BELMONT VILLAGE OF RANCHO PALOS VERDES E VILLAGE NEWS A NOTE FROM MIKI Can you believe we are three months away from the end of 2017? Where has the time gone? As the season turns to fall, I hope you can reflect on the great times we have had together at Belmont Village over the past summer from our Memorial Day BBQ, Fourth of July Picnic, Family Appreciation Luau to finally our Labor Day BBQ. What wonderful memories we have made with friends and family. I want to give a bit of gratitude to those who assisted Belmont Village in its continued support of the Alzheimer s association. Whether you purchased a T-shirt, participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer s, or gave a monetary donation, all of our efforts together made a difference. As our days get shorter and the season turns to fall, it is a nice time to try a few new activities or go on an outing. We will continue our walking club every Wednesday and try and make our mileage goal. I encourage you to try a new class, learn a language or try a new restaurant on an outing. Make connections with fellow residents through activities or classes. It is important to stay active and involved. Although the year is winding down, we won t be! Supporting the Alzheimer s Association. SURVEY TIME! Toward the end of the October/beginning of November you will be receiving the Resident and Family Satisfaction Survey in the mail. Please let us know how we are doing by filling out the survey and mailing it back. Every year we receive such wonderful feedback from our residents, family members and staff members. Thank you in advance for giving your honest feedback International Celebrations! DIRECTOR OF RESIDENT CARE AND SERVICES HEAL HINTS BY NERISSA LAGMAY National Depression Screening Day is held annually on the Thursday of the first full week in October. It is an educational and screening event that is conducted by hospitals, clinics and community groups nationwide. Much like the medical community screens for diabetes and high blood pressure, there is an offer to screen for mood disorders for the public. The focus is to identify mental disorders and seek help. Depression is a common and treatable mood disorder. Belmont Village conducts screening for Depression utilizing The Geriatric Depression Scale tool. This tool helps identify residents who may be in need of assistance and are suffering from depression. FACTS ABOUT DEPRESSION Depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 65. Depression affects more than 15 million American adults or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year. Only about half of Americans diagnosed with major depression receive treatment in a given year. Up to 80% of those who receive treatment for depression show an improvement in symptoms, usually within four to six weeks, of beginning of treatment. COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION ARE: Change in sleep habits Poor appetite Poor concentration Loss of energy Loss of interest in usual activities Low self esteem Hopelessness/guilt Recurring thoughts of death or suicide If you are feeling any of these symptoms, please reach out to your Belmont Village DRCS/nurse for assistance. Flu shots will be administered at Belmont Village on Tuesday, October 10th, from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. in the Town Hall. If you need additional information on the flu shot, please ask a nurse.
