Cambridgeshire County Council- Care Certificate What is the Care Certificate? 2010 refreshed edition) The Care Certificate is a key component of the overall induction which an employer must provide, legally and in order to meet the essential standards set out by the Care Quality Commission. The Care Certificate provides clear evidence to employers, patients and people who receive care and support that you, the social care worker in front of them, have been assessed against a specific set of standards, and has demonstrated they have the skills, knowledge and behaviours to ensure that they provide compassionate and high quality care and support. The Care Certificate: applies across health and social care links to competences and units in qualifications enables workers to develop the fundamental skills they need to provide quality care gives a basis from which workers can develop their knowledge and skills as their career progresses Who is the Care Certificate for? Staff working in roles that would undertake the Care Certificate will have many different job titles. Examples of roles / titles are: Activities worker Day Care Assistant Day Care Officer Domiciliary Care Worker Home Care Worker Personal Assistant Reablement Assistant Residential Care Worker Senior Support Worker Support Worker It may also be for you if you have direct contact with patients or service users. For example if you are: A caring volunteer A porter A cook A driver To be awarded the Care Certificate you must meet all of the outcomes and assessment requirements. Your assessor will let you know if you are undertaking the full Care 3 P a g e Cambridgeshire County Council 2015

Certificate as part of your induction or if your role means you are only able to complete part of it. Overview There are fifteen Care Certificate Standards. These are: Standard 1 Understand your role Standard 2 Your Personal development Standard 3 Duty of Care Standard 4 Equality and Diversity Standard 5 Work in a Person Centred Way Standard 6 Communication Standard 7 Privacy and Dignity Standard 8 Fluids and Nutrition Standard 9 Awareness of Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disability Standard 10 Safeguarding Adults Standard 11 Safeguarding Children Standard 12 Basic Life Support Standard 13 Health and Safety Standard 14 Handling Information Standard 15 Infection Prevention and Control Each standard contains a number of things you must know about or demonstrate that you can do in the right way before you can work safely without close supervision. How will I be assessed? There will be at least one trained assessor in your workplace whose responsibility it will be to ensure you are meeting each standard correctly. You will not be able to work without 'line of sight supervision' until the relevant standard is signed off. You will be assessed on both your knowledge and your performance. You will be given all the information and instruction you need and will have opportunities to practice your skills before you are assessed. Performance assessment must happen during real work activity. It is not possible to simulate activities (other than in exceptional circumstances), and no evidence of prior learning is allowed. Your assessor may also want to seek the views of service users, family members, other workers etc. when considering if you have met the required standard. All your knowledge and performance evidence, and the training you have received will be recorded in this workbook which should be kept in the workplace, but will be yours to keep if you change jobs. How long does it take to complete the Care Certificate? For full time staff the average time needed for a worker who is new to Health and Social Care to demonstrate the expected competencies and knowledge is about 12 weeks. Part time workers may take longer than this. 4 P a g e Cambridgeshire County Council 2015

How can I gain the information I need to meet the standards? There are a number of ways of learning new things: You can be told information e.g. on a training course You can watch someone else do a task You can talk about ideas with other people You can read information or guidance You can watch a DVD You can do some research, including from recommended websites You can ask your manager A combination of all of the above is probably best, but different people prefer some ways of learning to others. The Care Certificate does not specify how people should learn, you should discuss and reach agreement with your manager about the ways that will help you learn best, however if you are an employee of Cambridgeshire County Council, there are a number of training courses that you must attend. These are listed on page 7.. What happens if I change jobs? If you change jobs after you have successfully completed the Care Certificate, you do not need to complete the Care Certificate again, but your new manager will want to see your Certificate of Successful Completion from your previous job and your workbook portfolio, and will want to ensure that you have retained the competencies required by the Care Certificate. You will also be required to undertake a workplace-specific induction each time you change jobs. What happens after Induction? When you have successfully completed your induction, you will be on the way to meeting many of the requirements for the core and mandatory units of the Diplomas in Health and Social Care at each level. Your diploma assessor will help you to identify which these might be when you register for this next stage of your development. Further information If you need any further information, or have any concerns about how the Care Certificate is being carried out in your workplace, please do not hesitate to contact the Care Certificate Lead in Cambridgeshire County Council's Workforce Development Team by emailing workforce.development@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or calling 01480 373534 5 P a g e Cambridgeshire County Council 2015
