RESUSCITATION TRAINING PROGRAMME APRIL-JUNE 2012 PLEASE READ THESE NOTES CAREFULLY All places must be booked in advance through the Resuscitation Training Dept. 1. Resuscitation training at an appropriate level, must be undertaken annually by all grades of staff that have clinical contact with patients. 2. Levels of Training (i) Basic Life Support with Airway Adjuncts (BLS) - 2 yearly For all medical, nursing staff and those in allied professions who have clinical contact with patients. (ii) Modified Immediate Life Support (MILS) - Annual Predominantly for qualified nursing staff. This session covers Basic Life Support, Advisory Defibrillation (AED), Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) insertion, how to check the cardiac arrest trolley and familiarises staff with equipment, drugs and advanced life support guidelines in order to initiate resuscitation and assist the cardiac arrest team. (iii) Immediate Life Support (ILS) Resuscitation Council (UK) Certificated - Annual Mandatory for cardiac arrest team members and other medical staff in acute areas. For qualified nursing staff, cardiac technicians, medical staff who may be required to lead a resuscitation and undertake these skills. This one day course covers Basic and Advanced Life Support guidelines and manual defibrillation. A 15 minute senario based assessment follows this training and must be completed within 4 weeks. (iv) Paediatric Life Support (PLS) 2 yearly Mandatory for all staff who have clinical contact with paediatrics. (v) Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) Resuscitation Council (UK) certificated Annual Predominantly for qualified Nursing Staff. This one day course covers Basic Life Support, recognition of the seriously sick child, paediatric emergency trolley and familiarises staff with advanced life support guidelines and calculations for weight, drugs, fluids and electricity. Attendance in Basic Life Support training can be attained at either levels 1, 2 or 3. Level 2 is recommended for qualified staff that require both basic and more advanced knowledge and skills. A core number of qualified nurses from all wards/depts should attend level 2, as this will provide each shift with a member of staff trained to initially lead the resuscitation, defibrillate, insert an LMA and assist the crash team. 2. Bookings All requests must be emailed to: resuscitation.training@rbch.nhs.uk Bookings will be confirmed by email. The Clinical Leader or Department Lead will be copied into all booking confirmation. Should you subsequently find that you are unable to attend, it is important that you inform the Resuscitation Training Dept. ` All DNA s will be followed up with the Clinical Leader of Department Lead 4. If you do not receive this you must contact the Resuscitation Training Dept. Precourse reading is essential for preparation of the course and to enable to you to successfully complete the day.

Collection of the pre-course pack from the Resuscitation Training Department confirms the place on a course. PTO Pre-course reading is essential in preparation for the course and to enable you to successfully complete it. It also provides information on both the outcome based assessments and the formal assessment that must be successfully completed. The assessment must be attended within 4 weeks of the ILS day. It will take approx 45 minutes to complete and a time will be arranged on the study day. It will include both practical and written (multiple choice) assessments. A Trust certificate of demonstrated competence and a Resuscitation Council (UK) certificate of attendance will be awarded following successful completion of the course and will be valid for 1 year. 6. NIGHT STAFF It would be appreciated if where at all possible, night staff could attend day time training sessions. However, evening sessions for groups of night staff can be arranged provided they are to be well attended. 7.
