A year of icreased activity i each of these areas culmiated i a emotioal outdoor cocert ad fudraiser orgaized by staff members i the aftermath of the Dec. 26 earthquake ad tsuami that devastated coastal commuities i the Idia Ocea regio. I the days ad weeks that followed, doatios poured ito the East-West Ceter Tsuami Relief Fud from orgaizatios ad idividuals who demostrated their solidarity i respose to the tragedy. NEWS AND INFORMATION Media coverage of the East-West Ceter expaded i 2004, ehacig the Ceter s capacity to iform policymakers ad the geeral public o issues of importace to the regio. Last year the Ceter ad its staff were cited i approximately 1,200 reports or media outlets aroud the world twice the umber of prit, broadcast ad olie ews reports i the previous year. The News ad Iformatio sectio serves as liaiso betwee the Ceter ad jouralists throughout the regio by arragig iterviews with EWC specialists; orgaizig media briefigs, ews cofereces ad editorial roudtables; writig ad editig op-ed pieces for atioal ad iteratioal publicatio; issuig ews releases, ewsletters ad related materials; ad distributig The East-West Ceter serves as a bridge betwee diverse cultures with a shared iterest i the future of the regio educatig, iformig ad raisig awareess of issues that are cetral to the lives of its people. Activities were part of Iteratioal Educatio Week, a atio-wide iitiative sposored by the U.S. Departmet of State ad U.S. Departmet of Educatio to promote global learig activities i U.S. schools. Former Assistat Secretary of State for Educatioal ad Cultural Affairs Patricia Harriso provided opeig remarks at the elemetary program, where studets explored the relatioship betwee aimals ad cultures. The high school program featured a simulatio of the six-party talks o North Korea s uclear weapos program. Kailua High School social studies teacher Amber Strog was amed recipiet of the Hawai i Iteratioal Educatio Week- Hoolulu Advertiser 2004 Outstadig Educator Award. HIEW sposors i 2004 were the Ceter s AsiaPacificEd Program, the Pacific ad Asia Affairs Coucil, ad Wo Iteratioal Ceter at Puahou School. EAST-WEST CENTER FOUNDATION The East-West Ceter Foudatio was established i 1982 as a private, o-profit orgaizatio to icrease private support from idividuals, corporatios, busiesses ad foudatios. Uder the leadership of co-chairs Ediso H. Miyawaki ad Haigo T.H. She, the EWC Foudatio Board of Directors has played a sigificat role i the cultivatio, solicitatio ad stewardship of private gifts. Cotributios The Foudatio received $249,476 i urestricted support durig the past year. Reveues icluded geeral cotributios, desigated gifts, aual dier proceeds ad sposorships. Restricted reveues of $541,515 icludig fudig by the Hawai i Pacific Rim Society for the George R. Ariyoshi Fud ad EWC Arts Program ad cotributios received for the Alumi Edowmet Fud. Aual Dier Nearly 1,000 supporters atteded the East-West Ceter Foudatio s aual dier, A Iteratioal Affair, raisig more tha $110,000 to support Ceter activities. Proceeds from the silet auctio ad sari-sari store raised over $28,000 for studet scholarships. Alumi Edowmet Fud As part of the East-West Ceter Associatio s 1960s Reuio, the East-West Ceter Foudatio established the Alumi Edowmet Fud to support studet scholarships. More tha $250,000 i pledges ad cash raised were placed i the EWC Foudatio s Edowmet Fud, where the pricipal amout will be held i perpetuity with icome from the ivestmet used to fud studet scholarships. Grats A challege grat by the McIery Foudatio stregtheed the EWC Foudatio s ability to icrease fiacial support from alumi i Asia ad the Uited States. The Foudatio matched all first-time gifts from EWC alumi ad previous doors who icreased their last gift by $100 or more up to $100 per door. Nearly $32,000 was raised durig the sprig portio of the aual campaig, with matchig fuds of $8,629.

Charitable Plaed Givig Haigo She, co-chair of the EWC Foudatio Board of Directors, pledged a bequest of $300,000 to the Ceter, to be trasferred posthumously. The Foudatio will use the gift to fud EWC scholarships for Chiese studets studyig at the Uiversity of Hawai i i the fields of medicie, educatio, architecture, city plaig ad civil egieerig. Outreach AsiaPacific Breakfast Briefigs is a EWC outreach program desiged to help Hawai i commuity leaders ad EWC Foudatio members uderstad the chagig ad dyamic regio. Sposored by Bak of Hawai i sice 1995, the series icluded six presetatios last year, icludig Islam ad Democracy: Lessos from Idoesia, by Robert Hefer, professor of athropology at Bosto Uiversity, ad Chia s Capitalist Trasitio ad Cross-Strait Relatios, by EWC Fellow Christopher McNally. Door Programs ad Recogitio The Presidet s Roudtable provides major doors with a opportuity to participate i discussios o key issues i the Asia Pacific regio. Roudtable presetatios i 2004 icluded The Chia-Japa-U.S. Triagle i Asia, by Ezra F. Vogel, the Hery Ford II Research Professor i Social Scieces at Harvard Uiversity. Free semiars to assist doors i achievig tax, estate plaig ad charitable givig objectives were preseted by estate-plaig attorey Stephe H. Reese. ARTS PROGRAM The Arts Program eriched the Hawai i commuity with cocerts, exhibitios, demostratios ad lectures featurig a variety of Asia ad Pacific performig ad visual art forms. Thousads of school childre visited the East-West Ceter Gallery. 