BRAE NEWS & EVENTS GET TO KNOW PHILIPPE NAPAA Philippe Napaa is a senior from Palo Alto, CA. He came from a residential construction and landscape background so he was a civil engineering major. However, he quickly found out that it wasn t for him. He switched to BRAE where there are more hands on labs instead of theoretical classes. After graduation, Philippe hopes to move back to the Palo Alto area to work on mechanical equipment design and engineering. Most specifically, he wants to specify in mobile hydraulics and fluid power system design. Philippe has made sure to stay busy during his years at Cal Poly. He is the senior shop technician and maintenance supervisor for the mechanical engineering department. He also helps with quarterscale on an occasional basis. Philippe is a quartermaster sea scout and has sailed cross the Pacific Ocean going from Hawaii to San Francisco. This summer he rebuilt a 7.3 L diesel engine for a 1994 F350 pickup truck with his younger brother. He also is very involved with the Cal Poly Rose Float. I have been in charge of all the mechanical systems and infrastructure that makes the float drive down the parade route, as well as the animatronics, Philippe said. His favorite class that he s taken in the department was 302-Servo Hydraulics with Mike Burlingame. Having worked with hydraulics previously, I was glad to learn how to control motors and cylinders with Danfoss Plus +1 and Guide. It was also my first experience programming and working with an industry standard control system, so I was really glad to have the opportunity to do so. Since it was Burlingame s first time teaching the class, he put lots of hours in on his own time making the labs and the lecture plans, as well as helping students understand the material. Both he and the students learned a lot that quarter, Philippe said. One of Philippe s funniest moments happened at the BRAE banquet at the end of last year. Dr. Howe presented some students, including Philippe with scholarships. He talked about how the others worked for the ITRC and such. When it came my turn, he was like Philippe.he works hard but..he s just around His comment got a good round of laughs from the audience, Philippe said. Gary Weisenberger is one of Philippe s favorite people in the department. He appreciates that he is always going out of his way to help the students. Also, of course he likes the advice of funny stories that Gary always shares. Philippe s Advice Get involved in an extracurricular! Join one of the great clubs in the BRAE department, or at the very least go to the AES meetings each month. Get to know the faculty and staff! They are very friendly people who enjoy helping students and will go out of their way to help you if you need it. Spend some time down in labs 6 and 7. Even if your not involved with a club or team, go work on a project and get familiar with the tools and equipment there. The BRAE department is very fortunate to have such well equipped labs so use them! Life isn t all about school and studying, try something new and get involved! 2
