c o l u m n Selected under the Core-to-Core Program (B. Asia-Africa Science Platforms) Toward Overcoming Chemical Hazards in African Countries Stepping forward, into science s world Program Title: Establishment of International Toxicology Consortium with 8 African Countries JSPS is Japan s core research funding agency supporting the advancement of scientific research. Graduate School of Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido University Resource development and urbanization in African countries is causing chemical pollution of the Continent s environment. Contributing to this problem are the illegal use of obsolete and expired agricultural chemicals, coupled with the dumping of electronic and other chemically toxic wastes. Despite this grave situation, sufficient information has not been gathered to effectively devise ways of addressing the problems. Accordingly, it is the aim of this project to establish an international network for spurring dialogue among cognizant researchers and administrators of African countries on problems related to environmental contamination while promoting joint research towards solving them. Symposia and research exchanges are also held to advance the dialogue. Not limited to lab experiments, the project works to advance toxicological research on the ground. Through these initiatives mediated by Japan, a vibrant research exchange is developing among African countries. Surveying arsenic contamination of well water in Ghana Prof. Mayumi Ishizuka Toward Overcoming Chemical Hazards in African Countries Through this project carried out in African countries, zones and substances of chemical contamination are being identified for the first time, and joint research is being carried out in the field on the toxic effects of this contamination. Concurrently, a discussion is being advanced on the kind of counterstrategies feasible, on the development of technologies for neutralizing chemical substances, and on the development of functional animal feeds. Building a consortium for solving environmental problems in African countries, the project is working to analyze the state and proliferation of environmental contamination and its impact on people and animals, while advancing the development of technologies for mitigating contamination. It is creating a platform for bottom-up toxicological research and continual exchange of information on the latest scientific advances. Surveying agrochemical poisoning of animals in Kenya From FY 2009-2012, the project was carried out with Zambia through the AA Science Platform Program under the title African network of research on wildlife medicine and chemical hazard. c o l u m n Selected under the Core-to-Core Program (B.
