Simultaneous achievement of the NMC Outcomes and the L&D 9DI Unit: An outline for prospective candidates, managers and approved centres It s great to help people we know that. But it s not just patients that we can help. We can also help colleagues. Getting a qualification, for many people, is a great way to enhance their career or their self-esteem, or both. By becoming a qualified assessor and mentor, you can be part of that, and help people to develop in their careers. The previous situation Until recently, practitioners looking to enhance their career by taking on a workplace assessor and a mentoring role have had to achieve two entirely separate qualifications: The NMC require practitioners to undertake an approved mentorship programme which demonstrates achievement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Mentor outcomes. Practitioners must provide evidence of supporting and assessing student nurses or midwives who are undertaking the pre-registration programme. The National Approach to Mentor Preparation: core curriculum framework (NES 2007 ) provides a consistent national approach to preparing mentors to support learning and assessment. The SQA require practitioners to hold, or be working towards the assessor L&D 9DI Unit Assess Workplace Competence using Direct and Indirect Methods (formerly the A1 unit). Practitioners must provide evidence of qualifications e.g. Health and Care Support Workers (HCSW) The assessment component of the NMC Mentor Outcomes and the L&D 9DI Unit, do have some commonalty as they specifically cover the assessment of workplace competence. Practitioners wishing to achieve both qualifications have had to prove their competence using separate evidence sources (SVQ and Pre-registration programmes). This has in many ways extended their efforts unnecessarily and provided resource issues for managers. Now As a result of guidance developed in partnership between NHS Education for Scotland and the SQA, with representation from Higher and Further Education providers, practitioners will be able to gather evidence of their assessment practice from a single source - the assessment of student nurses undertaking the pre-registration programme. This evidence can be used to satisfy the requirements ¹ NHS Education for Scotland (2007) National Approach to Mentor Preparation for Nurses and Midwives: Core curriculum Framework. Edinburgh. of both the assessment component of the NMC Mentor Outcomes and the Unit L&D 9DI. Achieving the assessment component of the NMC Mentor Outcome does not mean that all of the requirements for L&D 9DI have been automatically met however the contribution towards the achievement of L&D 9DI is significant and the fuller guidance document available from the SQA website identifies the evidence that would be required to meet the full L&D 9DI Unit requirements. This development will provide opportunities for individuals to gain two awards simultaneously and allow for workforce development needs. It should be noted that the L&D 9DI Unit is also a Professional Development Award (PDA) in its own right. Single Unit or PDA options should be decided at the time of enrolment with the relevant approved centre. Practitioners who are embarking on NMC programmes of mentor preparation who already hold previous assessor qualifications such as D32/33 or the A1 Unit are considered qualified and therefore do not need to re-qualify. However, as a matter of good practice (and if assessing SVQs it is a requirement), practitioners should show that they are now practising to the new L&D9DI Standard. A CPD Tookkit in available on SQA s Website to facilitate this process. Experience mentors/assessors may use past valid evidence of assessment in relation to L&d9DI standard or may use evidence of current mentor activity. SQA awarding centres will ensure that you receive appropriate guidance and support. A guidance resource is available on the on the SQA website and links to this available on the NHS Education for Scotland website.www.nes.scot.nhs.uk Page 5

Process Outline For Practitioners Here s a brief outline of what practitioners need to do to achieve both qualifications: The NMC Mentor Outcomes Gain acceptance on a university Mentor Programme of Preparation. Identify who your Supervising Mentor will be - to support you in your quest to gain the NMC Mentor Outcomes. Apply for acceptance on both programmes Familiarise yourself with the qualifications The L&D 9DI Unit Gain acceptance with an L&D 9DI approved centre. Identify who will internally assess you. This could also be your Supervising Mentor (see diagram). Familiarise yourself with the NMC Mentor Outcomes and entry on to the local mentor register. Familiarise yourself with the L&D 9DI Unit Standard. Build experience and confidence in the standards of both qualifications Practice to the standards of the NMC Mentor Outcomes by using your teaching, supervision and assessment skills* in supporting the pre-registration Nursing and Midwifery students Practice to the L&D 9DI Unit Standard by using your planning, judgement and feedback skills* when assessing the Pre-registration Nursing Students * Note - same assessment skills Gain recognition for achieving both qualifications Gain recognition of achieving the NMC Mentor Outcomes* through assessment conducted by your Supervising Mentor. Gain recognition of achieving the L&D 9DI Unit Standard* through assessment conducted by your Supervising Mentor. *Note most of the L&D 9DI Unit Standard is embedded in the assessment component of the NMC Mentor Outcomes Page 6

The key role of the Supervising Mentor The processes for supporting a practitioner undertaking both NMC Mentor Outcomes and the A1 Unit If the Supervising Mentor is not eligible to assess the L&D 9DI Unit he/she will support the assessment process rather than be directly involved in conducting the assessment of the L&D 9DI unit. This can be done by helping the student mentor/assessor candidate to gather evidence towards achievement of L&D 9DI Unit. In this situation, assessment of L&D 9DI will be conducted by an approved L&D 9DI Assessor identified by the partner approved centre. If the Supervising Mentor meets the education provider and the Learning and Development assessment strategy requirements, the approved centre may ask the Supervising Mentor to also take on the role of the L&D 9DI Assessor. The roles of the NMC Supervising Mentor and the L&D 9DI Assessor could therefore be undertaken by the same person. Supervisor is currently a NMC mentor on the local mentor register? Assess NMC mentor outcomes Also a qualified L&D 9DI Assessor? No Relationship formed between Supervising NMC Mentor and the L&D 9DI Assessor Yes Verify the NMC Outcomes AND Assess the L&D 9DI Unit All supervising mentors will, however, act as internal verifiers for the clinical skills being assessed and evidenced by the student mentor/assessor candidate. This will allow the supervising mentor to gain a wider picture of the practitioner s overall competence whilst at the same time simplify the process of providing support and advice in relation to achieving both qualifications. for both qualifications. Page 7 Supervising NMC Mentor Verify the NMC Outcomes Assists the practitioner to gather evidence towards L&D 9DI under the guidance of the L&D 9DI Assessor L&D 9DI Assessor L&D 9DI Assessor liaises with Supervising NMC Mentor and conducts assessment of L&D 9DI

Advice to Service Managers It is still possible for practitioners to achieve the L&D 9DI Unit at a separate time from undertaking the NMC Mentor Outcomes if this suits the organisation, in which case the relevant L&D 9DI approved centre should be contacted to arrange enrolment. Where it has been identified that there is a need for the practitioner to gain their NMC Mentor Outcomes and the L&D 9DI Unit at the same time, line managers should be contacted and liaison with L&D 9DI approved centres should be initiated. This may be through their own organisation, local FE College or private provider. For more information Advice may be sought from SQA website, approved centres, Practice Development Units and NHS Education website Page 8
