Riedel Scholarship Competition, at the Naples Art Association: In 1971, members of the Naples Art Association initiated a scholarship program designed to encourage young aspiring artists to realize their dreams of becoming professionals in the visual arts. Since then, awards have been given annually by the NAA to Collier County high school students in conjunction with an exhibition of their work. Junior and senior high school students in Collier County, who are interested in furthering their art studies at the college level, eagerly participate in this competition for scholarships that help to defray student tuition costs. Southwest Florida Pastel Society Scholarship: This scholarship is for currently enrolled high school seniors. Three images of your work are to be submitted as jpegs via disk with no digital manipulation or enhancement. At least one of the images should be done in pastel, soft or oil pastel. An artist statement is to be included, along with artistic accomplishments, GPA, education plans and career goals. Include a copy of your acceptance letter from the school you are attending. The scholarship amount is $1,000.00. The deadline for the scholarship application is April 21, 2015. The application is to be sent to: Southwest Florida Pastel Society, P.O. Music Scholarships Naples Music Club The Naples Music Club Scholarship Program began in 1970 with one small grant awarded to a Collier County student for summer study. Since then, contributions from a generous community have made it possible to support 683 middle and high school students with more than $450,000. The competition categories are Brass, Woodwinds, Piano, Percussion, Strings, Guitar and Voice. Scholarships may be used for summer music camps, study with private teachers, instrument upgrade, or for college studies. The Turiel Award: The purpose of the award is to encourage recipients in the serious study of music. Each year, top competition winners who are seniors are invited to compete. The 2015 Haegg Award. The purpose of this special scholarship is to encourage students in grades 6-8 (Jr. Division) to study music with a private teacher for a period of one year. The 2015 Senior Division Scholarship Competition is restricted to those in Grades 9-12. The 2015 Junior Division Scholarship Competition is restricted to those in Grades 6-8. The applications to apply for the various scholarships are due on February 23, 2015. To apply on-line, go to naplesmusicclub.org/ scholarships/ The competition is Friday night, April 10 and Saturday, April 11 at Lely High School and participants will be contacted via e-mail of their audition time. The Winners Recital for the First Place and selected winners will be on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church, 1225 Piper Blvd, Naples. The concert will begin at 3:00 p.m. Voices of Naples Once again, Voices of Naples is offering up to $3,000 in vocal music scholarship awards to graduating seniors from Collier and Lee Counties who plan to pursue a college major associated with vocal music. The award is intended to encourage the student to continue the study of vocal music at a college or university. Over the past nine years, Voices of Naples has awarded over $30,000.00 in scholarships. Empty Bowl Event The Empty Bowl Event was held at Cambier Park on January 24, 2015. The $15.00 admission included your choice of a ceramic bowl and specialty soups. The bowls were made by high school students, art teachers, community members and professional artists. The Drum Line from Barron Collier High School performed. A silent auction of significant ceramic bowls designed by local artisans was held. Also, there were demonstrations by potters on how bowls are created on the potter s wheel. The funds raised from this event will be donated to the Harry Chapin Food Bank. In October a number of the art teachers met at Gulf Coast High School to learn new ways to work with clay. Some of these bowls were featured at the silent auction at the Empty Bowl 2014-15 CCPS Volunteer Program Art Contest The theme of this contest is to honor our volunteers who tirelessly work with our students. This year s theme will be centered on heart health and volunteering. Fifty pieces of art will be chosen and put on display at C MON, Golisano Children s Museum of Naples. The artwork must be exactly 11 x 14 finished which includes the mat board or tag board mounting. The artwork must be original and appropriate for family viewing. There is only one entry per student. The artwork is due by January 26, 2015. The artwork should be sent to: Communications and Community Engagement, Attn: Jennifer Lanza, Box 118. For further information, you can contact Jennifer at 377-0151 or via e-mail at lanzaj1@collierschools.com Delnor-Wiggins Pass Student Art Show On February 7 and 8, the Friends