Last summer, the Library was awarded $91,243 to support literacy in a Community Library Partnership Pilot Grant issued by the NJ Department of Labor. That grant concluded in June 2017. We are proud to announce that, in partnership with Literacy New Jersey, we will receive $93,980 for literacy projects starting this September. What does that mean for you? A lot of learning opportunities, including: Conversation groups for non-english speakers Additional literacy materials added to our collection High-school equivalency classes for adults who never received a diploma Supervised open computer lab Funding for our online databases, including World Book Online, Learning Express and Pronunciator Classroom supplies, including white boards, collapsible tables and more stackable chairs. Last year 45 students received a high-school equivalency diploma, thanks to this funding. This year, will you be one of those students?? Since the introduction of bee hives at our Elmora Library Garden and the adjacent Community Garden, there have been expressions of fear about the bees. Regular visitors and volunteers at the gardens have notice that the bees pay little heed to people but steadily go about their business of collecting nectar. If you worry that this bee activity is hardly worth the anxiety they cause, just take a look at the produce we re harvesting! Rain is a necessity, and so is sunshine, but the bees make the difference between a so-so harvest and one that is astounding. And this year s crops are astounding! Bees rule! Thank you, bees! We thank our partners, Literacy New Jersey. previously worked at libraries in Illinois, Ohio, Texas and Jose Ruiz-Alvarez joined the staff of the Connecticut, he Elizabeth Public Library in May 2009, as continues his Circulation Manager Librarian. Library assistants Sheila O Brien and Maria Aldo Lopez appreciate the new layout at the LaCorte branch! With support from a grant from the New Jersey State Library, the Library has been able to move the staff desks to a more central and functional location. Watch for more changes in coming months, including new carpeting. In addition to the Librarian team from the State Library, we thank our own Edwin Lopez from IT and Paulo Goulart from Maintenance for the manpower that implemented the changes. Great work, everyone! Maria praises the new layout for the way it has created more space for children s programming. Please visit our LaCorte Branch in the Peterstown Community Center!
