Program Rationale: Pediatric and adolescent gynecology is an emerging subspecialty involving the collaborative efforts of health professionals from gynecology, general pediatrics, adolescent medicine, pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, and pediatric endocrinology. The gynecologic problems encountered in the pediatric and adolescent population are unique to this age group and involve skills differing from those utilized with an adult population. Presentation of common gynecologic problems in children and adolescents, evaluation and assessment techniques, and therapeutic management require a comprehensive understanding of embryology, hormonal physiology, and anatomy in the pediatric and adolescent patient and an educated vision of how pathology will impact future sexual and reproductive functioning. Program Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the appropriate indications for HPV vaccination in pediatric and adolescent patients 2. Evaluate risks associated with social networking and other high risk behaviors in adolescents 3. Explain why emergency contraception usage is important for sexually active adolescents 4. Summarize the clinical aspects of polycystic ovarian syndrome in adolescents and apply appropriate treatment measures when indicated Target Audience: Pediatricians, Gynecologists, Adolescent Medicine Specialists, Reproductive Endocrinologists, Pediatric Endocrinologists, Pediatric Urologists, Family Practitioners, Primary Care Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Registered Nurses Accreditation: North Shore LIJ Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide Continuing Medical Education for Physicians. Credit Designation: The designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nursing Credit: The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) will accept 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit as equal to 1.0 ANCC contact hour. Nurses should inquire with their specialty organizations and professional institutions as to their acceptance of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