of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park will be displaying elementary student artwork at the Second Annual Children s Art Show. The goals of this event are to showcase the talents of our local students and to promote community aware- ness and enjoyment of the park. The art show is a juried show and the student s art will be divided into two levels for the competition: Kindergarten through Grade 2, and Grade 3 through Grade 5. There will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention awards. Don t miss this show. The hours are Saturday, February 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, February 8 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Collier County Public Schools Middle School and High School Honors Band Concert On Saturday, January 24, at 3:00 p.m., the middle school and high school band students performed in the annual Collier County Public Schools Honors Band Concert. The students in this concert represent the various schools in the district. The students are selected through an audition process, and it is a high honor to be selected to perform. This concert is an opportunity to see the best students from the schools perform. The middle school clinician/ conductor is Dr. Robert Hearson. Dr. Hearson is Professor Emeritus at Lebanon Valley College in PA. The high school clinician is Mr. Troy Jones, the Director of Athletic Bands at FGCU. The clinicians provide very challenging music to the students, and the students will do a spectacular job rising to the challenge. Collier County Public Schools Elementary, Middle School and High School Honors Chorus Concert On Friday, January 30 at 6:30pm at Gulf Coast High School, selected students from across the school district will present a wonderful evening of choir music as part of the Collier County Public Schools Honors Chorus Festival. Students audition for a panel of judges or are nominated by their teacher to perform with their peers from across the county s public schools in a high achieving concert choir. Professional clinicians in the area of chorus conducting will be rehearsing and conducting this fine group of young musicians. Please mark your calendars to attend this wonderful evening of music making by our talented CCPS singers. Shoppes at Vanderbilt and Collier County Public Schools K-12 Student Art Show Above artwork from a previous show at the Shoppes at Vanderbilt The sixth annual display of student artwork will open at the Shoppes at Vanderbilt on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. The artwork will be on display through Saturday, February 21st. The artwork displayed will represent students from kindergarten through 12 th grade from The School District of Collier County, as well as work done by students at some of the local private schools. Everything from ceramics, sculptures, drawings, paintings, and more will be on display. The art show is not juried, but rather teachers decide what artwork will be presented. Choices truly show off the talents of students throughout Collier County and show the growth in student art as they progress from kindergarten into high school. The opening reception for the show will be on Friday, February 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. The display will be in store front 506 at the Shoppes at Vanderbilt which is located by the intersection of Vanderbilt Beach Road and Airport Pulling Road.

News from the Schools Osceola Elementary: The art department at Osceola Elementary has been busy!! The 5th graders have been working hard since October on a campus mural representing the building of their school garden. Jessica Wozniak from Artis-Naples assisted Mrs. Green and her students in this collaborative project. The finished piece measures 6 feet tall by 9 feet wide. Great Job to ALL the 5th grade OES chiefs! Osceola students will take part in the Chalk Art Event on 5th Avenue for the 2nd year in a row. Fourth and fifth graders, along with family volunteers from Osceola will create a masterpiece downtown directly on the street of 5th Ave, on January 24th from 8 am-5 pm. Pictured is last year's finished piece from OES students and their art teacher, Mrs. Green. Osceola is taking part in the Friends of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park (DWPSP) in their Second Annual Children s Art Show for grades K-5. The show will be on February 7-8, 2015. Art teachers whose student(s) receive awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention, or Peoples Choice will receive a cash donation for their art class from the Friends of DWPSP. This is a great opportunity to showcase the artistic talent of our Collier students. Tommie Barfield Elementary: Over the holiday break, the Marco Island Center for the Arts held the first Marco s Got Talent which featured