Project-wise Reports of Sectorial Monitoring Committee 1. Project Title: Upgradation of facilities: National Collection of Industrial Microorganisms (NCIMRC,CSC0407) 2. Project Details: Objectives To Create lyophilization facility at larger scale so that all cultures will be maintained in a lyophilized form which is the preferred method for preserving all microbial strains. To develop rapid identification of bacteria, fungi and some algae using 16S (or 238) ribosomal DNA gene. This technique is suitable for 1) viable on nonviable material 2) Organisms with complex growth requirements 3) gram variable isolates. External Cash Flow (ECF) generated: From 2012-16 (tiii 31.Dec.2016), ECF generated is 6.8 Crore INR. Since implementation of this project, The ECF has been increased 4 times (from 75 lakhs in 2012 to 3 Crores in 2016). 3
Newly created facilities like sequencing and Lyophilization are currently operated under service mode, which is also fetching ECF from private, industries and academia. We authenticated NCIM strain bank using DNA sequencing facility created at NCIM and we save revenue that was going outside. In addition to this, NCIM is also earning cash flow from industries and academia. Overall, CSC0407 project has been very much beneficial in upgradation of facilities of NCIM resource centre. 7. Sectoral Monitoring Committee Recommendations on Lead/Technology/Product (listed above): For each Lead/Technology/Product provide details separately: Not applicable- Facility Creation Project Criteria SMC Recommendations Name of Lead/Technology /Product Is the Lead/ Technology/Product worth taking up further? What is the further R&D efforts that need to be put by CSIRICSIR laboratories? Global benchmarking of the Lead/Technology/Product specifically wrt specifications and cost Is the Lead/Technology/Product worthy of commissioning a DPR at this stage? What are the likely resources and time duration required for taking forward the identified Lead/ Technology/Product to the 5
desired TRL? Potential stake holders who may be appropriate to partner technically as well as financially Suggestion for plausible road map towards further development of lead/technology/product for achieving desired TRL GO/NO GO further development Other suggestions, if any, related to benefits/usage/ commercialization 7. Identified "lessons to be learnt", especially from shortcomings/failures. 8. Comments on financial progress on the project fund availability and utilization of fund in the project: Financial progress found satisfactory and investment made justified 9. Sectoral Monitoring Committee Recommendations on Facility creation or other outcomes: Experiences gained, materials generated and lessons learnt are expected to have far reaching impact in years to come. The facility should be supported with additional parameters with more authentic bacterial identification using polyphasic method. The required financial resources may be provided, as this is an important national facility. The critical manpower needed to consolidate this facility be ensured. 10.
