Do you want a fun and easy way to get in shape this spring? Then the fourweek Step To It Challenge from May 1 May 28 is for you! Get active with your community! The long winter has kept many of us inside and caused a case or two of cabin fever. But spring is just around the corner so it s time to break free from winter and get active! This fun, free, four-week challenge encourages all residents to be physically active as local communities engage in a friendly competition. Bragging rights will go to the three communities that are the most active. Individual participants also have a chance to win Twins tickets and Step To It T-shirts. Individuals, including the over 65 crowd with the most steps from each of the 24 participating communities will also have the opportunity to be on field before a Twins home game during the 2017 season. How does it work? As a Step To It participant, you will keep an ongoing total of the steps you take during the challenge. Using an activity conversion chart at www.steptoit.org, other activities such as biking, skateboarding, Tai Chi, or even just mowing the lawn can count toward overall steps. Our Web site will allow you to record your steps online, or your step total can be called in or faxed. Best of all, it s FREE! Registration begins April 1. Register by going to the Step To It Challenge Web site at www.steptoit.org.

AQUATICS PROGRAM 2017 SUMMER BROCHURE Page 7 Swim Lessons Michele Gerstner, Aquatics & Adaptive Recreation Program Manager, mgerstner@eminnetonka.com 952.939.8323 The goal of the aquatics program is for the student to continually make progress with each class. Each class is structured to build on the skills learned in the previous class. A student who does not possess the minimum skills required for the class enrolled will hinder the progress of the other students as well as his or her own, and will not be allowed to continue. To ensure your child has the best swim lesson experience through our aquatics program, we periodically review and make adjustments to the program to best accommodate students of all levels. Younger children are encouraged to repeat a class for more than one session. Instructors will strive to challenge the child throughout the lessons. Locker Room Policy at West and North Jr. High: To protect the privacy of our participants, children 5 years of age and older may not enter the locker room of the opposite sex. Please plan accordingly when registering for swim lessons and use discretion when bringing younger children of the opposite sex into the locker room. Pool Temperature at West!: Please be aware that the water temperature at West Junior High is cooler than at Williston Fitness Center. A snug-fitting swim shirt is highly recommended. If your child does well with fewer distractions, West would be a good choice. Swim Policy: Parents may only register a student(s) for one swim class per session. Advancement to the next level is contingent upon the instructor s recommendation. Additionally, online registrations are closely monitored on a daily basis to ensure adherence to this policy. Waiting Lists: Please request to be placed on a specific waitlist when your desired aquatic class fills. Staff will contact you as openings occur due to cancellations, or when new classes are added. Transfer Fee: If your child has been registered in an incorrect level and you wish to transfer to a different level, there is an additional $35 fee charged to transfer provided there are still spots available. Avoid transfer fees by attending one of our FREE level assessments so our staff can place your child at their correct level. Level Assessment Unsure of your child s swimming skill? Register for a free 5-minute assessment and let our swim instructors determine the appropriate swim level for your child in our program. Pre-registration is required for assessments held at the Williston Fitness Center pool. Please have your child in a swimming suit and ready to go on the pool deck at their designated time. Recommended for children who have not had swim lessons for more than 3 months. Swim instructors are available to evaluate and recommend the appropriate level for your child by appointment on the dates and times listed below. Please call (952) 939-8203 to register or visit www.eminnetonka.com/register. Assesment schedule For SUMMER SESSION I, SUMMER SESSION II and FALL SESSION 1 on next page

Swim diapers need to be worn in the pools. This class may be repeated more than once. Tadpole (Ages 3 5): This class introduces the child to structured lessons with an emphasis on having a fun and comfortable experience. They will work on getting face wet and working with an instructor. The pace is gentle and slow with very basic skills taught through games and songs. No prior swimming lessons required. Frog (Ages 4 & over): Class structure is designed to help students feel comfortable and enjoy the water while having fun. They will work on supported floats, be introduced to immersing face in water and much more. No prior swimming lessons required. Octopus (Ages 4 & over): Student will continue to work on the fundamentals of the front and back stroke using a combined arm/leg motion (with assistance and putting face in). The desired outcome is for the student to be comfortable with less instructor assistance. Prerequisite: Blowing bubbles and comfortable with instructor assistance. Sea Turtle (Ages 4 & over): Student will continue to work on the front crawl and back crawl with the goal of being able to float independently. Prerequisite: Must be comfortable doing assisted front float (face in) as well as assisted back float (head back, ears in). Jellyfish (Ages 4 & over): Student will continue to work on the front crawl and back crawl and will achieve more independence. The goal is to be able to swim 10 yards (1/4 of pool length) using basic front crawl technique (face in and a continuous forward motion using combined arm and leg motion). Elementary back stroke is introduced. Prerequisite: Independent front (face in) and back float. Angelfish (Ages 5 & over): The main emphasis is on rotary breathing. The main goal is that the student be able to swim ½ length of the pool, continuously, while being able to demonstrate the understanding of rotary breathing and alternating arm/leg motion. Continue to work on elementary backstroke. Prerequisite: Be able to swim ¼ length of the pool, continuously, while demonstrating an understanding of the alternating arm/leg motion. Face must be in water. Stingray (Ages 5 & over): Continued emphasis on rotary breathing. Student will continue to work on front crawl and back stroke with goal of swimming 3/4 length of the pool independently. Student needs to be able to swim continuously while demonstrating an understanding of rotary breathing and alternating arm/leg motion.prerequisite: Be able to swim ¼ length of pool, continuously, with front and back crawl. Student will need to be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic rotary breathing while using an alternating arm/leg motion. The strike paved the way for the organization of over-the-road drivers and the growth of the Teamsters labor union. These cherty iron ore deposits are Precambrian in age for the Vermilion Range, while middle Precambrian in age for the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges. Natural ores and concentrates were produced from 1848 until the mid 1950s. Then taconites and jaspers were concentrated and pelletized and started to become the major source of iron production. Although there were several competing theories as to the etiology of the Black Death, analysis of DNA from victims in northern and southern Europe indicates that the pathogen responsible was the yesinia pestis bacterium. The war pitted the colonies of British America against those of New France, with both sides supported by military units from their parent countries of Great Britain and France, as well as by Native American allies. Fighting took place primarily along the frontiers between New France and the British colonies, from Virginia in the south to Newfoundland in the north. The dispute erupted into violence during which Virginia militiamen under the command of 22-year-old George Washington ambushed a French patrol. History: Seven Years War The Seven Years War was a war fought between 1754 and 1763. The main conflict occurring in the seven-year period from 1756 to 1763 involved every European great power of the time except the Ottoman Empire, spanning five continents, and affecting Europe, the Americas, West Africa, India, and the Philippines. The conflict split Europe into two coalitions, led by the Kingdom of Great Britain on one side and the Kingdom of France on the other. For the first time, aiming to curtail Britain s and Prussia s ever-growing might, France formed a grand coalition of its own. This, however, ended in failure when the Anglo-Prussian coalition prevailed. Britain s rise as the world s predominant power destroyed France s supremacy in Europe, altering the European balance of power. General George Washington sought quarters for his men with winter almost setting in, and with greatly diminishing prospects for campaigning. Washington and his troops had fought in early December what was the last major engagement of 1777. He devised to pull his troops from their present encampment in the White Marsh area (now Fort Washington State Park) and move to a more secure location for the coming winter at Valley Forge. The economic, social and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding ethnicity, economic benefits, jobs for nonimmigrants, settlement patterns, impact on upward social mobility, crime and voting behavior. In 2005, the United States per capita ranked 34 th out of 179 world nations in the number of immigrants allowed into the country.
