This document provides a summary of scholarships that have been offered over the last several years but does not guarantee that the scholarship will be available for the current year. The most accurate and complete listing is always available in Naviance. Scholarships are for seniors only, unless otherwise noted. Purple titled scholarships are indicative of those available for technical, trade, vocational and 2-year programs. Scholarship Guide Local Scholarships are available to Mt. Lebanon students only or students in the South Hills area and are typically presented at our Awards ceremony in May. All scholarships are subject to approval of the scholarship committees and are offered on an annual basis. Pittsburgh Foundation Scholarships are those that apply to Mt. Lebanon students or include Mt. Lebanon students in their criteria. There are many other scholarships available on this site and students should look for other scholarships that pertain to their course of study and/or circumstances. Other Scholarships include national, regional or other programs that are available to the general public. MTLSD does not endorse or guarantee these scholarships.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS BARBA FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: Barba Family The Barba Family Scholarship was inspired by the perseverance of the donor's immigrant parents to provide their six children with a higher education. The scholarship honors her parents' ambition by providing a Mexican American student at Mt. Lebanon High School with $1,000 to be used towards the cost of attending a four year university. BASH Sponsored by: The Black Association of South Hills for Women BASH, through community participation in its fundraisers and corporate donations, awards scholarships to graduating seniors within the target areas of the South Hills and Washington County that are pursuing higher education at an accredited University, College, Community College, technical or trade school. BASH recognizes local high school graduates to inspire and motivate them toward higher education. Applicants for the scholarships compete for cash awards on the basis of academic performance, an essay, extracurricular activities and counselor/teacher references. CELIA SLAGER WEST-KUSHNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: Field Hockey Program in Mt. Lebanon This scholarship was established in memory of Coach West-Kushner who started the Field Hockey Program in Mt. Lebanon in 1997. The scholarship is to be awarded to a senior from the Mt. Lebanon Field Hockey Team. CONCORDIA LUTHERAN MINISTRIES Sponsored by: Concordia Lutheran Ministries Scholarships will be awarded both on academic achievements and financial need to graduating seniors matriculating at an undergraduate institution to pursue a degree in a healthcare related field. This is a paperless process. DAVID KENNETH HELD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: Mt. Lebanon Public Libary Requirements include creating a short video production of 1-3 minutes using the theme "More" at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library. Entries must be teen-produced and directed, and may be either a group project of individual work. Each entry may only represent one eligible senior; the scholarship will not be split among a group. Video submissions must be accompanied by the application.

DAVE BRAGDON SCHOLARSHIP FUND Created to help a deserving graduate feel the joy that Dave Bragdon (Mt. Lebanon class of 2001) got, and spread to his family and friends, from reading, music and theater. Scholarship has been funded to celebrate the life tragically cut short at age 18, of a young man who brought joy to everyone whose life he touched with his humor, compassion, love and hugs. Use application on website and apply to The Pittsburgh Foundation. GIANT OAKS GARDEN CLUB SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: Giant Oaks Garden Club This scholarship is awarded ONLY to High School students who plan to study earth sciences such as Agronomy, Biology, Botany, City Planning, Conservation, Environmental Control, Environmental Science, Floriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Land Management, Landscape Architecture, Plant Pathology and/or allied subjects. Additional scholarships can be found at www.pagardenclubs.org. JENNIE ERMOLD BEACHLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Jennie Ermold Beachler Scholarship Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation was created to provide post secondary scholarship assistance to students attending Mt. Lebanon High School who are pursuing postgraduate education at a college, university, junior college, or trade school in Pennsylvania. The students must demonstrate financial need, plan to attend a two or four year college or technical school, and demonstrate athletic,artistic, musical, or theatrical achievement or ability. LAURA CROWLEY MEMORIAL CHEERLEADING SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in memory of Laura Crowley, a 2008 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, who unexpectedly passed away in January 2009. Laura loved traveling, cheerleading and was pursuing a career in medicine when her life tragically ended. She was a leader in all aspects of her life and always had time to lend a hand or ear to a friend or co-worker. Laura left an unforgettable impression on many hearts through her enthusiasm, uplifting spirit and gorgeous smile. This scholarship will be awarded to a qualified candidate who emulates Laura s spirit, leadership and ambition. LIEUTENANT TERRENCE MULKEEN MEMORIAL AWARD Lieutenant Terrence Mulkeen was a 1977 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School where he played football and basketball. After ten years as a pilot in the U. S Navy, Terry was killed in the line of duty. The recipient of this award must have earned a varsity letter in a WPIAL sport. MATTHEW CONOVER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in memory of Matthew Conover. Matthew, who passed away in July 2002 after a courageous battle with lymphoma, was a 12 year old student at Mellon Middle School. He played drums in the band and was known for his friendly smile. This scholarship will be awarded to an individual who had been involved in a music program and plans to attend a two or four year college or technical school.

