JOB DESCRIPTION 1 Job Identification Job Title: Job Reference: Department & Base: Hours of Work: Theatre Practitioner NM1723 Main Theatre, Anaesthetic Department, Borders General Hospital 37.5 hrs per week Pay Band: Band 5 2 Job Purpose As an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team the post holder will contribute to the effective day-to-day operation of NHS Borders Main Theatres by providing skilled assistance to clinicians during the administration, maintenance and termination of general regional or local anaesthetics, or undertake scrubbing and circulating duties and providing skilled care in the recovery suite. This is part of the Anaesthetic Department consists of: Main Theatre. Recovery area. Day Procedure Unit. Intensive Therapy Unit. Area Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit (ASDU). Acute and Chronic Pain Services. The Theatre Suite comprises of 5 theatres plus a reception and recovery which provides perioperative care for patients undergoing major, minor, emergency and elective procedures in: Orthopaedic. General surgery. Urology. Gynaecology / obstetrics. Upper & lower GI endoscopy. Scrub practitioner or Anaesthetic practitioner assistance is also provided for: Emergency Department (ED). Cardioversion. CT and Radiology. Inter hospital transfers. On site major incident team. Shift patterns include: Page 2 of 8

Weekend working. Late shifts. Night duty rotation. On-call commitment. The post holder may be required to work in any other ward or department within NHS Borders within their scope of professional practice. 5 Main Duties/Responsibilities Clinical Assess patient needs, develop, implement and evaluate peri-operative (ie: pre, intra & post operative) utilising research findings as appropriate. Prepare patients for clinical/ operative procedures, both in anaesthetics and surgery. Provide assistance in clinical/ operative procedures, both in anaesthetics and surgery. Act as advocate for the patient in situations in which they are unable to speak for themselves or have indicated their wishes. Provide effective communication and empathetic reassurance to all patients in the perioperative environment. Carry out all duties required of the Scrub practitioner or Anaesthetic practitioner in all areas of the hospital in both elective and emergency situations. Including major and minor cases and critically ill patients. Undertake the role of scrub practitioner in major, minor, emergency and elective procedures performed within the theatre suite. Undertake the role of circulating practitioner in major, minor, emergency and elective procedures performed within the theatre suite. Undertake the role of postoperative recovery practitioner as required. Post operative recovery of emergency, elective, major and minor cases, including acute pain management. Promote high standards of Infection Control with adherence to NHS Borders and Departmental policies and guidelines. Ensure that as a theatre practitioner all procedures are carried out in accordance with NHS Borders and Departmental policies, protocols and guidelines and these procedures are also evidence based. Store, administer of medicines according to the NMC Code of Practice / HPC Code of Practice and NHS Borders Policy. Adherence to COSHH regulations. Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team. Ensure the accurate collection of data in relation to theatre activity. Page 3 of 8

The list of responsibilities is not to be considered exhaustive and the post holder may be asked by the senior theatre practitioner to perform any duties considered commensurate with the Band 5 post and matched to eksf post outlines. 6 Educational, Professional Development and Training To take every reasonable opportunity for maintaining, developing and acquiring competencies and skills for self development. Adhere at all times to the NMC / HPC Code of Professional Conduct. Act as a mentor and deliver induction orientation for new members of staff and supervise junior staff. The post holder will be appraised on an annual basis and the process will include a review of the past year s performance, objectives setting and Professional Development Planning for the coming year. Undertake staff appraisals as stipulated by the senior theatre practitioners. 7 Managerial Act as team leader in the absence of senior staff and co-ordinate the elective, emergency and out of hour s theatre list accordingly. Participate fully as a team member, including working in all areas of the theatre suite, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, to promote a cohesive team and the achievement of team objectives. Report complaints, clinical and non- clinical incidents in accordance with NHS Borders Policy. Maintain equipment and supply levels and reporting faults in accordance with NHS Borders Policy. 8 Decisions and Judgements Have the ability to recognise situations where you require assistance and accept advice from a senior theatre practitioner. Recognise your own ability and limitations and identify these to your line manager. Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations within owns area and others. 9 Communications and Relationships Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Promote good relationships with patients, public and all staff in and out of the department either verbally and or in writing. Actively listen and seek opinions from the multidisciplinary team. 10 Physical Demands of the Job As a scrub practitioner you will be required to be standing for long periods in same position. Highly developed manual dexterity in order to safely undertake a variety of difficult and complex tasks. Assisting with moving and transporting of conscious and unconscious patients while ensuring all moving and handling guidelines are adhered to. Moving beds/furniture/equipment /instrument trays transporters and camera systems etc as required. Be able to respond promptly and accurately to emergency or unplanned situations. Potential control and restraint of physically aggressive patients. Working in a hazardous environment i.e.: exposure prone procedures, Image Intensifier X-rays, exposure to chemical substances and to body fluids. 11 Most Challenging/Difficult Parts of the Job Prioritising and meeting competing demands from patients and members of the health professional groups. Maintaining and developing appropriate skills and knowledge to be an effective member of the multidisciplinary team within the peri-operative environment. Physical and mental demands of responding speedily and accurately to emergency or unplanned situations. Maintaining and updating knowledge and skills in order to work effectively in the role of anaesthetic, scrub, circulating and post-op recovery practitioner.