local students. Several of the TBE children participated in this during the break. Elizabeth Braren, music teacher at Tommie Barfield, stated she was so proud of them! The children were amazing and did a beautiful job! On January 16 th, the entire 3 rd grade along with our Drum Club under the direction of Mr. Robert Houghtaling, a community partner and professional musician, performed at the annual Marco Island Arbor Day celebration. TBE is honored to have been invited to again perform several songs for the annual Laws of Life Banquet on Thursday evening, February 19 th. There will be a group of 2 nd through 5 th grade students singing character education songs for this lovely event. Village Oaks Elementary The VOE Music Department is picking up the tempo as we head into 2015! Moving forward, our students will be working to prepare for various performances around SW Florida this Spring. From marching with the Immokalee Marching Indians in the Naples MLK Parade, singing with the Collier County Elementary Honor Choir, learning new notes on our instruments, to performing with the Naples Philharmonic at the Carnegie Hall Link Up event, the VOE Music Department is keeping a steady beat. Palmetto Ridge High: Jessica Rakich had a photograph chosen for the Annual Photography Exhibit at Rookery Bay. This is an Annual Event put on by Rookery Bay and the United Arts Council. It was juried by Clyde Butcher and was open to all Florida Residence Photographers. There were only 21 photographers selected for this show. The exhibit will run from January 29 th to March 26 th. Congratulations to Jessica and to her photography teacher, Patti Wisniewski. Marlon Herrera, grade 12 won the $1500 art scholarship from the Naples Woman s Club. Effie Schreckengost received an Honorable Mention Award. They will be recognized at an awards ceremony at the Naples Woman s Club on Sunday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m. Congratulations to Marlon and Effie and to their art teacher, Barbara Mundy.

Rookery Bay Student Art Show Each year students from the various elementary, middle and high schools, both public and private schools, create artwork based on life in the ocean. This show is juried and prizes are awarded for first, second and third place. The artwork is judged on the composition of the artwork and how well the student has used the elements of art and the principles of design as well as their creativity and their scientific accuracy to the theme of the show. The artwork will be on display at the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve s facility from April 1, 2015 until May 20, 2015 Superintendent s Art Gallery Show and Purchase Award The reception for the Superintendent s Art Gallery Show will be on March 30, 2015 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the School Board auditorium at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Administrative Center. Each elementary, middle and high school in CCPS is eligible to submit up to three artworks to this show. The artworks are juried based on the following criteria: Imaginative and creative thinking and expression Application of elementary and principles of design Technical skills and the mastery of materials Completeness of composition All artwork must be original work. Well-known cartoon figures such as Peanuts, Sponge Bob, Charlie Brown, etc. cannot be used because they are copyrighted. Artwork is due to the Fine Arts Coordinator by February 27. One artwork is selected to represent each school and is hung in the lobby area of the Administrative Center. In addition to the Superintendent s Art Gallery Show, the Superintendent s Purchase Award is held. Framed artwork is submitted by high school students for consideration for purchase by Dr. Patton. The purchased artwork becomes part of the permanent art gallery on the Fifth Floor of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Administrative Center. Baker Museum 7th Annual Student Exhibition Saturday, May 9-Sunday, July 26, 2015 The Naples Museum of Art is planning its Sixth Annual Student Exhibition of artwork created by students in Collier County. If you wish to submit works for inclusion in the exhibition we need detailed information about each piece by April 10. Information needed: artist s name, title, medium, dimensions, school name, grade level, art teacher s name. Please send via email to jwozniak@artisnaples.org. Six works per school can be submitted to the Student Exhibition. An additional six works can be submitted for inclusion in the scholarship exhibition for graduating high school students. Three $1,000 scholarships will be given to high school seniors continuing their education. Opening Reception Saturday, May 9: 10:00 a.m. to noon. The exhibition will be displayed in the galleries in the Philharmonic Center.