MICHAEL COHEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Michael N. Cohen Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior (or seniors) intending to continue his/her education as a full-time student at The Pennsylvania State University or any of its branch campuses. Although academic success is important, it is not the only aspect considered for this scholarship. Michael lived his life to the fullest, brought laughter to all who knew him, and enriched others lives by reaching out to people in friendship, acceptance and loyalty. This scholarship wishes to recognize students who embody the same special qualities that Michael exemplified. MT. LEBANON ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The purpose of this award is to give a deserving student-athlete financial aid while he/she pursues academics and athletics in college at the same challenging and ultimately rewarding level that the recipient pursued at Mt. Lebanon High School. The applicant should show a strong desire to achieve academic and athletic excellence throughout college. MT. LEBANON EDUCATION SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: Education Support Professional Association This scholarship will be awarded to a student who is interested in pursuing a career in areas such as automotive technician, carpenter, electrician, HVAC, aviation mechanic, plumber, pipe fitter, welder, secretary, culinary arts and any other skilled trade jobs. The scholarship committee will also consider students academic records and involvements in the school community when selecting finalists. MT. LEBANON FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: Mt. Lebanon Federal Credit Union The Mt. Lebanon Federal Credit Union Scholarship will be awarded to a Mt. Lebanon High School student who is the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a current or former Mt. Lebanon School District employee who is also a current member of the Mt. Lebanon Federal Credit Union. The scholarship committee will also consider academic merit. MT. LEBANON JUNIOR WOMEN S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: The Mt. Lebanon Junior Women's Club The Mt. Lebanon Junior Women s club is interested in recognizing young women who have contributed to their community and school while demonstrating leadership skills and high academic standards by awarding this scholarship. MT. LEBANON POLICE ASSOCIATION Sponsored by: Mt. Lebanon Police Association This scholarship will be awarded annually to members of the senior class for the purpose of continued education at the college, university, technical school or business school of the recipient s choice. The number of scholarships and the amount of the award are determined by the Scholarship Committee.

MT. LEBANON RETIRED SCHOOL EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION Sponsored by: Mt. Lebanon Retired School Employees Association The MLRSEA scholarship will be awarded to a Mt. Lebanon High School Senior who will be continuing his or her education at a four year college/university or business school, secretarial school, vocational school, or technical school. PAUL L WELLENER III MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship award is being given in the memory of Paul Wellener, a longtime member and past president of the Mt. Lebanon Parent s Athletic Council. Paul was a former school board member and served his community in many capacities as a coach of the youth of Mt. Lebanon and as a community volunteer and leader. The purpose of this award is to recognize and reward a Mt. Lebanon High School senior student-athlete who has been accepted to and is planning to attend the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. PAUL ROBERT GARLITZ, JR., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP In tribute to Paul Garlitz s character, dedication to Mt. Lebanon as both a student athlete and an adult resident, and his commitment to the development of the sports programs and student athletes in the Greater Pittsburgh Area, the Garlitz family, friends and his Mt. Lebanon Class of 1954 have established an annual scholarship in his memory. RICHARD J. MADDEN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: Richard J. Madden Foundation FOR JUNIORS ONLY! The Richard J. Madden Scholarship is a scholarship for Mt. Lebanon High School JUNIORS needing post secondary scholarship assistance. Students who plan to attend a two or four year college or technical school within the United States are eligible. Financial need is one of the most important criteria. Students are encouraged to apply. The scholarship recipient will receive up to $11,250 per year (maximum of $45,000) if a 3.0 grade point average is maintained. RICHARD O. DUNHAM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to a Mt. Lebanon High school senior who has an interest in music and/or archaeology and is average or better in scholastic performance. The scholarship has been established by the family of Richard O. Dunham, a Mt. Lebanon graduate of the class of 1975 who died accidentally in Colorado in August, 1977. SOUTH HILLS COLLEGE CLUB Sponsored by: South Hills College Club This scholarship will be awarded at the regular May meeting of the College Club. The criteria to be used to evaluate and select the awardees in order of importance are financial need, academic standing, and personal evaluation, participation in school and extra curricular activities or employment.

