July / August 2014 Donna Says Is your summer going by as fast as mine? I can t believe it's July already! I just started hitting that goofy golf ball straight and enjoying the sunshine. Speaking of golf, if you see Don Slaughter around the Community Center congratulate him on winning the Gold Putter award at our first annual Putt Putt golf outing. I don t know what Don English really scored but every time you asked him what his score on a hole was he always yelled 2. Check out the pictures of the event posted at the Community Center. There s still plenty of summer left to enjoy activities coming up. The Springdale Ice Cream Parlor will be serving Sundaes in July and Springdale s Gone Wild returns with six legged visitors in August. Don t forget the Neighborhood Yard Sale on August 9. I hope to see you at one or two of our events. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Bugs, Bugs, Bugs! Tuesday, August 19 7:00 p.m. Summertime is Springdale s Gone Wild time! The Great Parks of Hamilton County Naturalist will be bringing some bugs found in area parks and maybe in your backyard. There will be some little ones and not so little ones along with some slimy and creepy ones. See them up close as the naturalist explains why they are necessary in our world. Call 346-3910 or stop by the front desk to register for this free program by August 17. Search & Rescue Dogs visit Springdale Community Center Thursday, July 31 7:00 pm Have you ever seen those movies where canines are released to find a missing child? Or on the news when dogs are sniffing through building debris to find survivors? Join us in the amphitheater Thursday evening while Buckeye Search and Rescue Dogs present their organization's efforts in the tri-state area. You will learn about what their canines do, their extensive trainings, and also see some live demonstrations. In the case of bad weather, this program will be moved indoors. Call 346-3910 or stop by the front desk to register for this free program by July 29. Celebrate National Ice Cream Month! Tuesday, July 22 1:00 p.m. Take a break from the hot weather and celebrate National Ice Cream Month with us! The Springdale Ice Cream Parlor will open for a special Sundae afternoon. Enjoy a big scoop of vanilla ice cream covered with one of your favorite toppings, whip cream, nuts, and a cherry. As you enjoy your frozen treat, Stu Roemke will be sharing the United Dairy Farmers story from its start as a small dairy farm in Norwood to the UDF we know today. Stop at the front desk and register with payment of $2.00 by Friday, July 18. Creating Community Through People, Parks and Programs

Words from a Fitness Guru One of the questions I seem to be getting a lot more of recently is about arthritis. Specifically, is it safe to exercise with arthritis and if so, how? Well, the first answer is yes, exercise is very good for people with arthritis. You might think exercise will aggravate the condition but it can actually reduce joint pain and stiffness. You don t need to go all out to reduce the symptoms of arthritis. Even slight to moderate exercise can help ease pain and maintain a healthier weight (which will help lessen symptoms too.) Exercise can strengthen muscles around joints, increase bone strength and flexibility, and give you more energy. Before starting any exercise plan, talk with your doctor first. The best exercise depends on the type of arthritis and which joints are affected. Cardio exercise is the best at controlling your weight and will give you more energy. Try low-impact exercises such as swimming, walking or riding a bike. Try to do some type of cardio every day. Strength exercise will help build muscles that support your joints. You ll want to do these every other day and skip days when your joints are especially achy or swollen. Stretching or range-of-motion exercises can relieve stiffness and increase your ability to move your joint. Try to do these every day. Any movement, no matter how small, can help. Start by walking in 10 minute increments. Stop by the fitness center and we will show you how to do light exercises or stretches. Go swimming while the weather is nice. Or try one of our FREE exercise classes such as LIFE or Let s Get Fit. Arthritis doesn t have to stop you in your tracks. So get out there and forge a new path. Just make sure to put your walking shoes on first! Jay - Fitness Center Manager Line Dancing Mondays at 1:00pm Health & Wellness Badminton FREE! Cincinnati Memories #2 Thursday, July 10 2:00 p.m. Free Programs! Cincinnati Memories # 1 was such a hit with members that the tour will continue with the Cincinnati Preservation Society.
