Clinical skills such as bathing, bedmaking, vital signs, feeding patients, assisting with activities of daily living (ADL s), etc. are learned in the classroom and practiced in a simulated lab setting. Curriculum content from both years is re-enforced in the computer lab using e- learning modules and interactive exercises while integrating technology. The robust software provided by HealthCenter 21, consists of two programs: Healthcare Foundations and Multi-Skilled Assistant. Course 4 is the Pharmacy Technician course in which students learn the knowledge they need in order to prepare for the ExCPT (Examination for Certified Pharmacy Technicians). Allied Health II students complete an Anatomy & Physiology course; learning about the various body systems, disorders and preventive health maintenance for each, and how it interrelates with patient care, illness, and disease processes. At the end of the second year of the Academy of Health professions, students are completing the clinical hours portion of the program in various units at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The hospital provides a real life setting for the students to practice the skills they have been preparing for in the skills lab. Upon successful completion of the requirements, students may be eligible to take the Certified Nursing Assistant exam and become licensed as a CNA through the Maryland Board of Nursing. Students will then have the opportunity to work in Internships, continue with their college pre-requisites, or attend their home school full time.

The faculty at Sollers Point Technical High School are excited to begin instruction in our academic and technical program areas. Our vision and mission focuses on providing authentic and rigorous instruction in order to develop students who are career and college ready while also ensuring that every student completes a career and technical program and earns an industry certification or license. In our effort to ensure grading and reporting practices are equitable, accurate, specific and timely, BCPS has updated Policy and Rule 5210 to ensure that grading practices are supportive of student learning. Beginning September 5 th, all instructors at Sollers Point Technical High will use a 100 point grading scale with the option of assigning a zero (0) for assignments that are not submitted for feedback or a grade. One important facet of this grading scale is that all assignments will fall into one of three categories, Major, Minor and Practice. Practice assignments will be entered to show a student s growth towards mastery of a particular standard. Major assignments may include projects, extended labs, culminating performances, research reports, unit tests, culminating events, PBAs (Performance-Based assessments), and extended essays and will be weighted at 35-40% of the total grade for the class. Minor assignments may include daily classwork, homework assigned after instruction, practice and feedback, discussions, learning checks (quiz), and brief constructed responses and will be weighted at 60-65% of the class grade. (continued on subsequent page)

Safety and security is a critical foundation of our success. More than 165 video cameras have been installed in the hallways and common areas. Our outside doors are on automatic locks and faculty and staff will be monitoring the bathrooms and hallways between classes. Sollers Point in conjunction with the entire district will monitor period attendance and lateness through the BCPS One Student Information System. BCPS One parent login information is located at this address: https://mybcps.bcps.org/ ManageProfile.aspx. Students may use the steps on the Delvale Ave. side of the school to enter the building from 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. After 7:45 a.m., students will need to use the primary school entrance on the parking lot or CCBC side of the complex for security reasons. Parents may also drop off students using the parking lot access loop on the CCBC side complex as well. Student parking passes for the entire year are $10.00. Students who ride a bus each morning will be dropped off from the bus loop. Parents and students may not use or park in the bus loop between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you this year. Michael L. Weglein, Principal mweglein@bcps.org Counseling Corner Whether returning from last year or just recently accepting a seat and joining us, a new school year brings change and excitement. Regardless of your situation, we welcome you! Here in the school counseling office we work hard to establish a comfortable and safe environment for all students to have their many individual and unique needs met. Sometimes we are changing schedules, other times navigating a challenging situation with a peer, constructing a path for your post-secondary plans, or sometimes working through some emotional obstacles with patience and empathy. Our job here is to design and implement a comprehensive program made up of activities to enhance the learning process for all students in the academic, personal/ social, and career domains. We will engage in individual counseling, classroom guidance activities, and even school-wide initiatives to get to know and better serve our students. No matter your goals, we want to help you get there. Keep your eyes out for various announcements and activities to help support our efforts. And, whether you need resources or just an ear please don t hesitate to get in touch with us. We re looking forward to a great year and can t wait to partner with all of you! Taryn Grey, LCPC, M. Ed.
