(2) PUBLIC POLICY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE PROGRAMME APPLICATION IN PROGRESS A new DAAD programme is designed to academically qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them for their professional life. The programme offers outstanding graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) the chance to obtain a Master s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically devised economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. By this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions. Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries are encouraged to apply. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals. The successful candidates will pursue one of the selected Master courses focusing on Public Policy, Good Governance, International Relations, Public Ma n- agement, Administration, or Civil Society. The courses are internationally oriented and are taught in German and / or English. All scholarship holders will participate 4 to 6 months in German language courses before taking up their Master studies. (7) INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ECOSYSTEM, VALLEY VIEW UNIVERSITY, JULY 20 TH 23 RD 2009. A four day-symposium scheduled for July 20 th - 23 rd 2009 would be organised under the auspices of Valley View University (VVU) in collaboration with the German Ministry of Education and Research. This would be a call for a rethinking of how nations, institutions and individuals could evolve sustainable ecological friendly ways of dealing with the challenges of climate change, population growth, expansion of urban slums and rural migration. Under the theme; Harmonious Ecosystem for a Bright future - Success Pathways to Sustainability in Africa, the event is a joint research and development programme dubbed: ecological development of VVU which ends in 2009. The symposium will therefore showcase the final experiences and result of the project; and serve as a platform for dialogue for the establishment of sustainable solutions elsewhere. Dr Daniel Opoku Boateng, Vice President for Students Life and Services, VVU said the institution and its German partners were convinced that by sharing their know-how and collective wisdom, we will create visions and ways of replicating the successful story of VVU s attempt at creating a better world where human can co-exist for the mutual benefit of all. He noted that an imbalanced ecosystem, often arising out of human activities result in polluted air and water bodies, floods, diseases, wastes, degradation of the environment among other things. The symposium, he said, would also serve as an opportunity for the out-dooring of VVU s rain water storage, tree planting and Baobab Centre for eco studies, another project being funded under climate Change initiative of German government. Dr. Opoku Boateng noted that VVU s educational philosophy is to train students to acquire the sensibility and appreciation for the conservation of nature and humans. As part of the Ecological Master Plan, recycling and reuse of waste water, urine and organics as fertilizer and soil conditioner on farmlands and biogas for energy being implemented at VVU were testimonies to what the university had achieved so far, he added.
