Learning by Simulation in Medical Education Training in Medical Simulation at CardioSIM Center (Sardinia) Professor Antonello Ganau Cardiology, University of Sassari
Training to achieve skills and competence in medical emergencies in a safe contest Ø Medical students need to be trained to achieve practical skills in invasive procedures and in managing medical emergencies Ø Physicians and nurses need to acquire and maintain high levels of professional competence and to identify and prevent causes of errors, even in the contest of unusual emergencies. Ø For ethical reasons, patients can not be object of the training, because they would be exposed to unacceptable risks of medical errors Ø To be effective and safe at the same time, training must occur in very realistic simulated scenarios
Causes of accidents in Medicine Ø In USA about 18 % of hospitalized patients are harmed by care Ø About 2% of errors result in death Ø 70 % of accidents are due to Human Factors Ø 60 % of the cases are potentially preventable
We need to improve patient safety and quality of care by reducing the clinical risk Ø Health care delivery remains unsafe despite major efforts in USA to improve patient safety over the past decade Ø Improving patient safety and quality of care is a complicated and challenging task Ø Fundamental improvements need fundamental changes.
Medical simulation improves patient safety and reduces the clinical risk Ø Currently, medical simulation primarily serves as a training tool to provide safe and realistic scenarios for helping doctors, nurses and teams to acquire valuable experience with emergencies and to learn the rules of Crisis Resources Managemet (CRM), without putting patients at risk.
Simulation centers for patient safety in the world Ø USA Ø Europe 434 centers 100 centers Ø Asia 67 centers Ø Canada Ø Australia 29 centers 15 centers Ø South America 10 centers
CardioSim MISSION The mission is to improve medical education and to allow health care professionals to acquire and maintain medical knowledge, competence and skill needed to save human lives (Competence Management System), with special focus on CV medicine.
CardioSim Who we are First center of high fidelity simulation in Sardinia, one of the four in Italy CardioSim was realized 6 years ago by the Chair and Specialty School of Cardiology, University of Sassari. It is devoted to train students and fellows of the Medical School and to provide courses of continuous medical education (CME) for general practitioners and specialists of the National and Regional Health System.
CardioSim Where we are CardioSim is located at Porto Conte Ricerche (branch of Scientific and Technology Park, Region of Sardinia), nearby the sea and inside a protected naturalistic area. 15 Km to Alghero airport

It is not the strongest species that survives, not the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to changes (Charles Darwin) Medical schools and hospitals must be very responsive to the changes needed to improve patient safety and quality of care