THE BLUE DEVIL CLUB/ANNE MATHISON QUINN SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Two scholarships will be awarded, one each to a male and a female, who are varsity letter winners in their senior year. Criteria includes acceptance at a college, junior college or community college as a full-time student. This award is weighted towards athletic accomplishments. THE FRIENDS OF MT. LEBANON PUBLIC LIBRARY Sponsored by: Mt. Lebanon Public Library The scholarships given by the Friends have the express purpose of recognizing those high school seniors from Mt. Lebanon who exhibit community leadership through volunteerism at the library. One or two scholarships may be awarded each year. The scholarship committee reserves the right not to award scholarships in any given year. Students must have volunteered 55 hours within the 12 months prior to applying and must be attending an accredited college, university or institute of higher learning as a freshman next fall. THE LAURIE E. LUST ACHIEVEMENT AWARD This award is being given in memory of Laurie E. Lust, 1979-1994. Laurie lived life with startling exuberance and enthusiasm. She let very little get her down and when things sometimes didn t go her way she dealt with them honestly and maturely. The goal of this award is to recognize and reward a senior student at Mt. Lebanon High School for achieving to their highest potential scholastically and/or athletically while coping with their adversity. THE LEO AND MARIE RUSSELL SCHOLARSHIP The children of Leo and Marie Russell will award two scholarships annually to a Mt. Lebanon High School male and female who will be attending Penn State University with a preference given to students entering the School of Engineering, but not necessarily required. The student must also demonstrate academic achievement, leadership potential and community service. The scholarship will be merit based. THE MT. LEBANON STRING FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP The Mt. Lebanon String Festival Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior(s) who will pursue a music major or music minor at an institution of higher education. Applicants must have participated in the Mt. Lebanon String Festival during their senior year. The applicant s participation in past Mt. Lebanon String Festivals and his/her dedication and spirit of participation to the Mt. Lebanon High School Orchestra will also be considered.

THE POPI HAGELIOS MEMORIAL PHILANTHROPY AWARD OF THE PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY OF HOLY CROSS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH This scholarship is to serve a senior graduating from Mt. Lebanon High School. The purpose of this award is to assist and recognize a personal philanthropic experience that a student has been actively involved with during their time in high school TIMOTHY C KENNEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Timothy C Kenney Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Timothy Kenney, a mathematics teacher at Mt. Lebanon High School from 1971-2006. The scholarship is established to recognize a graduating senior who achieves excellence in the field of mathematics and plans to pursue a career in mathematics, mathematics education or statistics. Students wishing to study engineering may also apply for this scholarship. TY SHIELDS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Ty Shields Memorial Scholarship will be awarded each year to a graduating senior wishing to continue his/her education at an institute of higher learning. The scholarship will be given to the applicant(s) that best exemplifies the qualities that Ty strove to achieve including tolerance and respect for all individuals, a spirit of participation in school and community and the ability to enrich the lives of others by a simple word or deed. WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP FUND This scholarship was created to provide a scholarship to a worthy and deserving former Washington Elementary graduate. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has continued to show leadership qualities, with a commitment to putting others first, while also demonstrating integrity and dedication toward academics and their community.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS ABBOTT AND FENNER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Sponsored by: Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants FOR JUNIORS & SENIORS! Abbott & Fenner are committed to continuing our efforts at helping those who have the desire and ambition to succeed. The winner(s) of this annual scholarship will receive their award within 2 weeks of the listed deadline. AES ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: AES Engineering Solutions AES Engineering is pleased to be able to continue offering scholarships to motivated students to help in the furthering of their education. Our belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by an evaluation of the essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible. AFSA SCHOLARSHIPS Sponsored by: American Fire Sprinkler Association Open to High School Seniors who want to pursue a college degree or trade school education. ALLEGHENY COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL RETIREES This scholarship is offered to a high school senior who is planning on pursuing a career in education. The scholarship is awarded on the following basis: Scholarship 50%, Leadership & Service 25%, Financial Need 25%. There will be one scholarship award which is payable at the beginning of the second semester of college upon proof of matriculation. ALLEGHENY COUNTY SCHOOL COUNSELORS ASSOCIATION Sponsored by: Allegheny County School Counselors Association The purpose of the ACCA Scholarship is to encourage current senior high school students to pursue postsecondary education.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF DRILLING ENGINEERS Sponsored by: Range Resources Appalachia Applicants who secure a $1,000 scholarship for their freshman year at college will be eligible to apply for one of three planned $2,000 annual scholarships which may be in effect for the remaining three years of college. ASIAN & PACIFIC ISLANDER AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND Sponsored by: Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund APIASF offers scholarship opportunities for Asian American and Pacific Islander students with financial need to increase their access to higher education and resources that cultivate their academic, personal, and professional success. The APIASF General Scholarship Program: Offers a range of scholarships from one-time awards to multiyear awards. APIASF offers awards that can be used to cover the total cost of attendance, not just tuition, room, and board. Focuses on students who are representative of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community's geographic and ethnic diversity. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by: National Federation of the Blind, Pennsylvania To recognize achievement by blind scholars, the National Federation of the Blind annually offers blind college students in the United States and Puerto Rico the opportunity to win one of thirty merit-based, national-level scholarships. All scholarships awarded are based on academic excellence, community service, and leadership.
