Job Description Job Title: Caretaker Responsible to: School Business Manager Main roles and responsibilities o The duties of the Caretaker shall include: - o The security of the premises and to respond to any calls, which may be made as a result of the intruder/fire alarms being activated. o N.B. Subject to the Local Education Authority Guidelines Document on Security of School Premises the Caretaker, being responsible for security, will be custodian of keys for those premises for which he has responsibility. This does not mean that the Caretaker is the sole owner of the keys and he must relinquish keys to the Headteacher or his representative when requested to do so. o The lighting and heating of the premises including accommodation used solely for education catering where there are common services. o The cleaning of the premises including as appropriate: - Cleaning duties as prescribed in the procedural document contained within the Caretakers, Headteacher Handbook. Responsibility during the day, for cleaning toilets and emergency spillages as directed by the Headteacher or his representative. Cleaning / tidying storeroom cupboards as directed by the Headteacher or his representative. Cleaning toilets/rooms following evening use where other arrangements have not been made. Responsibility for specified cleaning area (e.g. Main Hall, Sports Hall & Gymnasium). o Porterage duties within the limits of the physical capacity of the individual and with regard to the guidelines issued by the Health and Safety executive on safe handling. o Supervision of the whole of the premises. o Personal responsibility for ensuring that all areas within the site are kept clean, tidy, litter and weed free.

o To maintain adequate security arrangements for school premises and staff, including monitoring and maintaining the CCTV, fire and security alarm systems and emergency lighting, and to advise on faults, liaising with appropriate agencies as necessary. o Record and update position of service outlets (gas, electric and water) and assist with location for inspection purposes etc. as and when necessary. o Cleaning all surface gullies. During periods of dry weather gullies must be kept topped up with water so as to avoid smells. o Cleaning gutters periodically to keep them clean of accumulations; o Disinfecting, as required by Headteacher or his representative, all drains, w.c. s and refuse bins and ensuring all drains are kept clean of debris and free running; o To arrange for safe disposal of all school waste in accordance with relevant statutory requirements (e.g. fluorescent tubes). o Ensuring that all doors, windows and gates are locked each night. All lights are switched off (excluding emergency lighting). o The Caretaker is responsible for checking cleaning materials and maintaining consumption records of water, gas, electricity and any other fuel. o Reporting to the Headteacher or his representative immediately any loss or damage which may occur to property. o The following are some of the 'household' type maintenance duties that a Caretaker may be expected to carry out. (This list is not exhaustive). Reasonable painting and maintenance duties Repair / replacement of broken furniture, fixtures and fittings; Replacement of fluorescent tubes and starters; o During periods of severe weather, it shall be the Caretaker s responsibility to take such measures as may be necessary to prevent freezing of water systems and paths etc. so as to keep premises functional. o Personal responsibility for the boiler house. To ensure that no unauthorised items are stored there and that it is maintained in a safe and tidy condition. Storage areas are to be kept in a tidy and clean condition, allowing safe access / egress and ensuring all items are stored safely. o To report to the Headteacher or his representative any defects/issues which might affect the health safety and security of any persons attending the premises (e.g. rooms not cleaned, gas escapes, etc); o To carry out prescribed security procedures for school buildings and grounds and to take reasonable and practical steps to prevent any unauthorised parking of vehicles or use of the school grounds. o Receive and direct all contractors visiting or working on the premises.

o Receipt and checking of all goods and supplies delivered to the premises during school holidays only. o To daily empty all external and large internal refuse bins and to dispose of the refuse to the designated points. To ensure that wheelie bins/container are unlocked at the start of the school day and locked at end of the school day. o Cleaning of windows / glazed panels to both interior and exterior elevations. This is envisaged as an ongoing process, which can be completed over a reasonable period of time, as directed by the Headteacher. Appropriate equipment will be provided. o Gardening duties / maintenance of flower borders, as directed by the Headteacher. o Such other duties relating to the use of premises commensurate with the level and responsibilities of the post. o To report issues relating to Health & Safety and management and maintenance including fire protection, and ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and appropriate action taken. o Reporting any cleaning staff absence or area(s) not cleaned to the nominated person/department. o Line Management responsibility for directly employed cleaning staff (should the current contract for cleaning come to an end).

Person Specification Essential Desirable Qualifications Basic general education Recognised training/qualifications associated with caretaking/diy/electrics/plumbing. Certificate for PAT testing electrical equipment or willingness to undertake training. A valid and clean UK driver s licence. Experience Previous caretaking/premises experience working within a school or similar setting. Experience/knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations including COSHH. Skills Experience of building maintenance work. Willingness and ability to be on standby call out for any emergencies that arise at the school. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, including covering for colleagues as necessary. Good communication skills both written and oral and the ability to communicate effectively with both staff, students and the wider community. Ability to use ICT programmes (i.e. word and excel), the internet and email to support the administration and record-keeping work of the caretakers. Ability to open and close the premises at the beginning and end of the day and to be a registered key holder. Ability to be responsible for the security of the premises and contents. Ability to identify, monitor and carry out repairs and redecoration. Ability to monitor work carried out by outside contractors.

Additional requirements Ability to monitor the cleanliness and standards of hygiene in the school and carry out cleaning as required. A willingness to be flexible regarding working hours and duties. Ability to work on own initiative and to prioritise when working under pressure in order to meet deadlines. The ability to notice what needs to be done and work on own initiative to carry our tasks or referring the matter to the School Business Manager. A good health and attendance record. Physical ability to carry out manual handling tasks (i.e. lifting, climbing and moving items)
