Page 2 of 6 ACPSAA Newsletter // November 2013 Fall Service Project: Wreaths Across America Annapolis National Cemetery on West Street in Annapolis is the final resting place for 2200 United States war veterans that served our country as far back as the Civil War. There is no greater sacrifice than that given by each of these men and women and such sacrifice deserves to be honored! The Annapolis Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association is helping make that a reality, by purchasing wreaths that we will lay at each grave headstone this December. Our goal is to raise at least $1000; and at the writing of this article, we ve raised about 75% of that goal. Please join your fellow Chapter members and show your gratitude for the freedom that each of these brave men and women helped to provide. THEY DESERVE TO BE HONORED! Sponsor a wreath $15 = $30 = Any amount is accepted and appreciated. Cash &/or Check donations are being collected at our fall football parties at the Greene Turtle. Make a donation using PayPal via the payment link found on our Chapter website. Mail a check to: ACPSAA, PO Box 693, Arnold, MD 21012. Make the check payable to ACPSAA and write 2013 fall service project on the memo line. Get Active -- Volunteer Provide an hour s labor helping unload wreaths upon their delivery December 9 th, 10 th or 11 th at Annapolis National Cemetery (specific day TBA). Help lay wreaths at the gravesites and join the ceremony at Annapolis National Cemetery on Saturday, December 14 th at noon. Volunteer an hour or two in mid-january to help remove the spent wreaths from the cemetery. (Day and time TBA.) If you have questions about the Fall Service Project or need more information about making a donation or volunteering, contact Scott Davis, Project Chairman at clydescott@gmail.com. Did you know that Annapolis National Cemetery is one of 14 national cemeteries established in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln? Page 3 of 6 ACPSAA Newsletter // November 2013 CHAPTER PICNIC AN ANNUAL SUMMER HIT! Over sixty people including 15 local Penn State students and their families - attended our 16 th Annual Chapter Picnic on August 18 at the Severna Park Elks club. Each student received a goodie bag of school supplies and some sage advice from our student mentors about surviving the first weeks on campus. While the students got the 4-1-1 about campus life, the rest of us enjoyed conversation and played a few games including our own special Nittany Lion version of Bingo with winners receiving Penn State prizes. The Chapter would like to express special thanks to this year s student mentors: Hope Brooks, Andrew D Aversa, Bryan Gardiner, Melanie Morone and Michael Steel. Special request: We are always looking for recent alumni to serve as student mentors at our picnic. If you are (or you know of) a Penn Stater who has graduated within the last five years, please let us know! He or she does not need to be a chapter member. Why not plan to join us next August!

Page 6 of 6 ACPSAA Newsletter // November 2013 WE ARE... SOCIAL CHAPTER HAPPY HOURS The chapter holds happy hours at a different local venue each month. They are usually (but not always) on the first Thursday of the month. Happy Hours are a great way to relax with your fellow Penn Staters after a hectic work day/week/month. Why not join in, engage in thought-provoking discussion, share ideas, and be social with us? WE ARE... A GROUP OF DISTINCTION We are proud to announce that the Penn State Alumni Association has named our chapter a Group of Distinction for 2013. To become a Group of Distinction, an affiliate group must meet a number of criteria, including being actively involved in such areas as student support and interaction, networking and fellowship, sports activities, community service projects, membership support and recruitment, communications, volunteer awards program, Alumni Leadership Connections, Homecoming, and THON-related events. This is our 9 th year to be so honored and we will be recognized in an upcoming edition of the Penn Stater Magazine. To mark this significant accomplishment, we received another patch for our banner. Thanks for making our chapter so great! WE ARE... EVERYWHERE! I was shocked how many stopped me on the ship to talk PSU!! Chapter Member Debbie Risher shows her Penn State pride in Greece during her recent vacation cruise! Be sure to check our web page and Facebook page for times and locations. If you renew your chapter membership, you will receive e-mail reminders of upcoming happy hours and all other chapter events. Have a favorite pub? Send us a quick email and let us know about it. Who knows, maybe your favorite will become a new Chapter favorite! Email: psuannapolis@gmail.com Web: http://www.psualum.com/chapter/annapolis Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acpsaa Holiday Party!
