The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is one-seventh the size of the famed French shrine where the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette on 18 occasions in 1858. Visiting the site on one of his many trips to his native country, Notre Dame founder Father Edward Sorin vowed to reproduce it on the campus of his new university. A gift from Rev. Thomas Carroll, a former theology student, made it possible in 1896. Boulders from surrounding farms, most weighing two tons or more, were used in its construction. A small piece of stone from the original grotto in France is located on the right-hand side of the shrine directly below the statue of Mary. To Notre Dame students and alumni, the Grotto is a special place to spend a few quiet moments, and especially during football weekends and finals, you might have difficulty finding a candle to light. Hundreds of students have proposed marriage here; outdoor Masses are celebrated regularly; and the Rosary is prayed every day at 6:45 p.m., every day of the year, rain or shine. Guest Services Team (GSTs) As an extension of Notre Dame s Usher Program, our GSTs are positioned around campus to assist guests and provide assistance. Please look for staff in Green Blazers or polos around campus and driving Courtesy Carts while visiting Notre Dame. H Hesburgh Library (Touchdown Jesus/Word of Life Mural) In honor and tribute to the late Father Theodore Hesburgh, the University library was renamed the Theodore Hesburgh Library in 1987. This building, which was the largest college library in the world when it opened in 1963, now joins with several other libraries on campus collectively called the Hesburgh Libraries to contain 3 million volumes, 2 million microfiche units, more than 17,000 serial subscriptions, and 12,000 audio recordings. The building is also traditionally an important gathering place for students on campus, whether they want to collaborate in groups, embark on a pursuit of study materials, or make use of the latest technology in their entrepreneurial research. 13

The library features the Word of Life Mural often referred to as Touchdown Jesus. With Jesus depicted in a famous mural as the Word of Life, facing Notre Dame Stadium as the great teacher, the 14 stories of the Hesburgh Library make an impact on football fans and on scholars from around the world. The image can be seen over the north end zone. It is 132 feet high and 65 feet wide, containing 81 types of stone from 16 countries. Father Hesburgh was University president for 35 years from 1952 to 1987. Hospitality Seating FAQ What sort of premium seating options will be available as a result of the new construction? Today, it serves primarily as a headquarters for administration, although it still contains classrooms, harking back to a time when it was a crossroads where students learned, ate meals, and resided. This structure is actually the third building to stand on the site. It was built in 1879, the same year in which the previous building was destroyed by fire. The Golden Dome was added to this building in 1882 and was most recently regilded in 2005. The regilding process uses only about a fistful of gold leaf to cover the entire structure. Atop the Dome, you will find a 19-foot-tall, 4,000-pound statue of Mary, the Mother of God, Notre Dame ( Our Lady ). With this beautiful adornment, the Main Building is 187 feet tall, making it the second tallest structure on campus after the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Stadium Enhancements Enhancements to Notre Dame Stadium include outdoor club-level seating within the east and west buildings. Additionally, terraces will adorn each of these buildings, allowing for a view of both campus and the playing field. Restrooms on all levels include new lighting, flooring, and fixtures. All bathrooms were renovated and now comply with accessibility standards. Sinks and trough urinals have been replaced by new individual wall mounted fixtures. All water closets now have automatic flush valves. Every restroom has new LED lighting and speakers for the public address and paging system. Dropped ceilings are gone, and the original structure painted. Look up and notice the period specific light fixtures. New toilet partitions sport art deco-inspired numbers and echo the branding graphics within the concourse. Improved amenities, coupled with aesthetic branding, will make restroom visits less foreboding. Benches and drink rails now appear throughout the concourses. The backs of the benches were constructed from reclaimed bleacher wood, as were the drink rails. New portable concessions stands, condiment stands, and trash/recycling also have been introduced. While lower bowl concessions facades were painted to highlight the 24

original beadboard trim from the 1930s stadium, every stand is now outfitted with multiple video monitors that can feature either game coverage, menu options, or both. Floor graphics in this area bring the feeling of the field inside the concourses. Fans will know if they are standing on the extended 20-, 30-, 40- or 50-yard line. These field graphics also serve as a way-finding cue to identify where fans are in areas within the stadium. Customers will enjoy the refreshed concessions menu developed by Levy, the new concessionaire, which features new low price points for key menu items. The entire lower bowl has been reseated, with seats now two inches wider than in the past. The "gold" seats are now blue. The video board in the south end zone (96 feet across by 54 feet high) will enhance the fan experience and generate a greater level of excitement. The content will feature live game action, replays, celebratory moments in Notre Dame history, and promotion of Notre Dame core values. Ribbon boards will run the length of Corbett Family Hall and Duncan Student Center buildings, approximately 3.75 feet in height. Like the video board, these ribbons will feature key game information, stats, and important messaging. Video monitors (149 of them, most of them 55 inches in width) in various locations throughout the concourses emphasize a special focus on concession stand facades. A new audio system has been installed featuring concert-quality sound. A speaker array flanks each side of the video board in the south end of the stadium, and the sound system in the concourse areas is new. An open, fan-facing Wi-Fi network is available throughout the seating area of the bowl and the concourses, allowing fans to more easily stay connected with their mobile devices. Notre Dame has partnered with AmpThink to design and build the network, with approximately 1,200 access points installed throughout the bowl and concourse. Cellular coverage has been greatly enhanced through the addition of a distributed antenna system (DAS). The existing press box was completely removed and replaced by additional seating. The press box will moved to the east side of the stadium. NBC Sports will continue to broadcast home football games from the west side of the stadium. Enhancements to the south side of the stadium include a redesigned Frank Leahy Gate, creating a grand entrance to Notre Dame Stadium.
