11 Intel Problem Statement: Next generation device miniaturisation The increase in computing power has been achieved by decreasing the size and increasing the number of transistor devices on the chip. Trinity supports INTEL in the development of new materials, new process methods to enable such miniaturization and new devices. Research partnership for 8 years. 100% funding of five projects in the last 18 months ~ 0.75M. Intel has increased R-in-R numbers to 6. 25 Trinity researchers hired by Intel in period 2011-2013. Novel materials for semiconductors. 11
12 Western Digital Problem Statement: Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) Development of near field transducers to facilitate the development of a new magnetic recording head. Initial small scale development programme has turned into a larger scale collaborative research programme company tripling their initial cash investment.
13 DePuy Problem Statement: Active hydroxyapatite coating Enable DePuy to deposit HA and analyse polymer drug coatings on site in Cork and stop using external vendors. Cork now the HA manufacturing site for DePuy attracting additional products for manufacturing in Ireland. DePuy created 50 new manufacturing jobs and the potential for an increased R&D presence to execute the projects of around 30 people. Innovation centre at DePuy a model for MNE companies 13
14 Sigmoid Pharma Problem Statement: Formulation to enable targeted delivery 1. Sigmoid Pharma have developed an oral drug delivery using their proprietary Liquid emulsion drug delivery system (LEDDS). Sigmoid require advanced characterisation methods to understand their novel manufacturing process to enable the development of stable, reproducible and scalable products. Trinty developed methods to characterise the products and support Sigmoid in the development of improvements to their manufacturing process. Small Intestine Stomach 3. 5. 2. 4.