John Morris Russell, Conductor, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra On December 9 and 10, students at Barron Collier High School, Lely High School, Avalon Elementary School and Seacrest County Day School were treated to a class led by John Morris Russell. Mr. Russell has worked with many of North America s most distinguished ensembles including the orchestras of Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Toronto, Vancouver as well as Miami s New World Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and The Cleveland Orchestra. In 1999 he replaced an ailing Maestro Kunzel at the famed Musikverein in Vienna, in a concert featuring the Vienna Boys Choir, the Boys Choir of Harlem and the actor Gregory Peck. John Morris Russell began his tenure as Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in September, 2011. The students enjoyed his energetic instruction and learned new techniques. In addition, Mr. Russell was treated to a performance by the Pre-K Violin students led by Judy Evans. See some of the photos from that day. Thank you to Chellie Doepke for arranging this opportunity for our students. Golden Gate High School Empty Bowl Chalk Art The Golden Gate Pottery classes and the GGHS student Art club/pottery Guild have been working since August to create 230 bowls for donation to the Harry Chapin Empty Bowls Event. This event is Saturday Jan. 24 in Cambier Park. This year GGHS student volunteers will be assisting in ladling bowls of delicious soup from restaurants throughout Naples. Many students have committed to attending the event with their families this year. During the same day the annual Rotary Club Chalk Art Event will be on 5 th Avenue. Over a dozen GGHS students will participate to create gorgeous art within three spaces on the street. Students are excited to volunteer several hours painting and interacting with the Naples community to help fund the Rotary Club college scholarship program. Come join us for loads of fun at the Empty Bowl and Chalk Art Events!

January 16: - Tommie Barfield Elementary s Third Grade will perform music at the Mackle Island Arbor Day Celebration starting at 10:00 am. January 20: Manatee Elementary presents the Fifth Grade Choral Musical, Geology Rocks at 6:00 P.M. in the cafeteria/stage at Manatee Elementary School. January 24th: CCPS Honors Band Concert starting at 3 p.m. at Golden Gate High School Auditorium. January 30: Collier County Public Schools Honors Chorus Concert. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. at Gulf Coast High School. January 31: Souper Bowl Marco from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mackle Park. All Tommie Barfield 1 st 5 th grade students participated in the Souper Bowl by painting a bowl. Early in the fall the bowls and glazes were provided by the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce and the students created their own unique designs for the bowls. This is the third year TBE has participated in this wonderful event. This is a fundraising event for Leadership March Scholarship Fund providing educational scholarships for local students February 2-3: CCPS HS & MS Jazz Bands performing for the Florida Bandmasters Assoc. District Jazz MPA (FGCU Bower School of Music see school band directors for more info). February 10: Poinciana Elementary s 4th grade students are performing the musical Make a Difference. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. February 13: Collier County Art Teacher workshop at the Baker Museum from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. February 17: Manatee Elementary presents the First Grade Choral Musical American Symbols at 6:00 P.M. in the cafeteria/stage. February 17: Pine Ridge Middle School s Pre-MPA Concert for Intermediate and Concert Orchestra. Upcoming Community Events for Students and Parents Naples Music Club: An Invitation from the Naples Music Club The Naples Music Club is celebrating its 50 th anniversary this year. They wished to do something that would be accessible to all people to show our appreciation to the community that has supported the Naples Music Club so generously over the years. As a result, they are sponsoring a Musical Safari on February 21 st at the North Naples United Methodist Church. This Musical Safari provides an opportunity for people of all ages to learn and explore musically while having a good time. It also showcases the incredible talent in Naples as well as provides demos of exciting programs. Performers will range from 4 years of age to 80. Students and their families can explore an instrument petting zoo, see steel drum performances, receive group string instruction and listen to and experience world drumming. Music departments in the Collier County Public Schools have been very supportive. Many students will be on the program and will be serving as volunteers in events such as the petting zoo for instruments. We will have soloists, chamber groups, ensembles, talks from professional musicians and more. The activities during the day (10 am to 4 pm) will be free. In the evening there will be a concert featuring the Cuban Jazz Great Nachito Herrera. Prices for families will be modest $10/adult & $5/child. We hope that families will take advantage of these wonderful opportunities. Nachito has been described as one of the three greatest jazz pianists living today by jazz critic Neil Tesser.
