Ms. Bush was recognized through a statewide nominating process. Congratulations and many thanks to Ernestyne Bush, said Chief Executive Officer Robert J. Groves. Her dedication, enthusiasm and donation of time are a shining example of how one individual can make a tremendous difference to our organization. Ms. Bush has been an active member and volunteer of Philadelphia Senior Center since 1992. She has been on the Advisory Council for eight years, serving as president for six. Under her leadership, the council funded the installation of new lighting in program areas, and automatic flushing toilets in the bathrooms. In January of 2007, she was elected to the board of directors. Additionally, she serves on the development, the Coffee Cup Exhibition, and the bazaar committees. She also facilitates one of PSC s largest and oldest classes. Through her volunteer efforts, Ms. Bush has raised thousands of dollars for capital improvements and general operations. She can be found sitting in the lobby greeting the members as they walk through PSC s doors, organizing a bus trip for her peers, or working tirelessly on behalf of her senior center. Ms. Bush donated 700+ hours of community service to PSC in the last year, and 2,000+ hours since 2003. The Award recognizes an individual or organization that has, through direct involvement, made a positive impact on a senior center. As part of the award, Ms. Bush received a $200 cash prize that she designated to PSC.

Greetings Happy New Year and welcome to Philadelphia Senior Center 2008 edition. I hope everyone had a happy and positive holiday season. We are entering the fifty-ninth year of PSC s existence. In 2009 we will celebrate 60 years of service a truly great milestone! We remain the largest senior center in Pennsylvania and the third oldest in the entire United States. PSC has always been a leader. We have had the foresight and courage to step forward with ideas, plans and programs that meet the community s needs. This past October, PSC s Board of Directors adopted a new strategic plan to guide our future. Once again ideas, plans and programs this time to meet the needs of a new century and the explosion of the older adult population. Did you know that in Philadelphia there is only one population group expected grow between now and 2015? That group is adults age 55 and older. All other age groups are expected to decrease in size. As part of our Strategic Plan we have new vision and mission statements. Our Vision: For PSC to be Greater Philadelphia s resource for ideas, programs and services that enrich the lives of people 55 and older. Our Mission: To advance the well being and personal growth of all persons age 55 and older in Greater Philadelphia by providing services and resources so that they might learn, grow and discover new ways of being actively involved in living. In other words, we intend to be the go to organization for anyone seniors and their families, professional staff, board members, funders who want to be on cutting of edge of life enrichment for older adults. We will be introducing some new programs while always working to maintain and improve our current activities. In 2008, look for some new initiatives such as an expansion of volunteer opportunities through the Ready to Serve community service program. Stay tuned for more details. I want to thank all who generously gave financial or volunteer support through our recent annual Friends Campaign or in any other ways such as the great bazaar we had in December and the terrific holiday events of 2007. All of our events and fundraisers of any kind work toward the same goals the security and improvement of PSC. I am eager to move forward together with all of you in 2008. HOME IMPROVEMENT LOANS AVAILABLE FOR SENIORS The PHI-Plus and Mini-PHIL Home Improvement Loan Programs help Philadelphia homeowners with less than perfect credit obtain money to make emergency repairs or to do small projects or large repairs. The left over funds can be used to pay off existing debt. With the PHIL-Plus Loan, an individual may borrow up to $25,000 and have up to 20 years to repay the loan. Individuals can apply for a 1 percent rate reduction after 24 consecutive on time monthly payments. The Mini-PHIL offers the individual up to $10,000 and terms up to 10 years, along with a fixed interest rate. No equity in property is required for either loan and there are no bank fees, a free property inspection is provided of completed work. Project COPE Are You Caring for a Relative with Memory Loss? Is your relative agitated, bored, depressed, or exhibiting other problem behaviors? Thomas Jefferson University is looking for family caregivers to participate in Project COPE, research designed to help caregivers learn new ways to manage challenging behaviors of Alzheimer s disease and related disorders. All participants receive payment for in-home and telephone interviews. Participation does not affect services received through other agencies. Funded by the Pennsylvania State Department of Health as part of the Pennsylvania Center of Excellence in Alzheimer s Disease at the Farber Institute for Neurosciences. We will be operating under the buddy system. A buddy can be any adult, a member or nonmember or a fellow workout partner and they must be present while you workout.
