4 THKMS Annual Report 2015 THYE HUA KWAN MORAL SOCIETY CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE 2015 was an eventful year for the nation and for all of us at Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (THKMS). In the spirit of the SG50 jubilee celebrations, THKMS organised many inaugural events to commemorate our jubilee year. We highlighted Singapore s cultural diversity through the SG50 Harmony Wok, SG50 Harmony Road Trip as well as the record-breaking SG50 Harmony Swing where 3578 participants came together to set the record for the Largest Zumba Dance in the Singapore Book of Records. These efforts would not have been successful without the tremendous support of our partners, volunteers and the community. These events paved the way to the 12th Inter Racial Inter Religious Harmony Nite held in July 2015. With the collective effort from the community, we collected more than 78,500 handmade paper butterflies that set the record for the Largest Display of Paper Butterflies in Singapore Book of Records. The gracefulness of butterflies represents the harmony that we enjoy as one - Singaporeans, regardless of race, language, colour, creed or religion. Racial and religious harmony continues to be the fundamentals for Singapore s progress and prosperity. In October 2015, THKMS successfully tendered for the land Mr Lee Kim Siang, BBM(L) Chairman Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society site in Fernvale for the construction of a Chinese Temple. The Temple will not only be a place for religious practices but also an avenue to facilitate interfaith dialogue and understanding through constructive interaction. This is especially important role in the light of global unrest in recent years as a result of religious conflict and extremism. The 2,000 sq m, 30-year leasehold site is expected to be ready by 2019. The volunteer management unit of Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities also launched a new initiative known as the THK Aviators to attract, engage and retain our volunteers, They aim to create a meaningful and sustainable impact in the lives of those we serve. Preparations are also underway for the new THK Nursing Home in Hougang, which will be operational by the third quarter of 2016. The facility will add to our realm of eldercare services to meet the growing demands of an ageing population. Ang Mo Kio-Thye Hua Kwan Hospital will also embark on the subsequent phases of its expansion plan in 2016 to enhance its infrastructure. As we look forward to an exciting year ahead, we are thankful for our donors, partners and other stakeholders who have contributed to our cause one way or another. Together, let us continue to do more for the good of Singapore, Our Home.

24 THKMS Annual Report 2015 OUR SUBSIDIARIES ANG MO KIO - THYE HUA KWAN HOSPITAL From left: Minister for Health Mr Gan Kim Yong, Nurse Educator, Ms Jocelyn Ng, President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Mrs Mary Tan and Chief Nursing Officer, Ministry of Health, Ms Tan Soh Chin during the presentation of the President s Award for Nurses AMK-THKH NURSE EDUCATOR, MS JOCELYN NG WINS PRESIDENT S AWARD FOR NURSES 2015 Ms Jocelyn Ng Ling Hui, Nurse Educator at Ang Mo Kio Thye Hua Kwan Hospital (AMK-THKH) was one of the seven nurses to receive the prestigious President s Award for Nurses from President Tony Tan Keng Yam at the Istana on July 31. She is also the only nurse from the Intermediate and Long Term Care Sector (ILTC) to receive the award this year. The award is a fitting testament to a career that began 15 years ago, when her grandfather was admitted to Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital, as it was called then. I was greatly inspired by the team of nurses who spent time helping my forlorn grandfather build up his confidence. I could see that their inspirational words and their sincere care for my grandfather perceptibly improve his outlook. This combination of their professional expertise along with their heartfelt care for patients made me decide that this was the profession for me, shared Jocelyn. This initial experience has been an important guiding principle in her daily professional life. They made me understand that one needs be passionate about nursing care and about people to provide the best possible care to patients, shared Jocelyn. Today, as a Nursing Officer who designs and implements continuing education programmes for nurses, Jocelyn is now a mentor, sharing her experiences and professional expertise with junior and aspiring nurses. The President Award for Nurses, which started in 2000, recognises nurses for their contributions to education, leadership, research and administration in the field of Nursing and is the highest accolade for the profession in Singapore.

Ms Siti Fauziah Binte Rahman, Nursing Officer at Ang Mo Kio-Thye Hua Kwan Hospital were among the award recipients. She is currently pursuing her degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing at La Trobe (Sydney) University and specialises in dementia care and wound care in the elderly. Sister Fauziah made a career switch in 2006 after working as a laboratory analyst. I feel proud that every day in my life as a nurse, I am able to give the care and motivate the patients. Seeing them smile and thanking us from the bottom of their heart is something that money can t buy. I am always happy to be the inspiration of my fellow nurses as they go through their daily challenges of being a nurse, and a friend to them outside of work. THKMS Annual Report 2015 25
