DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Detentin Officer I -- This is the entry/jurney level in the class series. Psitins at this level perfrm mst f the duties required f the psitins at the II level, but are nt expected t functin at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretin and judgement in matters related t wrk prcedures and methds. Wrk is usually supervised while in prgress and fits an established structure r pattern. Exceptins r changes in prcedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this
class is ften used as a training class, emplyees may have nly limited r n directly related wrk experience. Detentin Officer II -- This is the full jurney level in the class series. Psitins at this level are distinguished frm the I level by the perfrmance f the full range f duties as assigned, wrking independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Psitins at this level receive nly ccasinal instructin r assistance as new r unusual situatins arise, and are fully aware f the perating prcedures and plicies f the wrk unit. Psitins at the II level are nrmally filled by advancement frm the I level. When filled frm the utside, the emplyee is required t have prir related experience which allws the emplyee t meet the qualificatin standards fr the II level. Detentin Officer III -- This is the full advanced-jurney level in the class series. Psitins at this level are distinguished frm the II level by the perfrmance f the cmplex range f duties as assigned, lead supervisin, cnducting training prgrams, wrking independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Psitins at this level receive nly assistance as new r unusual situatins arise, and are fully aware f the perating prcedures and plicies f the wrk unit. Psitins at the III level are nrmally filled by advancement frm the II level. When filled frm the utside, the emplyee is required t have prir related experience which allws the emplyee t meet the qualificatin standards fr the III level. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Imprtant and essential duties may include, but are nt limited t, the fllwing: 1. Supervise, cntrl and mnitr inmate behavir/mvement in the jail; detain, r restrain by frce if necessary, using restraints; subdue resisting r assaultive inmates using maneuvers as trained. 2. Perfrm security patrls and rutine cell checks; patrl cell areas, crridrs and ther areas as assigned and climb stairs in twers and cellblcks. 3. Bk/search/release inmates by cmpleting varius admissins frms, manually and thrugh data entry int the Department's cmputer prgram; fingerprint and phtgraph inmates. 4. Cnduct visual and audi surveillance f inmates and the facility fr extended perids f time; mnitr camera screens and exercise full field f visin while supervising inmates; utilize the jail cmputer prgram as it relates t security duty perfrmance. 5. Transprt r escrt restrained inmates (passive, aggressive, hstile, etc.) t curt, medical appintments and ther activities. 6. Cmmunicate effectively and cherently with the public, staff, inmates and in curt r ther frmal settings with apprved facility cmmunicatin devices including telephne, intercm system, and prtable radi. 7. Be aware f the lcatin and prvide dcumentatin f inmates in the assigned area; remve and cntrl inmates frm cells in emergency situatins. 8. Deliver medicatin as directed by medical persnnel in accrdance with training. 9. Perfrm basic first aid including CPR.
10. Enfrce prcedures fr secure areas; read and suggest updates fr detentin and departmental plicy and prcedures. 11. Operate security cntrl panels and drs; perate levers, buttns and lcks, may manually perate heavy drs and cunt, cllect, and inventry small items. 12. Maintain general security f the jail; stp penetratins r escapes; pursue fleeing inmates; perfrm rescue and ther security related duties. 13. Perfrm searches f peple, mail items, bjects capable f cncealing cntraband, buildings, indr and utdr areas. 14. Classify inmates; exercise apprpriate judgment in the handling f special needs, situatins f inmates. 15. Maintain fire safety; extinguish small fires; inspect areas fr fire preventin purpses; participate in fire preventin activities; wrk while using a selfcntained breathing apparatus (SCBA). 16. Perfrm crisis interventin functins in a hstile envirnment; recgnize abnrmal behavir; take apprpriate actins. 17. Prepare and file incident reprts regarding inmate cnduct, disturbances, rule vilatins and ther ccurrences. 18. Read, cmprehend and prcess legal and nnlegal dcuments including medical instructins, cmmitment r release rders, summns, criminal statutes and ther dcuments. 19. Lad, unlad, aim, and fire (frm a variety f bdy psitins) handguns, shtguns, and ther apprved agency firearms under cnditins f stress that justify the use f deadly frce and at levels f prficiency prescribed in qualificatin standards. 20. Attend hearings and ther curt functins; prvide infrmatin and dcumentatin t the curt and cunty attrney; testify in curt. 21. Operate department cmputer prgram; dictate and/r type reprts. 22. Use CPR and first aid prcedures. Understand and use jail cmputer prgram as it relates t security duty perfrmance. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: Any cmbinatin equivalent t experience and training that wuld prvide the required knwledge, skills, and abilities wuld be qualifying. A typical way t btain the knwledge, skills, and abilities wuld be: Experience: Detentin Officer I N prir experience is required. Educatin/Training: Equivalent t a high schl educatin. Detentin Officer II Experience: Tw years experience in a psitin cmparable t a Detentin Officer I. Educatin/Training: Equivalent t a high schl educatin including sme specialized training in jail peratins and/r cllege curses. Detentin Officer III Experience: Fur years f experience in a psitin cmparable t a Detentin Officer II. Educatin/Training: Equivalent t tw years f cllege and/r specialized training in jail peratins r law enfrcement. LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATIONS: Must be current r btained within a specified time frame as defined upn emplyment. Detentin Officer I, II & III A valid driver's license.
