We wish you a speedy recovery and keep hydrated, John. I have also heard that Clive Baum has had a setback as a result of a fall at home. President s Report: 13-02-2018 Joy Varughese, Jill Fletcher and I attended a meeting with RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) representatives last week to discuss the status of the many Projects sponsored under the name of the Rotary Club of Croydon in relation to present RAWCS expectations. Unfortunately, John Anderson was unable to attend as he was in hospital. As the meeting was at John s office he ensured, through Dawn and his staff, that the meeting continued and was well catered for. Thanks John, Dawn and the staff of Anderson Associates. We will be carefully considering each project to determine whether they are still current and active and that they meet the current project criteria of the Rotary Australia Overseas Aid Fund. This criteria includes having a committee of three Croydon members to manage each project, maintaining complete financial records audited by the Croydon Club and to evaluate regularly the outcomes and impact of the project activities supported and be aware of terrorism and sex tourism/child protection issues and ensure they do not inadvertently support these activities in any way. The responsibilities of the Croydon Club in respect of these existing projects and requests for further new project activity will be carefully considered by the working group and recommendations presented to the Board. Members are reminded that the Trachoma Live event is to be held 19-25 February 2018. Our own RI President, Ian Riseley, headlines our list of distinguished presenters! The purpose of the EndTrachoma by 2020 Trachoma Live event is to inform, communicate with, and enlighten as many Rotarians and friends about Trachoma in Australia. We have been requested by the Community Policing Unit to partner with them at the inaugural Croydon Diversity Festival on 16 th and 17 th March. They will be setting up a stall to provide crime prevention information and promote engagement with communities. The event is being organized by the Croydon Traders Association. We will be considering our options, including running a BBQ, as to how our Club can participate in the event. Tony Wright has been busy contacting sponsors and players for the Annual Golf Day to be held on Thursday 8th March. Tony will be seeking members assistance to follow up to confirm sponsor engagement. This event represents our major fundraiser for the year. More posters are available from Tony. Guest speakers at the Thursday 22 th February meeting of The Rotary Club of Montrose and District will be PDG Carol and Frank Lawton. They will be reporting on their recent visit to India as part of a team from D9810 for the National Polio Immunization Program. The meeting is at 6.45 for 7.00pm at Japara Living & Learning Centre, 54-58 Durham Road Kilsyth 3137 (Mel 51 H5). The Croydon Proactive Policing Unit, represented by Leading Senior Constable Audrey Jones and Senior Constable Peter Williams with their Rotary funded vehicle at Croydon Bunnings last week when they spoke about home security. Chairman s Report Past District Governor Tony Monley who is currently the D9810 Foundation Chair, spoke about the Rotary Foundation, briefly touching on its beginning, its growth history, its focus, its impact and how our District and our club benefit from it. The History The Rotary Foundation had its beginning with the proposal by RI President Arch Klumph in 1917 to set up an endowment for the purpose of doing good in the world. The endowment was set up with the initial donation of US$ 26.50. This endowment, renamed The Rotary Foundation in 1928 and being a distinct entity within Rotary International, did not really grow until 1947 when, on the death of Paul Harris, contributions started pouring in from Rotarians in his memory. By now, the Foundation has received more than US$ 1 billion, from Rotarians, non-rotarians, philanthropists and National Governments. Three important programs were launched by the Foundation in 1965-66, namely Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training and Matching Grants. With the introduction of Health, Hunger and Humanity (3H) grants in 1978, the first major Grant was made for immunising 6 million children in The Philippines against Polio. In 1985 the PolioPlus Program was launched to eradicate Polio worldwide. The 1987-88 peace forum led to the establishment of the Rotary Peace fellowships. The new Grants model that we have today was launched in 2013. The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to promote and foster International Understanding and Goodwill. In 2017, The Foundation received funds totalling US$ 400 million while dispensing US$270 million for its activities. Areas of Focus The Rotary Foundation provides Grants for projects in these 6 Areas of Focus be they local or international: Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Disease Prevention and Treatment Water and Sanitation Maternal and Child Health Basic Education and Literacy Economic and Community Development.
System of Funding Projects Donations received from Rotarians and others in any Rotary Year are credited to the club or District they are received from. Donations from each District is invested for 3 years to earn returns which are used to pay for TRF administration. The capital amount is then divided into 2 under The Share system with one half being returned to the District while the other half goes into the pooled World Fund. The half returning to the District in the third year is the District Designated Fund (DDF) which is made available as District Grants for club projects. The World Fund is the source of Global Grants or the former Matching Grants. District Grants Small-scale, short-term projects, local or international Single grant awarded annually District Grant (Matched ($2,000 3,000) Global Grant (Matched $2,000 5,000) Global Grants Large, long-term projects aligned to Areas of Focus International partnerships required Minimum project size of US$30,000. Minimum 30% from International Partner(s) Ways to Support The Rotary Foundation The main ways of supporting The Foundation is by donating to the following: PolioPlus Fund (towards eradication of Polio worldwide) Annual Fund (towards support for Today s activities) 1. Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) US$100 per year. In Australia we encourage support through the Centurion Program (AU$100 per year) 2. Paul Harris Fellow (US$1,000 within a year). 3. Paul Harris Society Member (US$1,000 per year to any of the funds). Endowment Fund (to secure Tomorrow s activities) Major Donor (Personal outright or cumulative donation of US$10,000 or more) Bequest Society (provision in estate plan totalling US$10,000 or more) Arch Klumph Society Trustees Circle (US$250,000 or more) Chair s Circle (US$500,00 or more) Foundation Circle (US$1 million or more) The talk ended after many questions were asked and satisfactory answers given. Email from Sam Thomas our Exchange Student in Germany Hi Ian, I hope all is going well at the club and a big hello to everyone there. I've had a very busy month! When I arrived at the airport, all of my host families for the year were there to welcome me. I quickly settled in to day to day life and started attending school a few days after I arrived. Since then, I have been to one rotary meeting at my host club and one RYE event at a German history museum in Bonn. I have visited a few places with my first host family. I have been to 3 museums so far and spent a day skiing at the snow. Everything is going well and I will send more info to you soon! Thanks, Samuel

Mike is a double amputee and he is a great speaker on resilience and overcoming adversity. Mike always asks the audience, Put up your hand if there is something in your life that you know you need to deal with but you find excuses to avoid action or simply ignore it? Most of us know what our particular dead weight is but, for whatever reason we don t want to deal with it and this refusal robs us of energy and vitality. Croydon Multicultural Festival The key objective of the first Croydon Multicultural Festival is to provide a platform for the celebration of the rich cultural diversity of Maroondah through the participation by members of multicultural community groups showcasing their respective cultural traditions and heritage. The Festival takes place in the centre of Croydon 16-17 March and is a fun, free, family-friendly event that incudes activities, shows, food stalls, costume exhibition, dancing and celebrations. Local restaurants and cafes will provide exceptional multicultural street food. There will be Mexican, Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Thai, Chinese, African, Indian, Korean and many other delicious cuisines offered. The festival starts Friday night with a Multicultural Dinner Experience & live entertainment, then continues on Saturday (10am-16pm) with the Festival Day. We invite multicultural community groups to participate in this festival with music or dance performance for a maximum of 30 min. It is a great opportunity to introduce cultural traditions, tell stories and have fun. At the end of the festival we encourage 2 members of each cultural groups to come forward and tie a ribbon on the United Nations Tree as a symbol of the human unity. We hope you take part of this great celebration.
