WELCOME! Your student is embarking on an amazing academic journey, and Cornell views parents and family members as essential partners in supporting your student s success here. Students are required to attend New Student Orientation, from Friday, August 18, through Monday, August 21; classes begin Tuesday, August 22. PARENTS ONLY: Events listed in this schedule are open to families and their new Cornell students, except those marked, which are for parents and family members only. LOCATING EVENTS: Campus maps are readily available on campus. Each event listing in this guide is followed by a grid reference to the large printed campus map. ACCESSIBLE PARKING: Those with accessible parking license plates/placards from their home municipality can utilize any accessible parking spaces on campus from Friday, August 18, through Sunday, August 20. Note that accessible placards can be used only in spaces marked for accessibility; they cannot be used in spaces marked as reserved. FRIDAY, AUGUST 18 UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED ORIENTATION EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY: GETTING AROUND Free shuttle buses will take you between North and West Campuses and New Student Check-In (Friday only). We encourage you to park your car as directed by Transportation Services and use these shuttles. MOVE-IN: DESIGNATED TIME First-year and transfer students should plan to move into their residences on Friday, August 18, 2017. Due to the large number of students checking in to North Campus, Collegetown (Cascadilla and Sheldon Court), and West Campus (including 122 McGraw Place and 625 University Avenue) on that day, students assigned to those communities are given a move-in time based on the first letter of their last name. LAST NAME BEGINS WITH: ARRIVE BETWEEN THE HOURS OF: A G H O P Z 2:00pm 5:00pm 8:00am 11:00am 11:00am 2:00pm Remember to print a copy of your move-in day unloading permit from the to-do list on newstudents.cornell.edu prior to your arrival. To facilitate a smooth move-in experience for everyone, students who arrive early will NOT be able to move in before their assigned move-in time. If your student cannot check in during their move-in time, they should contact the Housing Office prior to Orientation at housing@cornell.edu. Transfer students assigned to 112 Edgemoor and Schuyler House may move in any time between 8:00am and 5:00pm on Friday, August 18. 8:00am 4:00pm: New Student Check-In Barton Hall At New Student Check-In, students will pick up their Cornell ID card. Your child may be the one beginning a new adventure, but we know that the college transition can impact the whole family. Join Dean of Students Vijay Pendakur to talk about how to approach the coming weeks of your student s first year at Cornell, as you begin to experience your child s development at a distance. Students may find that new friendships, challenging academics, and changing family dynamics make this a time of success and struggle, happiness and frustration, sometimes all on the same day. Learn how to embrace your student s increasing independence, the role you can play in fostering a great college experience for them, and what you can do for yourself to make this a smooth transition. 3
