Position Description Executive Director of Mission 1. THE ORGANISATION AND OUR MISSION St Vincent s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) is a leading teaching, research and tertiary health service, which employs more than 5,000 staff across 18 sites throughout Melbourne. Part of Australia's largest not-for-profit Catholic health and aged care network, St Vincent's Health Australia, SVHM provides a diverse range of adult clinical services including acute medical and surgical services, sub-acute care, medical diagnostics, rehabilitation, allied health, mental health, palliative care, correctional health and community residential care. SVHM's mission is to provide high quality and efficient health services to the people of Victoria in accordance with the philosophy of St Vincent s Health Australia. This mission is based on the values of compassion, justice, integrity and excellence. 2. KEY POSITION DETAILS Job Title: Reports to: Program: Industrial Agreement: Executive Director of Mission Chief Executive Officer Office of the CEO Executive Classification Classification: Executive Level 5 3. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Executive Director of Mission will be based at the Fitzroy campus. This role oversees the mission education of St Vincent's staff so that mission is integrated into St Vincent's across all operations and services and across all sites thought out Melbourne. 4. POSITION PURPOSE The Executive Director of Mission is accountable for the leadership and strategic direction of a full range of Mission activities across St Vincent s Hospital Melbourne. The position has executive responsibility to contribute to the organisational strategic plan and to provide advice to the staff of the health service, particularly the executive team, in order to ensure the Catholic ethos of STV is maintained. The Executive Director will lead and inspire a dedicated team to deliver excellence in patient outcomes and care and develop and implement actions to support the delivery of the SVHM Public Division Plan. The Executive Director will be an active member of the Executive team and the role model for demonstrating the mission and values of the organisation to staff and stakeholders. They will provide operational support to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and be responsible for acting as primary contact on behalf of the CEO for escalating within the Mission Directorate/Scope. 5. POSITION DUTIES Mission Service Provision Oversee all operations pertaining to mission including; formation, pastoral care, volunteers, archives, art program, aboriginal health, cultural diversity, Briar Terrace, the Good Samaritan Fund and including new or ongoing mission initiatives Lead and co-ordinate all STV significant mission driven staff events (e.g. blessings, openings, key milestone events) Lead and develop Mission formation programs for members of STV Executive, Heads of Department and all staff Conduct opening and blessing of new facilities, and celebrate key liturgical events Ensure Mission is integrated into all St Vincent's operations and activities Ensure St Vincent's staff feel confident working in a public Catholic hospital and that they understand and are inspired by the mission Demonstrate significant efforts towards address vulnerable patient groups by supporting Executive directors to implement opportunities through SVHA Inclusive Health Innovation Fund and other strategies.

Strategically develop, build and maintain safe and efficient best practice mission services that will meet the current and future needs of SVHM. This includes a constant focus on creating value from the perspective of our people, our patients, residents, clients and our customers Demonstrate and promote the application of structured problem solving to resolve cross functional, high profile and critical issues and improvement initiatives Resolve all operational and workforce issues across the directorate, escalating and providing advice on unresolved issues to Chief Executive Officer as required Ensure regulatory, accreditation and statutory requirements are met Ensure integration of mission, research and quality into all aspects of clinical care Shape the identity and culture of STV as a Catholic health service provider Advise on targeted social justice opportunities Clinical Governance Participate and lead in STV committees as requested by the CEO (Clinical Ethics [Sponsor], Community Advisory Committee, Research Endowment Fund, Cultural Diversity Committee [Sponsor], Research Ethics, Aboriginal Health, Art Gallery, Art & Aesthetics, Caroline Chisholm Centre for Health Ethics and others as requested) Participate in the SVHA Mission, Ethics and Advocacy Sub-Committee on a quarterly basis. Liaise on behalf of STV with other Catholic stakeholders (Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, Archdiocese of Melbourne, Catholic Health Australia, Catholic Social Services Victoria and Caroline Chisholm Centre for Health Ethics) Teaching, Education, Research and Collaboration Develop strong partnerships within St Vincent s Hospital Melbourne and St Vincent s Health Australia and externally between other government agencies, private sector and relevant organisations Provide a leadership role in establishing and maintaining effective communication with stakeholders at all levels, internally and externally Function effectively as part of the executive leadership team to work strategically and collaboratively with all disciplines across the organisation Conduct education events and presentations to STV staff to build mission into policy and practice, including Mission formation session at Orientation on a monthly basis. Support the complaint management process Business Planning Review the Directorates goals and strategies and formulate an annual operational plan in conjunction with direct reports and/or managers Develop targets and goals to achieve business imperatives articulate in operational plans. Identify, develop and implement new business opportunities for growth in collaboration with the CEO and Managers Advise on the development of an ethical framework for service delivery as required (e.g.: correctional health tender) Finance and Assets Ensure financial accountability and develop budgets pertaining to the Directorate including financial and activity planning and monitor activity levels against the agreed budget and targets Monitor business and grant funding priorities 6. INCUMBENT OBLIGATIONS General Actively promote the SVHM and SVHA to businesses and communities within the area. Ensure Mission is integrated into all aspects of clinical and community care Represent SVHM in key forums and activities for the purposes of increasing visibility and influence on policy and decision making that enhances services to our community. Research and report on performance improvement trends and emergent issues that may impact on SVHM and our strategic objectives. 3

Develop effective consultative mechanisms within the health sector to ensure stakeholders views are communicated and expectations are managed to achieve the objectives of SVHM. Clinical Quality and Safety Ensure the primary outcome of the continuous improvement strategy is the improvement of the quality and safety of clinical care. Person Centred Care Safety Ensure the patient centred care philosophy is core to the continuous improvement strategy Communicate health, safety and environmental policies and standards to key stakeholders and service providers to ensure compliance with SVHM policy and standards including fire safety and emergency management standards. Monitor awareness of and compliance with SVHM policies and standards and maintain a safe working environment. Report potential risks or breaches of policies or standards to SVHM personnel for action to remedy safety hazards or risks and restore a safe working environment. SELECTION CRITERIA 11.1 ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENCE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Theological qualifications Management qualifications or experience Knowledge of the Catholic Church, its language and culture The ability to appreciate and describe St Vincent s hospital as a ministry of the Catholic church 11.2 OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT Demonstrated extensive experience in senior leadership/executive management level roles within a demanding and diverse organisational environment Strong experience in leading a values-based team consistent and fostering values in a workforce through education, consultation and support Extensive verbal communications skills to effectively manage influence and interact constructively with stakeholders in the highest managerial levels of the public sector as well as at a consumer level Demonstrated written skills including experience in preparing comprehensive proposals, reports and presentations for dissemination to various stakeholders including senior management and Executive Officers across the organisation.
