Committee Reports June 2011 Awards No Report this month Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium 1000 Westgate Drive Suite 252 Saint Paul, MN 55114 www.mngislis.org Conference Committee Report Conference planning is moving quickly and on schedule. The Session s Committee is finalizing the sessions being offered. We had a great selection of high quality abstracts this year. The Workshops Committee is offering 14 workshops including 2 full day and12 ½ day workshops. The preliminary program is being finalized and should be complete this week. Tami will present the conference budget at the August Board meeting. The Conference Committee will meet in Saint Cloud in July. Database Committee No report this month MnGeo State Government Geospatial Advisory Council A Council meeting was held Tuesday, May 31 st at the Centennial Office Building, St. Paul from 10:00-Noon. Fred Logman reviewed the 2011 Legislative Session Nancy Rader did a presentation on the new Outreach Committee. Fred Logman led a discussion on how MnGeo Committees and Workgroups facilitate with MnGeo on Projects Reporting and Communications that they are doing. Nancy Rader did a presentation on the new Metadata Workgroup. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, July 12 th at the Centennial Office Building, St. Paul from 10:00-Noon. MnGeo Statewide Geospatial Advisory Council The next meeting will be held Thursday, June 30 th at the Metropolitan Counties Government Center, St. Paul from 1:00-4:00pm. All meetings of both councils are open to the public and meeting materials and presentations are posted online. For more info, see: http://www.mngeo.state.mn.us/councils/index.html MnGeo More LiDAR: LiDAR is now available for Murray and Pipestone counties from DNR s FTP site. See the MN Elevation Mapping Project webpage for more about the DNR-managed project: www.mngeo.state.mn.us/committee/elevation/mn_elev_mapping.html Newsletter Summer issue: Articles will be to Gerry the week of June 20, for publishing online in mid- July. Fall issue: Deadline will be August 15, for publication in late September.

Help for authors: The new document, How to Write an Article for Mn GIS/LIS News, will soon be posted on the Consortium s website. Proposal to change to 3 issues: The Newsletter Committee is proposing to publish the newsletter 3 times per year rather than 4 according to the following schedule: Issue Article Deadline Publication Winter/Spring end of January mid March Summer beginning of May mid-june Fall mid-august late September Given everyone s increasing workload, it has become too much to produce 4 issues per year. The busiest time of the year is the October conference and the November and December holidays, so we re proposing to give the News a rest then. Three issues seems sufficient to get non-breaking news to our readers (and it s the number we used to produce when the newsletter was printed and mailed). Any news that needs to get out more quickly can be sent via e-announcement. We would allow 3 weeks between the first call for articles and the deadline; during that time, we d send two call for articles e-announcements (3 weeks in advance and 1 week in advance). We re streamlining the editing and formatting steps so that they can be done in 4 weeks from deadline to time sent to Gerry; this allows 2 weeks for Gerry to format for the website. The exact dates would be set each year so that they fall on workdays. Outreach Committee As of June 15 th, there are 82 members on the Consortium s LinkedIn page and 158 members on our Facebook page. Professional Development Committee Spring Workshops Update Meeting Agenda Item Scholarship We currently have 12 of 13 Student Scholar named by their respective schools. Fond du Lac is still searching for a student. Elizabeth had some questions about eligibility that needed to be sorted out. We hope to hear from them soon. The University of Minnesota has submitted an Undergraduate representative. A letter asking for raffle prize donations went out with conference mailings to vendors. We have not heard from any vendors at this time. Proceeds from the 2011 Beer Tasting will go towards the Scholarship Fund. We ve reached out to Steve Benson regarding planning of the event. Scholarship committee has worked with the conference committee and it was agreed that a scholarship raffle at the conference will be the main fund raiser in 2011.
