East Baton Rouge Sheriff s Office East Baton Rouge Sheriff s Office Sheriff Speaks At Teen Town Hall Meeting July 201 4 Inside this issue: Deputy Of The Month 2 Congratulations 3 In The Community 4 Birthdays 5 Upcoming Events 6 Sheriff Sid Gautreaux led a panel discussion about violence as part of the Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination (BRAVE) program s community outreach efforts. Students from Mayor's Youth Employment Program, which includes about 100 students from across the parish and from different socioeconomic environments submitted questions to the panel about violence and the BRAVE program s efforts to reduce crime in designated areas of Baton Rouge. BRAVE is based upon Project Ceasefire, a program that has proven effective in reducing serious violent crimes in cities across the country.
DEPUTIES OF THE MONTH Jennifer Phillips, of the Finance and Budget Division, has been named the Civil Deputy of the Month and Briant Beard, of the Grants Division, has been named the Administrative and Support Services Deputy of the Month. Recently the EBRSO was selected by the Governor s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for an audit of our Public Assistance and Homeland Security Grant Programs. Briant and Jennifer exemplify the words teamwork and professionalism. Working together. Briant handling the grant administration and Jennifer handling the grant financial recording and reporting, the Sheriff s Office passed this audit with flying colors. Briant and Jennifer uphold the highest standards in their work and are a great reflection of the teamwork and professionalism for which the Sheriff s Office is known. Deputy Diana Wales, of the K-9 Division, has been named the Detectives and Special Operations Deputy of the Month. Deputy Wales was hired by the EBRSO in July of 2010. She joined the K-9 Division in January of 2012. On June 13, 2014, Deputy Wales assisted BRPD Sex Crimes Division and EBRSO General Investigations Division by translating during the interview of a Hispanic male suspect wanted for questioning in regards to a rape investigation. During the interview, it was discovered that the subject had not only committed the crime under investigation, but also another rape that had also occurred and was in search of his next victim. Deputy Wales assisted in getting this subject off of the streets. Deputy Justin Owens, of the Gardere Substation, has been named the Uniform Patrol Deputy of the Month. Deputy Owens was hired in April of 2012 in Uniform Patrol. On June 9, 2014, Deputy Owens responded to an EMS call in regards to an overdose. Upon learning where the synthetic marijuana was purchased, he notified Narcotics. A search warrant was performed several days later and 218.1 pounds of synthetic marijuana and cash in the amount of $34,304.00 was seized. Deputy Owens played a large part in the recovery of these items. Deputy Brad Oliver has been named the Corrections Deputy of the Month. Deputy Oliver was hired by the Parish Prison in December of 2010. On May 28, 2014, Deputy Manchester s attention to detail and diligence prevented contraband from entering the prison. While searching an inmate from Work Release, Deputy Oliver discovered a cell phone, a pack of cigarettes, $150 cash, a credit card, and a lighter hidden in a false bottom of his shoe. The inmate was rebooked for trying to enter contraband into a penal institution.