41 PERFORMANCES: Huu-Huur Tu: Throat Sigers of Tuva preseted a public cocert of Mogolia vocal ad istrumetal music, followed by educatioal outreach to several Oahu schools i February. Elighteig Souds: the Mystery of the Bamboo Flute, a educatioal cocert-demostratio preseted five times i Hilo ad Hoolulu by Japaese shakuhachi flute master Christopher Yohmei Blasdel. A Idia Musical Odyssey, featured a esemble of six master musicias from Souther Idia, led by drummer Sri U. K. Sivarama. Public cocerts at the Imi Iteratioal Ceter were augmeted by three performace-demostratios for Hoolulu childre. Hayag Traditioal Korea Music Orchestra, a 25-member esemble, preseted two cocerts cosposored by the UH Music Departmet. Los Camperos Mariachi, the Los Ageles-based, Mexica-America music esemble gave two educatioal performaces at the EWC i 2004. EXHIBITIONS: Yua: Echatig Regio of Ethic Diversity focused o the ethicities/atioalities i Northwest Yua Provice, Chia. It was cocurated by Sam Mitchell, Lu Yua ad Beji Beigto. Xua Ke, the reowed Naxi musicia, was artisti-residece i late Jauary. Bamboo i Japaese Culture, a EWC travelig exhibitio, was displayed March-April at the Lyma Museum i Hilo. The exhibitio was created by the EWC Arts Program i collaboratio with Nacy Moore Bess. Cotemporary Japaese Crafts, was developed by the Japa Foudatio ad preseted i collaboratio with the Cosulate Geeral of Japa i Hoolulu. The exhibitio featured works of ceramics, glass, lacquer ad metal work by moder Japaese masters. This project icluded umerous educatioal services. Remais of a Raibow, featured photographs of Hawai i s rare ad edagered plats ad aimals by Susa Middleto ad David Liittschwager, preseted i collaboratio with the Nature Coservacy of Hawai i. Educatioal slide lectures ad semiars were preseted i the EWC Gallery. Mokeys: Myth, Magic, ad Mischief i the Arts of Asia, curated by Michael Schuster, featured paitigs ad threedimesioal works of art from East, Southeast, ad South Asia. I 2004 the Ceter cosposored 20 public programs icludig Reaga s Shadow: The Edurig Imprit o America Politics, with Lou Cao, former Washigto Post reporter ad biographer of Roald Reaga, ad Power, Legitimacy & Credibility: the Trasatlatic Partership i 2004, with Wolfgag Ischiger, ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germay to the Uited States. BRIEFINGS The EWC provided aalysis of regioal issues to more tha 120 govermet officials, diplomats, jouralists, military officers ad the geeral public through briefigs ad idividual meetigs with Ceter researchers ad professioal staff i 2004. Briefigs were held for the U.S. ambassadors to Thailad, Vietam, ad Malaysia, ad deputy chief of missio to Bagladesh; several State Departmet desk officers; members of the Chiese Arms Cotrol ad Disarmamet Associatio; ad Korea security policy scholars, amog others. A series of briefigs was also held for Hawai i state legislators ad local jouralists. PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVES The East-West Ceter curretly has memoradums of uderstadig with orgaizatios i 14 coutries or geographic areas i the Asia Pacific regio icludig Hog Kog, Idia, Idoesia, Sri Laka, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippies, Taiwa, Thailad, Vietam, ad Korea. EWC program represetatives provide assistace to EWC staff ad studets with visa applicatios, make Ceter materials available to prospective studets, publicize icoutry programs, ad arrage meetigs ad speakig egagemets by visitig EWC staff. FRIENDS OF THE EAST-WEST CENTER Complemetig the Ceter s outreach effort is the commuitybased orgaizatio, Frieds of the East-West Ceter. The Frieds is a o-profit voluteer orgaizatio providig support for Ceter activities. It coordiates a hostfamily program for EWC studets, admiisters the Mary Morga Hewett Jouralism Edowmet, provides voluteer assistace for special EWC evets, ad sposors a popular commuity lecture series. Last year the Frieds iaugurated a eveig dialogue series i the EWC Gallery. The first two programs were Chia s Rise: Implicatios for its Asia Pacific Neighbors, with EWC Fellow Chris McNally, ad Idia s Emergig Global Role, with EWC Fellow Aru Swamy. The Frieds also helped coordiate the studetmetorig program, matchig studets with professioals i the commuity.
The EWC/East-West Ceter Associatio 2004 Iteratioal Coferece was held i Tokyo, Japa. 43 EAST-WEST CENTER ALUMNI The East-West Ceter Associatio (EWCA) is a iteratioal etwork of professioals who have a past affiliatio with the East-West Ceter. All participats are automatically members (associates) of the EWCA, regardless of legth of stay or ature of ivolvemet. I September 2004 EWC Exteral Affairs Director Kare Kudse accompaied EWCA Presidet Da Berma to Bagladesh, Sri Laka ad Idia, where they met with media, govermet officials ad alumi to raise the visibility of the East-West Ceter, stregthe alumi chapters, ad icrease studet applicatios i South Asia. I November, alumi from 25 coutries gathered i Tokyo, Japa for the EWC/East-West Ceter Associatio Iteratioal Coferece (see page 10). EWCA Support for Studets EWCA provided support for studets seekig to achieve their professioal objectives, icludig scholarships for those who would otherwise ot have had the resources to cotiue their educatio: I 2004 six travel grats were provided to studets doig dissertatio research or participatig i professioal cofereces. More tha 120 studets have participated i the metorig program. Returig studets completig their awards were provided with alumi cotacts to assist i furtherig their professioal goals. Six studets received EWCA scholarships last year through the geerous support of alumi. New Chapters New alumi chapters were established last year i Haoi, Cheai ad Hyderabad, brigig the umber of geographical chapters i the EWCA etwork to 37.
