MEDICAL ASSISTANT SUMMARY OF JOB FUNCTION The Medical Assistant (MA) functions under the direct supervision of the physician/provider when performing clinical tasks during patient care. The Medical Assistant reports directly to the clinic coordinator/manager, who is responsible for administrative supervision, staff development, and orientation of the MA to the area s policies and procedures and department guidelines. The MA must demonstrate competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care. The MA maintains an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety. As a team member in Patient Centered Medical Home, the MA collaborates with clinic management, nursing, and clerical staff to maintain high standards of patient care with the patient at the center. ESSENTIAL JOB FUCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provides excellent customer service in a sensitive and non-judgmental manner (patients and coworkers). 2. Uses GFHN Practice Management System to document patient care information, and receive task from clinicians. 3. Prepares for visit by gathering patient information such as results of labs, reports, referrals for the clinician. 4. Keeps pace with provider flow and is attuned to efficiency in patient cycle times. 5. Prepares patients for examination by accurately obtaining and documenting in Practice Management System the chief complaints, vital signs, blood pressure, measurements in heights, weights, pain scale, allergies, smoking status, oximeter reading, and other required fields. 6. Reconcile/Compares and confirms medications with patient s Practice Management System Medication List. 7. Assists clinician and patient during all the exam/treatments, provides translation and other assistance as needed. Chaperones male clinicians examining female patients or female clinicians examining male patients as needed. 8. Collects vital signs (temp, BP, weight, pulse, etc.) per protocols. 9. Works as an effective team member to maintain the efficient patient flow and the work flow. 10. Performs procedures/treatments/tests per clinician s instructions/standing orders to include breathing treatments, ear washes, etc as trained and as needed. 11. Ensures provider s orders are understood, clarifies/repeats instructions for patients, and reviews exit summary with patient. 12. Assists with office procedures such as monitoring patient flow in accordance with clinicians schedules, telephone screening and follow-up calls, obtains messages for nurses or clinicians with accurate information about the patient. 13. Cleans and sets up rooms in preparation for exams. Monitors exam rooms for adequate supplies and stocks supplies as needed. 14. Performs venipuncture as it relates to CLIA Waiver lab blood draws as needed. 15. Prints patient s immunization record from CAIR System and brings to clinicians attention to review record on the appointment date, to prevent vaccine errors. 16. Administers vaccines using the seven rights of medication administration, including confirming patient s ID. To prevent vaccine error, the medical assistant will routinely go through the seven rights every time on medication administration without fail. 17. Instructs patients about simple procedures/tests, give educational materials to patients to better understand the procedure or diagnosis. Explain procedures that are performed by an MA to patient such as EKG.
18. Performs follow up care activities per clinician or nurse instructions and process clinician orders received via in box 19. Is prepared to work in all clinics and clinical nursing areas as assigned by the Nursing Dept. depending upon staffing needs including reassignment and cross training. The Medical Assistant is hired for GFHN and must be willing to be reassigned to another clinic to meet staffing needs. 20. Actively participates in Daily Medical Team Huddles, Organization/Department/Team meetings, and the Emergency Response Team as needed by providing constructive input and facilitating problem-solving. 21. Completes daily check list of glucose meters and oxygen tanks. 22. Run sterilization unit to assure instruments ready to be reused following current procedure. Familiar with sterilization to include running spores test, refrigerator/freezer, eye wash station logs, and other instruments identified in the Medical Assistant Policy and Procedure Guidebook. 23. Mentors new Medical Assistant Employees, allowing shadowing time and demonstrating procedures/ responsibilities of daily tasks. This is to assure that the new employee is well integrated into the medical team 24. Disposition of contaminated waste 25. Attends trainings or other professional activities to maintain professional standards 26. Performs other related work and comparable duties required as trained. 27. Projects a professional image at all times, including adherence to dress code and standards of communication. 28. Participates in staff/department/ meetings/huddles 29. Identifies opportunities for performance improvement and provides input for development of solutions. 30. Perform all duties in accordance with the Medical Assistant Training Policy and Procedures Guidebook (located at each site station). 31. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times 32. Maintains a positive attitude and treats all patients and staff with courtesy, professionalism, and respect. REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS Strong interpersonal skills Ability to work in a fast pace environment Ability to understand and adhere to department goals, standards, policies, and procedures, which may include some familiarity of other departments within Gardner.
Excellent communication skills Proficiently uses Immunization Registry (CAIR). Strong computer skills High School graduate or equivalent. Medical Assistant Certificate from an approved Medical Assistant program as required by GFHN. CPR Certified. Experience working in a community clinic setting is preferred but not required Bilingual/Second language proficiency (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, etc.). It is imperative to demonstrate courtesy and respect to clinicians, nurses, co-workers, patients and clients. Interact in a courteous helpful manner with patients, clients and staff. Work effectively with a diverse population and positively in a teamwork environment. Team Oriented Approached Strong Computer skills (online eligibility, insurance websites, MS office) Experience with EMR/EHR systems (Epic, NextGen, etc.) PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. Reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Ability to sit at a desk or computer prolonged period of time. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Works inside & outside including motor vehicle travel between sites.
