2 Round 3 Round 3 opened 6 October 2016 Applications close 6 December 2016 Up to $30 million will be available for Round 3 projects Programme has funded $78.9 million to date. Round 1 = $26.7 million for 12 projects Round 2 = $52.2 million for 17 projects 2

3 Programme Objective To realise productivity and profitability improvements for primary producers, through: a) Generating knowledge, technologies, products or processes that benefit primary producers; b) Strengthening pathways to extend the results of rural R&D, including understanding the barriers to adoption; and c) Establishing and fostering industry and research collaborations that form the basis for ongoing innovation and growth of Australian agriculture 3

4 Programme Priorities Applications must address one or more of the following programme priorities: advanced technology, to enhance innovation through technologies such as robotics, digitisation, big data, genetics and precision agriculture. biosecurity, to improve understanding and evidence of pest and disease pathways to help direct biosecurity resources to their best uses, minimise biosecurity threats and improve market access for primary producers. soil, water and managing natural resources, to manage soil health, improve water use efficiency and certainty of supply, sustainably develop new production areas and improve resilience to climate events and impacts. adoption of R&D, focusing of flexible delivery of extension services that meet primary producers needs and recognising the growing role of private service delivery. 4

5 Eligibility Eligibility requirements 15 RDC s eligible to apply RDC s must partner with one or more researchers, RDC s, businesses, producer groups or not-for-profit organisations. Applications must address one or more of the programme priorities Requested grant must not exceed 50% of total project cost Applicant and partner cash contributions must equal at least half of the Commonwealth grant Ineligible applications Projects that duplicate or replicate activities Projects that deliver extension services that are not directly related to R&D. 5

6 Eligible and ineligible costs Only costs that are directly incurred in carrying out or administrating the project are eligible Eligible Laboratory and/or field analyses Data analysis Field work Travel Communication materials Further details in the Programme guidelines at Ineligible costs (partial list) Preparation of application Protecting of patenting intellectual property Activities of a distinctly commercial or proprietary nature Core business expenses not directly related to carrying out the project 6

7 How to apply Complete the application forms on the website. Ensure you read the guidelines before you complete the forms There are two parts to the application form and both parts must be completed and submitted together. Word doc (Part A) and Excel doc (Part B). Answer each question. If the question does not apply, write not applicable. Where word limits apply, all words exceeding the limit will not be considered. Any modifications to the application forms (deleting questions or sections) will render the application ineligible. the completed application forms and a signed declaration to ruralresearch@agriculture.gov.au no later than 5pm 6 December

8 How applications will be assessed Applications will be examined initially by departmental officers to ensure that the applications meet eligibility requirements. An independent expert assessment panel will assess and score applications. Assessment criteria will be used to determine a project s relative ranking and suitability for funding. Assessment Criteria a) Contribution to programme objective b) Scientific or technical basis c) Benefit and collaborations d) Risk management e) Budget and costs The minister will approve projects to be funded based on recommendations from the panel. 8
