladorm that will enable ci<zens and organisa<ons to easily engage in genera<ng and publishing informa<on relevant to outdoor air pollu<on: collect air quality data from diverse sources; synthesise data, and generate meaningful informa<on for ci<zens; deliver services through mobile and web applica<ons; increase user engagement and encourage behaviour change; test the concept with ci<zen communi<es. This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 3
How does it work? This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 4
Data sources Provided by the ci1zens themselves Pictures of the sky taken and uploaded by ci<zens through mobile app Measurements from low cost open hardware devices assembled by ci<zens Publicly available Images in social media depic<ng the sky. Measurements from exis<ng air quality sta<ons & open data. This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 5
Technology Image crawling: collec<on of geotagged sky-depic<ng images from publicly accessible sources Image analysis: es<ma<on of concentra<on of PM through digital images using established models Open hardware: Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) based sensors implemented from easy to find and use home equipment (e.g. filter and air pumps) combined with smartphone computer vision algorithms Discovery and indexing of environmental websites with air quality measurements Data fusion: crea<on of air quality maps for an en<re region based on single observa<ons from mul<ple sources Decision support and personalisa1on: Ontological framework and knowledge base This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 6
Services Air quality es1ma1ons based on various sources. Personalised recommenda1ons to ci<zens based on loca<on, travel, physical ac<vity and other informa<on. Measurements available as open data for other applica<ons. The hackair pladorm source code provided as open source. This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 7
Pilot operation Tes<ng by communi<es of ci<zens in order to validate the service pladorm: Germany Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND), environmental NGO (over 550,000 members and supporters) Norway Asthma and Allergies Associa<on of Norway is a charity organiza<on for people with asthma, allergies and other types of hypersensi<vity. (~17,000 members) Community developed by CITI-SENSE project (Ci<zen Observatory on air quality) This project has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innova<on programme under grant agreement No 688363 8
